Crawling back to normality slightly slower than a tortoise taking the scenic route...

Like when male giraffes fight. The crack as their necks bang against each other can be heard a mile away!

AcornAutumn · 12/03/2021 11:05

@Curlygirl06

"Twinkle " likes the name The Tortoise Chorus" , approved by her. Did you know that when giant tortoises mate it's incredibly noisy? Roaring and screaming and banging of shells. I think I've got a video somewhere.
Glad she likes it!
MrsEWeatherwax · 12/03/2021 11:09

Just checking in. Re masks, I had to ring pharmacy the other day and I couldn’t understand a word the pharmacist was saying as he had a mask on! There is only so many times you can say pardon, I didn’t hear that. Plus I am sick of having to shout my name and address in pharmacy to collect prescription. Very private, not!
Once this is over I’m going for a hearing test! Because I’m going deaf and must normally lip read more than I realise.

I don't think you are going deaf. Everyone I know says they can't hear people through masks.
ISaySteadyOn · 12/03/2021 11:47

They muffle voices. Of course they do.

bakingcupcakes · 12/03/2021 12:12

I have real problems telling the first letter of customers surnames when they come to collect stuff. Quite often I'll be looking for Baker only to go back and find out they actually said Draper or something else similar. It's hard to pick out the sounds. I didn't have any problems with this pre-mask.

TrustTheGeneGenie · 12/03/2021 12:18

checking in.
worse round here for litter etc too.

Also complained to council about parks, they confirmed theyd removed play equipment and werent planning to put it back in because "social distancing" pricks. I am just about to write a very passive agressive email back about our childrens wellbeing and why dont the council care about it.

She also told me one of the parks had been refurbed in 2010 - like that was recent - mate that was 11 years ago!!!!

justasking111 · 12/03/2021 12:34

OH keeps bumping into people under 60 who have been jabbed, kept pestering me to contact surgery sulking over it and giving me the evil eye. I have emailed the surgery now but know that different surgeries have different allocation of vaccines, I don't know why his mate in his fifties has had it but bollox my surgery won't help I suspect

Wow even Russky Wales hasn't removed equipment here
TrustTheGeneGenie · 12/03/2021 12:45

I just emailed her back and gave her what for. They said it was in line with Government guidelines, and i just told her that it catergorically isn't - they were NEVER told to start dissasmbling parks FFS.

She said it was done before they re opened on the 10th July - well yeah, duh. But then i said well that means you've had over 7 months to put it back - why haven't you? They have not closed since.

Also she said that they were waiting for further guidance from the gov before putting them back - i kindly pointed out that they were highly unlikely to get guidance on re opening something which re opened OVER 7 MONTHS AGO!!!!

fucking morons. MORONS.

Our council has always hated children.

and i complained theyve risen council tax by an extoritionate amount again and the service is still SHIT.

I am angry. Can you tell?

ISaySteadyOn · 12/03/2021 12:48

You are absolutely right to be!

LadyCounterblast · 12/03/2021 12:54

I don't blame you Trust I'd be angry too. What a load of Kafka-esque nonsense: 'we're waiting for permission to reinstall something we never had to remove in the first place'.

MrsEWeatherwax · 12/03/2021 13:01

Our council tax is now shocking. I can remember being at a Parish council meeting years ago, discussing the play equipment and being told they had replaced something recently, and I argued no they haven’t it was over 20 years ago.
But then our council think a headquarters should only last 50 years!

AcornAutumn · 12/03/2021 13:03

When I posted last night, I wasn't just meaning the litter

I was thinking of the vibe? Everywhere will be more rough as so many are out of work and desperate.

chocolatesweets · 12/03/2021 13:23

our town centre is like that, always been a bit shit but definitely worse now
Iheartmysmart · 12/03/2021 13:44

Our town centre now has over 50 boarded up units and there are more closing in the next few months. It was always grim but will turn into a ghost town very soon.

