Crawling back to normality slightly slower than a tortoise taking the scenic route...

Re trust in organisations, most public sector organisations have swelled on size and exist to demand more taxpayer funds and find dubious ways to justify their existence.

Tony Blair increased their pay and their reach and David Cameron decided to do nothing about it. Part of the problem is there are loud public demands for more funding for bloody everything.

The public have underlined their desire for a nanny state with this.

And the definition of pandemic is a bloody joke, which has been the case for a while. We can easily do without organisations like the WHO but look at the outcry when Trump didn't want to pay them anymore.

ISaySteadyOn · 13/03/2021 12:46

Isn't the WHO pretty much in China's pocket anyway?

AcornAutumn · 13/03/2021 12:48

Even if they weren't, look at their remit

What is the point of them?

amicissimma · 13/03/2021 15:46

AcornAutumn, "The public have underlined their desire for a nanny state with this."

I was just putting the newspaper in the recycling when my eye was caught by a headline in the Money section: "Why didn't the regulator keep us safe?" So now we not only have to be kept safe from naturally-occurring (we assume!) biological events, we also have to be kept safe from our investment misjudgements, should we be wealthy enough to be making any. Never mind having to drink horrible artificial sweeteners if we fancy some lemon San Pelligrino.

I expect the Ministry for Wiping Citizens Bums to be created any day now.

110APiccadilly · 13/03/2021 15:56

What is the point of lots of international organisations? The UN, for instance. You want someone to criticise Israel, they'll happily do it. You want someone to actually do something for (e.g.) the people in prison camps in North Korea, or the Uighurs, where are they? (I'm not suggesting Israel shouldn't be criticised, but to be honest, what's even the point of that? It's not like Israel cares if the UN say they've done something they shouldn't.)

110APiccadilly · 13/03/2021 15:58

That's probably a bit broad - I know the UN do some good stuff. But I was thinking of the Security Council sort of part of it.

NannyGythaOgg · 13/03/2021 16:23

I think organisations like WHO and the UN had much more of a role when meetings had to be held in person and an 'independent' body ideally could coordinate it in a neutral way without favour or prejudice. I think face to face meetings are still important at times as we all now know the limitations of online meetings BUT on the other hand smaller more frequent meetings online are easy and don't have the same time, cost, place implications which hugely reduces the need for BIG IMPORTANT FACE to FACE meetings.
But the 'independent' bodies have become bloated, bureaucratic and motivated by their own importance and power - and don't want to give either up (I am sure their are plenty of individuals who are employed by them who are still motivated by ideals). In the same manner as the government (and the NHS and teachers unions etc).

Getting rid of any of them will be far more difficult than setting them up was.

ISaySteadyOn · 13/03/2021 18:33

I think a lot of these were set up with the best of intentions and the hope that it would keep the world at peace.

But institutions contain people and, unfortunately, those who want power will take it in any way necessary. Which leads to a tight grip on whatever position they have, I guess.

AcornAutumn · 13/03/2021 19:36

110APiccadilly "What is the point of lots of international organisations?"

No idea for many of them.

AcornAutumn · 13/03/2021 19:55

Forgive me Sarah - I am relieved that Kate is not wearing a mask to visit.

Masks outdoors still give me the rage.

I avoid news but I do try to keep up with investment news.

I see stories that confuse me with the angle taken.

I didn't know San Pellegrino had fallen as well!

MrsEWeatherwax · 13/03/2021 22:35

I think it’s frightening how much of industry etc is owned by so few. Coke, Nestle, Johnson Johnson. Even eco brands like Method and Oatly get bought out by big business.
On another note went to collect takeaway earlier and just discovered the council have turned even more street lights off! Round a bloody blind bend too. So much for wanting people to walk etc, you would need a death wish.

MrsEWeatherwax · 13/03/2021 22:41

Ashamed that I forgot the great Sir Terry’s death anniversary. Feels like yesterday ( still haven’t read last book) have listened to the audio book, tried reading but I just cried so gave up.

I've seen more dog poo too. It sad - like people don't care about each other or the community they live in.

