When you say a phrase and it immediately reminds you of a song and you start singing it

Sorry for the clunky title, but I have two.
Most recent; tonight, DH and me were talking about nothing, just chitchat about our teenage kids and random sayings they say, and he said “it means nothing to me” then he went “ohhh Vienna”
Made us laugh. Although you probably had to be there.

The other one is last March when we had a team meeting at work just before first lockdown, we are a tiny company, only 4 of us. My boss ended a lengthy uplifting talk saying “where do we go from here”
My lovely colleague immediately said “is it down to the lake I fear”

You probably had to be there for that one too!

"who can tell?" - Princess Ida
"it's raining again" - Supertramp

I'm sure there are more...

In a former workplace we had what was an infinite song lyric Olympics where we did this. For example...
"So know one told you?"
[bursts into Friends theme tune] "LIFE WAS GONNA BE THIS WAAAAAAY"

One of the blokes would then mark it down in a wee book in his desk drawer Grin such fun!

dudsville · 15/02/2021 21:39

We do this all the time . But surely "where do we go from here " is from Buffy the musical?!

See I'd say "this isn't where we intended to beeee"
BeautifulStar · 15/02/2021 21:42

Dd earlier on a walk said “I like that green front door” and I immediately launched into “behind the green door” by Shakin stevens while she looked on in bemusement.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 15/02/2021 21:46

Oh god yes - it's a curse I inherited from my DF and I can't stop Grin

mnahmnah · 15/02/2021 21:48

‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’. I actually can’t just say it anymore. I have to do my best Kelly clarkson impression

RightOnTheEdge · 15/02/2021 21:49

I do this all the time! My dc just think I'm mad.
"Muuuum! Why do you have a song for everything?" 😆

MrsSugar · 15/02/2021 21:55

Literally any time someone says I’ve got the key I instantly sing in my head I’ve got the secret !

riotlady · 15/02/2021 22:04

@dudsville yes, that's what I always start singing too!

My toddler DD is very into playing phones and the amount of times I've gone "who you gonna call?" and my DP has immediately gone "GHOSTBUSTERS!"

smallandimperfectlyformed · 15/02/2021 22:08

My girls hate it whenever anyone says 'turn around' at home because I immediately add Bright Eyes- Total Eclipse of The Heart! Especially annoys my oldest but I couldn't stop even if I wanted to (I don't!)!

Fuss · 15/02/2021 22:09

@ClashCityRocker

We're halfway there...
Can only ever hear 'pigeon on s chair' in response to that one now.

On a similar note I've recently changed to president butter and every time I see it I get the urge to sing Duran Duran 'meet El presidente'. It's starting to get annoying.

aaaaaAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!

Living on a prayer...

TwoZeroTwoZero · 15/02/2021 22:15

Whenever anyone says that it's thundering and lightning I have to sing, "Very very frightening me! Galileo, Galileo Figaro magnifico-o-o..." etc until someone tells me to shut up.

I know the line starts with thunderbolt btw

Fuss · 15/02/2021 22:15

Quit4me · 15/02/2021 22:16

🤣🤣 I do so many of these! My kids also think we are crazy and also say we have a song for everything!!

VienneseWhirligig · 15/02/2021 22:16

Haha yes! In fact so much so that we just shorthand to saying "Vienna" if we have no idea what someone is going on about Grin

Clawdy · 15/02/2021 22:16

"Come on, Eileen" - think my friend Eileen's sick of that one!

Quit4me · 15/02/2021 22:18

What often happens though is that after we have sing the phrase and the kids have looked at us big eyed, we feel compelled to ask Alexa to play it and then DH and I sing along! Kids normally are like ehhh!!?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/02/2021 22:18

Many times every day.

And frequently on the phone to my dd she’ll sign off with love you, and I reply love you more, then sing love you more than thaaaat.

I annoy myself.

TroyTown · 15/02/2021 22:19

If ever anyone says anything along the lines of “I don’t know what to do with myself” I feel compelled to sing it Dusty Springfield style.

Musing “Maybe it’s because...” gets followed with “I’m a Londoner”.

At a meeting recently someone said “We’ve only just begun...” and I had to stop myself going into a Karen Carpenter routine.

Comefromaway · 15/02/2021 22:19

Mine are really obscure.

If I ask dd to get the sugar she will answer “Butter, Flour” (Waitress)

If you say Pardon Me I’ll reply “Are you Aaron Burr, Sir?” (Hamilton)

SnowyBranches · 15/02/2021 22:21

Every day I do this. Every single day. Several times. It’s got to the point where DS goes “surely there’s not a song about that!” or “I just don’t believe that’s a song”. Last night DH said “put another log on the fire” so obviously I had to sing “put another log on the fire for me, I’ve made some breakfast and coffee”.
Also “What time is it?” “SHOWTIME!”

PlasticCupPolitics · 15/02/2021 22:22

When anyone starts a sentence with “question” it has to be followed up with a sassy: “tell me what ya think about me?” à la Destiny’s Child.

My husband does this for every sentence/phrase and song imaginable. Trying to have a conversation with him is like having a conversation with a Disney Princess. Never know when he might burst into song.