I expect then those who were clamouring for a “proper” lockdown will get the arse because there’s nowhere to go shopping, to the cinema, have something to eat or grab a coffee.

People round here took the closed signs off the playgrounds pretty early on. The one at the local park has only just reopened but that’s because they were replacing the equipment after a health and safety incident rather than bloody mindedness.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 12/03/2021 13:49

Why are so many people over there still convinced that masks are here to stay, just because they arent mentioning it in the road map. My understanding is that masks, like foreign travel arent in the roadmap because they have a separate review and that review will determine the SD measures going forward. That the overwhelming likelihood given by Jonathan Van Tam and Chris Whitty is that by the end of the roadmap period (June 21st), masks and social distancing will essentially be personal choice, but may need to be bought in again over the Autumn/Winter depending on how things look then.

So, am I being thick or is there a LOT of wilful misunderstanding over there regarding this issue?

AcornAutumn · 12/03/2021 14:07

Iheart

Yes, it's really sad. I live in a big block of flats and tbh I was scared what it might be like at the start. Actually I think it was okay because of furlough maybe but now people are starting to lose jobs - a couple of neighbours have told me the landlord is evicting them but I thought that wasn't allowed yet. The anger is palpable, understandably.

I joined MN to talk about maybe moving. Much as it's a little intimidating round here, I think I would have just moved somewhere I don't have roots and it might have looked "better" cosmetically but that won't last.

I'm sorry, I've been trying to ignore lockdown and I haven't a clue where the media are with it, but the mood among locals is very low so I'm picking up on that.

I'm even worried about doing my care visit to mum on Sunday in case they decide to fill the Tube with police. Her GP and my GP have me listed as her carer but just the thought of an encounter with the police, ugh.

Seriouslymole · 12/03/2021 14:30

Hello all, it's been a while since I have logged on. Our tortoise (Flash) is now out of hibernation too - still only a tiddler as only 2 years old. He is ravenous.

Anyway, logging in for my dose of sanity. I'm beginning to question myself on everything at the moment. Kids are back to school and the whole testing and mask situation at secondaries completely messes with my head. Anyway, thank you all for being here still, even though I don't engage regularly.

SirSamuelVimes · 12/03/2021 15:04

Ooh, @Seriouslymole, what type of tortoise do you have? Can we see?

BogRollBOGOF · 12/03/2021 16:28

Our local playground is currently out of bounds as it's currently being used as a public toilet by some mobile incomers who've taken advantage of a largely empty car park for a community building. Frustratingly, while the building is closed, it remains the official car park for the nearby school and is now causing traffic bedlam for families trying to manage multiple school runs with nowhere left to park.

In positive news, collection of reports for DS1's EHCP is going full steam. Just spoken his consultant on a phone appointment (those kinds of follow up work relatively well although I can struggle with clarity on the line) and DS had a video appointment with Ed Psych yesterday. Things are looking positive at this point and with the multi-agency meeting next week, there is time on our side for appeals if necessary. I really would like an EHCP in place for secondary applications for y6 coming up soon. Ñot having had open evenings this September was a pretty major glitch though.

The general vibe near me is relief that schools are back, and counting down until we get our next crumbs of freedom!

I'm generally in better emotional territory now I have some personal space back and am not constantly treading on egg shells trying not to neglect education too much without triggering meltdowns!

I'm definitely seeing more combinations of people out and about.

I've had two running buddies this week. School run mum has gone a long way to keeping me sane since Jan, and back to school has freed up the one I met last autumn and we ran together today.

Bog, what a mare. I'm concerned about that kind of thing here, hasn't happened yet but one of my walks I saw some people who appearing to be scoping out for that.

Seriouslymole · 12/03/2021 16:39

@SirSamuelVimes

Um, not sure I'm that technically able. I'll try. He's a spur thighed tortoise. (I say he, we're not entirely sure yet). If the picture works, this is him waiting for a bath and in a lapse moment of allowing him apple - he is normally only weed-fed!