I have a feeling we'll be in and out of lockdown for years (every winter) or some kind of restriction will be placed on us.

Saw my mum yesterday and I'll be seeing my mother in law today. Life's too short. Thanks

I won't read the final book either. I don't want it to be over.
bakingcupcakes · 14/03/2021 08:27

Hope everyone's having a nice Mother's day. Just a regular day here (we've postponed to next weekend) because no one can take DS anywhere to get me anything. Grin

@chocolatesweets Given the option I would do the same. It's all getting a bit much now.

SirSamuelVimes · 14/03/2021 08:59

I've finished my mother's Day croissants and am now eating the leftover raspberry jam with a spoon 😋. I can feel the sugar rush beginning! I had a bit of a huff at DH last night because he hadn't sorted out anything so he did a late night Tesco run for goodies. Reading magazines in bed now, dog on my feet.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/03/2021 09:10

@MrsEWeatherwax

Re Mother’s Day on the news they were saying don’t visit. Go to a park and have a coffee/ walk picnic. It’s 6 degrees here today, my DM doesn’t want to have a picnic in the cold! What’s the difference of seeing your mother in a park to other side of driveway etc.
Happy mother's day... here's some hypothermia... never mind about aggravating your arthritis... It's why I haven't seen DM since September. She's beyond the range of a "poppable" distance. Fortunately she is bubbled with DB and during the recent home school phase was going to his a few times a week to help out with DN which was beneficial all round. She is beginning to sneak out and see other vaccinated friends which is good for confidence.

Nicely played to Kate Middleton last night going out quietly. Great antidote to the batshittery in the world at the moment on several accounts.
How to misread the room Met Police. Slow hand clap for the police at 8pm?

I haven't read distopias in a year. They ceased to be escapism. Even Harry Potter was feeling too much like contemporary social commentary by book 5.

May mothers day not be too shit, and enjoy your "fucking walk". Yey. The excitement.

I'd like to raise a glass to my DM today. The woman who gave me my "AD spirit". A woman who wouldn't tolerate this bullshit. The woman who, in the 10 day wait between her terminal cancer diagnosis and the appointment with the chemo doctor, went on holiday. Because "No one ever lay on their deathbed wishing they'd gone on less holidays".

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 14/03/2021 09:56

She sounds awesome Livin Wine to your mum. We lost MIL with cancer in May last year and obviously couldn't spend time with her because of lockdown. She definitely made the most of the time she had after her diagnosis.

My DM has been an AD right from the start Grin

SirSamuelVimes · 14/03/2021 09:59

I tried reading The Ickabog to DD in January. We both got depressed and gave up. Way too close to home right now! JKR can't half write about the gradual creep of totalitarianism.

@LivinLaVidaLoki your mum sounds bloody amazing. Here's a glass to her, and all AD mums both living and departed. Wine

TheOrchidKiller · 14/03/2021 10:05

@LivinLaVidaLoki
She sounds like an awesome woman.

@AcornAutumn I hope your visit to your mum goes smoothly today.

@bakingcupcakes yes, just a regular day here too. I might mix it up a bit & go for a walk this morning, instead of this afternoon. Ooooohh!

110APiccadilly · 14/03/2021 10:12

I think DH may have forgotten Mothers' Day, but tbf I forgot Valentine's Day Blush (and he didn't, I got a card and chocolate). So if he's not done anything for Mothers' Day, I now feel we are quits!!

Although it would be fair and proportionate to tell him he's changing all the nappies today, right?

bakingcupcakes · 14/03/2021 10:13

I'm thinking of buying some lager in the supermarket. This is what my life has come too. Grin I'm not 'allowed' lager at home because I struggle to leave it alone. I just want to drink it all and it makes me gain weight. However, as we're under house-arrest until next weekend it doesn't really matter. I'm not taking DS shopping by the way. He's staying with someone else while I go. I'm very excited at the prospect of leaving the house.

@SirSamuelVimes Me and DS loved The Ickabog! We let my dad borrow it after us. I didn't find it too dystopian but I can kind of see what you mean now. We're reading The Creakers at the moment and really enjoying that too. I love Tom Fletcher books.
