Well I've just measured my children's feet. My son definitely needs the next size up (probably a good thing, his school shoes are a disgrace). However my daughter is the same size but needs a wider width. I've got her to try them on but she has said how incredibly tight her shoes are. What is the likelihood that both children have been out of shoes so long they've forgotten how they feel? They've been wearing wellies and hiking boots out the house.

Possibly. DS1 (who admittedly could give the princess and the pea a run for her money!) kicks up a stink about new school shoes every September.

My two have been in trainers/ snow boots/ walking shoes for the last couple of months.

They tend to need a measure and often an upgrade at this time of year. We normally go to the independent shop (I gave up on Clarkes as several pairs of shoes fell apart before they were grown out of). They're good with things like DS1's orthotics.

Poor DS1 inherited my feet... we do not do blind buying!

There were some in lockdown #1 who did admit to being very introverted and enjoying the release of FOMO when they do stand their ground on social engagements.
5 house points for honesty at least. -20 hp to those where that is the underlying issue but they hide it under the veneer of caring about grannies/ teachers/ the community when really they're too spineless to assert their boundaries.

Then there's the project fear health anxiety that's been pushed for a year.

People also don't like updating their opinions. The Covid risk has not been uniform for the past year. This time last year was the highest risk point with a lack of measures and understanding of the virus spread. I've tried bloody hard to be patient as rates have been high and been falling off, and given that I was crumbling 8 months ago when we were 3 months in, I've done well to survive this far without going onto the medical kind of ADs!
I was optomistic last year, probably a bit too much, but recognised that a second wave would be far more likely over the winter than from flocking to Bournemouth beach or doing a VE day conga. Nor did queuing outside Primark or going to pubs suddenly cause it either. I stand by it being a folly not to return all schools last June and believe that that caused more issues for September by suddenly exposing young people to society for the first time in nearly 6 months. I wish schools were back in today, but it's a pointless argument now, but gosh I'll be skipping for joy back out of the school gates at 9:11 8/3, because it's good more the kids and yes, good for my well being.

@TrustTheGeneGenie

they're already salivating over the next lockdown over there.. Someone said november, someone else september, and someone else said may school holidays.

I dont get it - if we are vaccinating people why will we need to lock down again?!?!?!

The government is very clear that this should be the last lockdown. There are a lot of people out there who have worked themselves up into a frenzy of fear, having swallowed the "covid=hospital=death" bollocks the government and the BBC have been feeding us for 12 months. They believe that lockdown is safe, if I stay in I'll be OK.... Now it's dawning on people that this is coming to an end. For months all the experts they love have been saying that vaccination is our way out, and due to the seasonality of the virus, things should be normal by spring. Now spring is almost upon us and the fear that outside=covid=death is massive. They don't feel safe outside they want to stay home, so are collectively losing their minds.

It's a bit like when a long time prisoner is about to be released. The panic and worry of how and if they will be able to fit back into society is huge.

Of course there's also a small group who are just loving staying at home and baking banana bread whilst judging others, that won't want this to end. But I think they are probably the minority. Also, tough shit. This has got to end and they will just have to find a way to deal with it.

LadyCounterblast · 22/02/2021 14:44

Very true @LivinLaVidaLoki

Also, re predicting future lockdowns... there's a small cohort of people who seem to derive enjoyment from scaring others, especially around health conditions. I don't know why they do it. My grandmother used to be like this. There was no barely-there symptom that wouldn't lead her to gleefully predict something nasty and fatal, based on something she'd apparently heard from her friend's sister's neighbour's gardener's taxidermist's pig-wrestler's osteopath.

Just watched Boris and feel strangely hopeful.

SpnBaby1967 · 22/02/2021 16:02

I'm feeling hopeful. I have the windows open, school run only needed a hoodie, DS9 is at the park with his mate (girls are hibernating in their bedroom as usual).

But as the weather improves people will want their lives back!

LadyCounterblast · 22/02/2021 16:04

Me too. It's an odd feeling. I'm not by nature a Boris 'fan'. But there seemed to be some sense there, at least.

I especially noted this: 'there is no credible route to a zero-covid future'. Good; I think if they'd started to chase that particular Moby Dick I'd have lost the plot.

Worldgonecrazy · 22/02/2021 16:07

Interesting that the good stuff is always the stuff ADs have been pushing for, e.g. not pursuing zero covid, the benefits of vitamin d, the push against societal damage.

Our government are popularists and we need to shout loudly about what we want to happen.

rosettesforjill · 22/02/2021 16:16

I have to say though - 17th May feels a long way away for meeting indoors. I can't believe the vaccinated population are going to meekly obey that.

MrsEWeatherwax · 22/02/2021 16:20

When can masks go? Apparently you wear your glasses to see board but then take them off!! For school !! So my DD won’t be able to seeHmm. Some people need them to see in distance and to read!
I walk around supermarket with my glasses off, but I can’t see! So being able to see isn’t important now. My mask bloody fits but my whole face gets hot!
I hate my life, who in north east is going to go out for meal, it’s bloody freezing sitting still. Roll on End of May when I can sit in.

justasking111 · 22/02/2021 16:24

It appears to have been decided that we shall not go mad at Easter. Well we met for xmas day and the figures did not go bonkers. But we are not to be trusted.

Yep. Total agree.
Chipsahoy · 22/02/2021 16:31

12th April for shops? What on earth and 17th may before meeting indoors? When will this madness end?

Masks in classrooms? My 13 year old will hate that.

TrustTheGeneGenie · 22/02/2021 16:37

i'm not watching i'm relying on you lot for updates!

my friend just text me saying no restrictions after june... and that we can still get married. Well we could, if our venue hadnt closed down! I really must get around to telling everyone or theyll all turn up at a closed venue... oops!

starfish88 · 22/02/2021 16:40

My predictions were strangely accurate! I had the 15th rather than the 12th but the stuff happening then I got right. I had the beginning of May but less stuff in my step 3 equivalent. And to think this shit could be gone totally by the end of June. I bet there is so much frothing over there. Dare I venture? Grin

ISaySteadyOn · 22/02/2021 16:40

Masks in primary schools too or not? U too rely on you lot for news

Donoteatthekittens · 22/02/2021 16:41

I shall be seeing people indoors when I wish from 29th March. Happy days!

Chipsahoy · 22/02/2021 16:43

Masks is secondary schools where so is distancing isn’t possible. Such as classrooms and corridors.

SpnBaby1967 · 22/02/2021 16:47

Unlikely I'd have thought.
LivinLaVidaLoki · 22/02/2021 16:47

Apparently, like foreign travel there is a separate review regarding social distancing measures such as masks to be completed by 12th April.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 22/02/2021 16:48

@ISaySteadyOn

Not. I think in secondary, though sure I've seen somewhere it's only for a few weeks.
thefallthroughtheair · 22/02/2021 16:55

Great Post BogRoll
Absolute madness to keep schools closed to the many last summer.

thefallthroughtheair · 22/02/2021 16:58

starfish
No for Christ's sake don't venture over there. A bunch of them have probably already 'lost loved ones to this terrible virus' just thinking about our repulsive disease-vectors being allowed an actual education.

justasking111 · 22/02/2021 17:00

did he mention uk holidays? Properties, caravans etc.??
