I read this and thought of this thread.

CruCru · 22/02/2021 11:13

The same woman wrote this in the Times: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/goodbye-home-school-i-have-my-life-back-fzk0kdgzj

I won't copy it all out but there's a bit where she writes "The cost has been a bonfire of my work, thoughts, hopes, exercise and friendships — because that is what had to give if my children weren’t going to be left to rot. The result has been, and still is, total surrender. "

Basically, she writes what I would write if I were actually a good writer.

Buzzinwithbez · 22/02/2021 11:29

@Gratefulrunner

I didn’t even realise that sitting on a bench was not allowed, oops.

Whilst I feel happy about all the upcoming announcements etc I also no longer trust the govt and BJ after all the U turns and false promises. I’ll believe it all when I see it!!

Yes, I have a shining feeling they're going to tell us we can do what we already can, with much fanfare. A bit like back in the first lockdown when they said we could meet with one other person when it had always been written into the legislation that we could.
BogRollBOGOF · 22/02/2021 11:30

Home schooling is definitely the total surrender of my life. How many times in one hour can you go and retrieve a 7 year old because he just wanders off in boredom. I can't even load the dishwasher in the same room as he wriggles off when I turn my back. I have to be literally next to him, normally with some physical contact and it's too draining. I can't have simple pleasures like Ken Bruce and the Pop Master quiz on which sounds trivial, but actually it is sacrifice right down to tiny minutae. It is totally inhibiting when the need to attempt to battle with the home learning and not interrupt DH who's near constantly on calls with his voice echoing through the house, and I just feel bottom of the heap in importance.

When I gave up working to meet the DCs' needs, the compensation was that I gained time to be myself and do things in my own way, and that makes me a better person to be and live with.

My family may overall be in one of the better, more stable craft in this storm, but there are definitely different classes going on within it!

Buzzinwithbez · 22/02/2021 11:32

Sinking feeling.

Orangeblossom1977 · 22/02/2021 11:35

Just coming on here to say how glad I am to hear schools going back on the 8th, and how depressing other areas of the site can be right now.

Over 50s all to be vaccinated by mid April! That is really good.

Fingers crossed things will improve now. Have just had half term with the pasty teens here back to computer work today. Will be very good for them to get into school again.

Flowers to all struggling, hope this is the beginning of the end of it all..

CruCru · 22/02/2021 11:37

Yes! I am so, so glad that schools are going back. I need to measure my children's feet (I have a Clark's measurer) and order them some new school shoes.

I have just been ordering new school trousers! Grin

Another thing which I will mention here but not elsewhere is that details of the plan are out and it won't just be based on case numbers anymore, different from other times, but a different measure

Infection rates do not risk a surge in hospital admissions

So I presume more about the rates in certain age groups..
Other criteria and comment by Nick Triggle was useful...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56148160

There's lots of dementing going on about rates going up (but it's not that simple anymore due to the vaccines) and also about variants, but the vaccines still prevent serious illness and hospitalisations...

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 22/02/2021 11:54

Yes, it appears (subject to further details later today) that there will be a variety of benchmarks, including hospitalisations due to Covid, the continued success of the jab roll out, deaths as a result of Covid, and infection levels. Positive cases alone are not determinative.

Great news about the jabs today too.

I saw that @Orangeblossom1977 and I was so relieved.
BogRollBOGOF · 22/02/2021 12:39

That's great about the rates.

How many millions of colds are there per year? It's not risk-free as they are potentially serious to a small section of the population, but because for the vast majority, it's a minor nuisence, we don't really care.

The problem with Covid all along was the level of medical care that severe cases required, and that risk is plummeting rapidly.

In many areas CEV is already vaccinated and pretty much all should have been done by the time children return for Easter. That does leave a gap for the CEV u18s, and I do think families in that position should be allowed to educate at home and keep their space open if they feel it is necessary fot their circumstances.

