I was given a longer birth certificate name when I was born that I was literally never called by. Mumsnet love the name and think it’s classic, and also advocate for giving your child a name that you’re never going to address them by.
I hated being called something different from my formal name and the confusion around it so much that I changed it by deed poll to the shortened version as an adult.

Mumsnet love the name and think it’s classic. I think it’s horrible, boring, ten a Penny.

My shortened name I like. Think Middleton.

BearSoFair · 08/08/2021 11:19

I did a while ago, first two results were one person saying it's lovely and they wish you heard it more often, and one saying it's dated and doesn't work for anyone under 40 Grin

I don't like it myself!

LordFoofingtonismyMaster · 08/08/2021 12:32

Just looked mine up. It's an Irish name and there was a vicious debate almost a decade ago as to the correct pronunciation of it.

lborgia · 08/08/2021 12:32

Am astonished how often it comes up, and it seems generally everyone thinks it's great.

Unfortunately I feel stung by the one person who hates and loathes it.

That does feel a little extreme Grin

PearlFriday · 08/08/2021 12:35

I have seen comments about my name. General consensus seems to be that it will come back but not yet.

Lyricallie · 08/08/2021 12:43

Mine seems to be very "80s" although I was born a decade later. Two options of spelling, seems about 50/50 on people liking it. I think it's fairly inoffensive.

MumofSpud · 08/08/2021 12:48

Mine is a 'true classic' / 'strong' / 'boring' Grin
I went to school in the 70s/80s and was the only one of my name throughout and was always annoyed that it never appeared on personalised pencils / plastic crap in shops!

Hen2018 · 08/08/2021 15:06

My son’s name always comes up when people want a “cool” name, yet no one ever chooses it! I’ve only met one other person with it, yet everyone will have heard of it. (It was the name of a Dutch dog in Baptiste recently!)

My other son has what I thought was an unusual name but now I know 5 people with the same name and weirdly he has a colleague with the same name.

Boood · 08/08/2021 16:00

Mine gets “eurgh, why would you want your child to have the same name as five others in the same class”.
It was very unusual when it was given to me, it’s not my fault.

PearlFriday · 08/08/2021 16:04

There are a surprising number of threads with my name in the title.
I think the name is better received on mumsnet than it would be in real life. The best comment was like ''50s names are coming back''
I was named in the 70s but I always felt my name was a bit dated!

PearlFriday · 08/08/2021 16:39

@ThisCollie

My name is "100 per cent stripper" "reminds me of a prostitute" and "a dog's name" which sounds about right. I don't like it but when I was young people used to say it was cool.
I bet in real life nobody bats an eyelid. Mumsnet is a tough crowd.
CalamityGladys · 08/08/2021 17:06

I did - it’s quite unusual - so I posted myself that I was thinking of using it for a non existent child…..every single comment was DONT……saying why would you consider that name - what a vile sounding name it was - how it was guttural and awful……..well that told me.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/08/2021 17:09

no

it won't be there

TheCrowening · 08/08/2021 17:10

Yeah I’ve seen threads. People mostly hate it and think it’s old fashioned but not in a cool way. They’re probably right.

SheABitSpicyToday · 08/08/2021 17:11

I have one of the most hated names on mumsnet. Ands it’s spelt differently too for some extra hate.

TheCanyon · 08/08/2021 17:21

My name is very unique, not mentioned at all, even on the shit baby names threads....

PinkertonRab · 08/08/2021 17:28

Mine is common, chavvy and would never be a doctor or high court judge… I’m a doctor!

Clawdy · 08/08/2021 17:39

Which is the Baby Name board?

Bizjustgotreal · 08/08/2021 17:47

Wish I hadn't. That was depressing.

BeautifulWar · 08/08/2021 17:58

Mine comes up every now and then as a classic but not very common, international name. I like my name but definitely grew into it and would have loved the anonymity of being a Claire, Carly or Louise at school!

Duetorain · 08/08/2021 18:17

Surprised to see my name at all - well the usual spelling. Described as strong. Weirdly someone wanting a girly name and poster suggests my name and asks whether it is girly. Confused

Ooh how do I go about looking mine up? (I'm on a mobile)

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/08/2021 13:08

I read a thread fairly recently where my name was deemed "dated" and there were some other non complimentary phrases thrown in too. I'd say it's pretty classic but I daresay lots of people won't be aware it is older than the 1970s. It's also not heard as frequently as many other names my peers have.

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/08/2021 13:10

It's either unique or its not. I've always liked not having a name that lots of people have.
