When you say a phrase and it immediately reminds you of a song and you start singing it

Sorry for the clunky title, but I have two.
Most recent; tonight, DH and me were talking about nothing, just chitchat about our teenage kids and random sayings they say, and he said “it means nothing to me” then he went “ohhh Vienna”
Made us laugh. Although you probably had to be there.

The other one is last March when we had a team meeting at work just before first lockdown, we are a tiny company, only 4 of us. My boss ended a lengthy uplifting talk saying “where do we go from here”
My lovely colleague immediately said “is it down to the lake I fear”

You probably had to be there for that one too!

I love this.
Once I was feeling really down and a colleague said to me " I feel sad when your sad".
Cue Barrie Manilow Can't smile without you.

Cheered me right up actually.

Disneyblue · 16/02/2021 09:11

You see when I hear 'Do you remember?' I follow it with:
When we had so much fun?
I used to cry sometime
Those days are gone
Do you remember

Cue truancy dance music

Is it just me? Certain age perhaps?

isoflix · 16/02/2021 09:12

Barry not Barrie!

JamieFrasersSassenach · 16/02/2021 09:14

Constantly!! My most frequent one I think is - Stop!
I have 3 responses, it will depend on many factors which one is used :

1 In the name of love

  1. Collaborate and listen
  1. Right there, thank you very much

There are many others too - my life seems to be dominated by lines of lyrics from songs!! Grin

Huggabugga · 16/02/2021 09:15

Yep, me too. I'm waiting for the day Homes under the hammer offers me a job.

mommybunny · 16/02/2021 09:16

My DCs are always complaining I have a song for everything, and that I know all the lyrics for every song ever written (except, I suppose, songs written in their lifetimes).

I do feel lonely though because my DH hasn’t a musical bone in his body (he never gets ear worms! How the hell is that even possible?!). In addition, most of my, ahem, repertoire comes from the US where I spent my teenage years (the 80s) and twenties (the 90s), and consequently where my musical tastes were fixed.

But a bit of “Everybody Hurts” now and then never hurt anyone. 😁

LaMarschallin · 16/02/2021 09:27

Whenever the topic on "Pointless" is "pop music" it almost makes me feel uncomfortable if I don't follow up with:

"Shooby dooby doo wop
A wop bop doo wop...
Talk about...
Pop music!"

Noticed that PPs have a song for "Got the keys?".
For us it's the ""Friends" quote:
"Got the keys?".

Allywill · 16/02/2021 09:31

When someone is counting ....one.... I jump in “singular sensation...” It actually happened during labour, can’t remember why the midwife was counting but I had that song in my head all through labour. I did start singing it under my breath to try and get rid of it.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 16/02/2021 09:44

@RightOnTheEdge

I do this all the time! My dc just think I'm mad. "Muuuum! Why do you have a song for everything?" 😆
Same

I also get ear worms A LOT

TeenMinusTests · 16/02/2021 09:47

We do this a lot, but mainly with musicals.

What time is it?

  • It's our vacation

I've put it on the list

  • And they'll none of them be missed
EdnaMole · 16/02/2021 09:47

Once knew a Nikita and always had to stop myself breaking into song and asking if it was cold in his little corner of the world...

IEat · 16/02/2021 09:48

It’s raining....followed by Men hallelujah it’s raining men

AlexaPlayWhiteNoise · 16/02/2021 09:58

I didnt think anyone else knew that song!! Do you also do jazz hands and a time step to accompany!? like I do
MariahLucas · 16/02/2021 10:06

I went to bed singing and have started again now with one singular sensation! I miss Friday afternoons in the office, there was often a cream cake and a wee song or two. I’ll try and get through my zoom call this morning sensibly but I think there may be a lot of so, a needle pulling thread.....focus Mariah focus!

Spidey66 · 16/02/2021 10:06

@dudsville

We do this all the time . But surely "where do we go from here " is from Buffy the musical?!
No no no! It's definitely Haircut100!
BogRollBOGOF · 16/02/2021 10:07

DC shouts "Let me go!"
Me "Bismillah No! I not let you go!"
Grin

The DCs now follow I've got the key with "I've got the secret"

I wonder how... has led to a family revival of Fool's Garden's Lemon Tree, a little well forgotten hit from 1996.
I wonder how. I wonder why, yesterday you told me bout the blue, blue sky. But all that I could see was just a yellow lemon tree.

bearlyactive · 16/02/2021 10:15

Reminds me of the scene in Miranda where her friend says "Now if we sell..." and Miranda jumps in with "Ceeeeeel-ebrate good times!" Grin

nowaynowaymanamana · 16/02/2021 10:17

@Disneyblue oh I love this song ! I'm adding it to my playlist now!

Allywill · 16/02/2021 11:09

Alexaplaywhitenoise - not during labour at any rate!!!

merryhouse · 16/02/2021 11:23

Slightly tangentially: one of the "suits" in Mah-Jonng is bamboo, and whenever I discard the "one" piece I preface it with

a wop bop a loola

yesyoudoknowme · 16/02/2021 11:29

We do this too, my son now just rolls his eyes and waits for us to stop before continuing with what he was saying as if nothing had interrupted... Grin

AndeanMountainCat · 16/02/2021 12:44

When I can’t make my mind up: “indecision clouds my vision, no one listens...”

What’s the time? “It’s time to get ill!”

Rosemary (or strawberry), “heaven restores you in life.”

HelloViroids · 16/02/2021 12:47

@AlexaPlayWhiteNoise every move that she makes!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/02/2021 12:59

In other countries they make tv shows out of this. Someone from Ireland told me I would do well on this show, and Ive seen the incredibly cheesy Danish version too.

Snooks1971 · 16/02/2021 21:18

@Justmuddlingalong

There's a guy in our town who has a dog called Eileen. I love to hear him say "come on Eileen", it makes me smile every time I hear it.
Oh god that is superb. I bloody love it. I really hope that the dog (Eileen) is wearing dungarees with nothing underneath when out for walks, although that would be cruel, but amusing.