The great benefit of going back in a couple of weeks is it gives 3 weeks to adjust back to school life and pick up the routine, and establishes that the Easter holiday is a holiday rather than pure lockdown.

starfish88 · 22/02/2021 12:45

I have the occasional wobble that they will try to keep the powers they have as long as they have but I also sort of feel that Boris wants to get this done now. I think he hopes he can get rid of most of not all of the restrictions by summer and retire, in his mind at least, the hero who ended covid and got Brexit done with the vaccination triumph of beating the EU. I wouldn't be surprised if at that point he hands over to Rishi who then is lumbered with the financial costs, after all he was the one that furloughed everyone. Boris has always wanted to be a hero

TrustTheGeneGenie · 22/02/2021 12:50

they're already salivating over the next lockdown over there.. Someone said november, someone else september, and someone else said may school holidays.

I dont get it - if we are vaccinating people why will we need to lock down again?!?!?!

@trustthegenegenie it is full on batshit crazy over there today. Like some kind of collective hysteria has taken hold.

Unfortunately, a proportion of the population likes authoritarianism for its own sake, plus lockdown brings many fruitful opportunities to judge and belittle others etc. I genuinely believe it is a small proportion though.

Because for some reason they all keep saying the vulnerable arent vaccinated??

I'm confused, of course there will be some areas that are behind but on a whole we are way ahead of the curve on vaccines here. Plus the whole "not vaccinated until both doses" but I thought the second one was more like a booster? Do we consider babies not vaccinated until preschool booster rolls around?

Not to mention at best the flu vaccine has a 50% efficacy, yet no one declares the flu vaccinated folk as unvaccinated.

Just feels like a constant moving of doom goal posts.

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 22/02/2021 13:08

I just pop over to these threads from time to time, especially when there is an update from the PM because it seems to be the only sensible place on MN!

dont get it - if we are vaccinating people why will we need to lock down again?!?!?!

Agree! And I really don't understand the mindset that says ooh new variants will come that the vaccine won't be effective against. When the likelihood is that the vaccines will work.
Also why do they think the scientists won't be working on developing the vaccines? They haven't all gone home, they're still working on developing new vaccines and researching new strains.

The pandemic and lockdowns are disasters for this country, for business and the economy. Surely they realise the Conservative government will be working to avoid future lockdowns at all costs? And they clearly see vaccines as the way out. Do people really think they've stopped here?
I mean I'm no Tory but they are known for being interested in protecting the economy and business.

What is it about people that seem to want to believe the worst?!

Orangeblossom1977 · 22/02/2021 13:09

I know they have been doing trials of the Oxford vaccine on children recently, so fingers crossed the CEV children can get that soon.

flower11 · 22/02/2021 13:10

Feeling a glimmer of hope. The sun is shining today and I now need to order the youngest some new school shoes!

TrustTheGeneGenie · 22/02/2021 13:13

collective hysteria is a very good way of describing it. Its madness!

and yes, people seem to be clinging on to lock down.... WHY!?

The man on the radio just told me that theyve found your first dose reduces your chances of ending up in hospital between 85 and 90 odd % (dependant on vaccine)

now i am not an expert but thats great, isnt it?

surely that alone will dramatically reduce hospitalisations and deaths - and then who cares about the cases?

Orangeblossom1977 · 22/02/2021 13:16

More from Nick Triggle on that you mentioned TrusttheGenieGenie

Funny how he does the more positive stuff and they wheel out that doommonger other one for the gloomy stuff Wink

Iheartmysmart · 22/02/2021 13:16

I saw this the other day. It was in another context but seems quite apt.

We’ve said before on this thread and others that some people have never experienced loss or tragedy in their lives so don’t know how to deal with this hence the continuing drama.

Will be very pleased when schools reopen, for everyone.Smile

As for the rest of it, well, I didn't exactly have high hopes. I do think a certain amount of caution is required for a bit longer. But personally, it's still going to be months before I get to see my family (they live too far away to meet in a park, & are ultra-cautious).

Same old, same old. It just hit me.Sad

Same here, faint flutters of hopefulness. Trying not to get carried away and then gutted later.

Also I have daffodils on the table which always seem to make me more cheerful.

@starfish88 You're so right, Saint Boris is going to stick around just long enough to wallow in the glory of the vaccines, and easing lockdown, even if he doesn't quite finish it; he'll do a big push on "you must spend, spend, spend to save the economy", then he will quietly shuffle off into the sunset before he can be blamed for the redundancies, unemployment, severely depressed children, suicides, and riots which are certain to be the legacy of his lockdown. "I didn't want to lock down, my hands were tied!!!!"
