I've got a lovely classic name!

But also someone has never met a nice

Cailleach · 11/03/2021 15:26

Oddly overwhelmingly positive. I hate it...

My name: Common as muck Essex girl
DS: pretentious hipster
DD: Pretty but boring
DH: They're everywhere. Yawn

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 07/08/2021 09:26

A mixed bag really. Some people think it’s old fashioned and very 70’s.

Others think it’s lovely and Nordic and unusual.

It’s funny to see people discussing different spellings and pronunciations of your name that you’ve only ever known one single way of spelling and saying.

WimpoleHat · 07/08/2021 09:36

Apparently I have a classic name that’s coming back in vogue. I can’t see it. I’ve never liked my name and I think it’s set to be a real “old lady’s name” in 20 years or so…..

MargaretThursday · 07/08/2021 11:47

Generally thought of as old fashioned. Tbf there were lots by my name about 5-10 years before me but not so many my age.
I haven't come across anyone younger than me with the same name. Whereas my dsis whose name was really rare (I think I only knew one other person with the same name growing up) back then, has had a revival-I've even got a niece of the same name now! She hates other people having her name though.

Interestingly people tend to like the long version, which is what my actual name is, but not the abbreviation I use. Some people like an alternative abbreviation, which some people use for me, but I would never use it myself.
I find it interesting because I think the full name does sound stuffy and old-fashioned, but I quite like my abbreviation.
I'm not changing it for you lot anyway. Grin

My name's are classic and traditional but out of fashion at the moment. I've always liked them (and so did Mr and Mrs Middleton!!)

Orangelover · 07/08/2021 12:01

Mine has been described as 70s chav, 90s chav, downmarket... absolutely nothing positive at all Grin

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 07/08/2021 12:39

Mine is forever popular and classic but the odd poster has called it "wet" or boring.

I wouldn't have used it tbh (if it wasn't my name) as it's too ordinary lol my girls have uncommon names (although still classic)

bluetongue · 07/08/2021 23:48

I wish I hadn’t! Very 70’s and American apparently and won’t be making a comeback Sad

Then I looked up the other name my parents were considering which is much nicer and European / Italian sounding (we’re from boring English stock) and the comments were much nicer. Why couldn’t my parents have picked that name!

Hen2018 · 08/08/2021 01:55

I’ve just looked up my name on the MN name generator. My name is British and at no point has ever been a male name. (Think of Mary, Susan etc as an example).

It suggests the middle name to go with my name should be Marcus!

Nc123 · 08/08/2021 07:40

Apparently it’s smart and classic.

It was very common when I was growing up - there were three others in my year at school. Weirdly when I got to uni I was the only one I knew.

CarolinaWeeper · 08/08/2021 07:52

I've never looked but just had a quick nosy and got every comment from "It's lovely and classy" to "sounds like someone on a council estate in the 80s." Grin

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 08/08/2021 07:59

My name is apparently a granny name old and dated

Ylvamoon · 08/08/2021 08:09

My name only has come up recently thanks to some popular movie ... and the common consensus is: to harsh, does not go with the English language, ...
Really?

ChocolateRiver · 08/08/2021 08:15

Mine always crops up when someone wants a classic name, particularly one that works well in different countries. I didn’t like it when I was younger because it was rare where I lived. I wanted a name like my friends - Emma, Gemma, Kelly, Rachel etc. I like it now though as a grown up.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/08/2021 08:27

Mine has only ever been suggested as a middle name. And for a French feel....

DD2s name makes regular appearances on the posh names list.
DD1 was once mentioned as an unusual boys name. To be fair, in E&W there's an average of boys and 12 girls called it annually.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 08/08/2021 08:33

Pretty positive for mine although concerns about pronunciation outside of the country it originates from. I have experienced this in real life and have been called all sorts of strange things but it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I love my name.

ThisCollie · 08/08/2021 08:37

My name is "100 per cent stripper" "reminds me of a prostitute" and "a dog's name" which sounds about right. I don't like it but when I was young people used to say it was cool.

MyMushroomsInATimeSlip · 08/08/2021 08:45

Lovely name

Or

Old fashioned, fussy and unbearably twee.

sashh · 08/08/2021 08:55

My original name and spelling are offered as alternatives other than the one poster who has it as a middle name and is passing it on to her daughter as a middle name.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 08/08/2021 09:00

I've only met one other person with my name as it's unusual, but it seems to come up once every other year in the baby name board.

Noone is sure how to pronounce it which is the story of my life. It's described as dated and the possible name of a cartoon mouse. And people either love it or hate it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/08/2021 09:26

Mine is a classic, ‘royal’ name, so many people like it, but of course those who go for ‘yoonique’ names often think it’s boring.
I’ve often been thankful to my folks for giving me a name that would neither date nor pigeonhole me.

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 08/08/2021 10:33

My husbands name I can't find it on any baby name lists.
