@wanderings

I haven't yet seen those "over there" slagging us off, apart from general mention of covidiots and selfish arseholes, but even that once-ubiquitous term is rare over there now. I'm happy to say that two threads I'm on have been deleted, because the replies were turning absolutely vile.
We do sometimes get mentions dragged up, but MNHQ are pretty good on deletions (TAAT). We seem to have an unfair reputation for mass rule-breaking Covid-spreading granny-killing Grin

TBH now that we're far less of a niche opinion base than we were last year, and most people are beyond fed-up, questioning the bigger picture and not screeching about the minutae of the rules, it's pretty daft to target us now.

Someone name changed to start a thread specifically about us, about how bloody awful we are one day last week. How we are all murdering bastards who just can't follow the rules. It got deleted.

Also she who must not be named will randomly reference us.....

ISaySteadyOn · 21/02/2021 19:39

Wow. Glad I hid the coronavirus board. I go on here and FWR and that's it.

Worldgonecrazy · 21/02/2021 20:29

I need to stay off the other boards. I am so tempted to post ridiculous answers to all the stupids.

Hello lovely ADs

I have a question which I can't ask anywhere else because everyone will shout at me for being low news.

Why do people worry about which vaccine they get? I have looked online and see there's a possible difference in efficacy but that seems to be it?

I have been called for mine, as mum's carer. I don't care which one it is but wonder why others do. Mum was particularly keen to have Pfizer.

I feel quite stressed. I am obviously anti lockdown but not anti vax, but it's hard to shake the feeling of participating in something that is being handled so immorally.

On my walk today, I saw a family shouting at each other through a window, a grandparent visit I think. The father was shouting through the window "but things have GOT to change, they will change tomorrow". A toddler was looking perplexed, two elderly folk were smiling weakly at the window.

MrsEWeatherwax · 21/02/2021 21:07

Good luck with whichever vaccine you receive AcornAutumn, from all the other threads, make sure you have paracetamol to hand.
Seems it’s a bit like when you take a baby for their injections and you make sure you have Calpol and you get extra cuddles. So take care of yourself.

TabbyStar · 21/02/2021 21:15

I only come here and FWR, also a Les Mills thread and occasionally something else non-covid-related.

I think some people want different vaccines because of interaction with pre-existing conditions or poss pregnancy and breast-feeding. Also DD (17) wasn't allowed Oxford because of her age and has to wait for another batch of Pfizer to turn up (healthcare worker).

TabbyStar · 21/02/2021 21:17

Oh and I think some of the initial Oxford stats related only to "younger" people IIRC, in particular the half dose thing.

AcornAutumn · 21/02/2021 21:23

Tabby that's weird, I wonder why. But I also thought under 18s weren't having it anyway?

MrsE I'm always stocked up like a chemist! No experience with babies..life is stressful enough with an oldie! Shock

I feel as if there was talk of one vax being traditionally made and one not. I wasn't really expecting to be vaccinated till late summer so it's a bit of a shock.

I haven't told my sister because she desperately wants it, and I haven't told my mother because I think, with the best of intentions, she won't remember that she's been asked not to tell sister.

AcornAutumn · 21/02/2021 21:23

tabby, cross post

Sorry, I don't know what the half dose business was?

Buzzinwithbez · 21/02/2021 21:31

Yes, the Oxford one is the type that has more history behind it, whereas the Pfizer one is an mRNA one.

I guess I'd want to know in advance so that I could read the leaflets and feel I was giving my full informed consent.

I hope it goes smoothly for you.

TabbyStar · 21/02/2021 21:32

DD is NHS so nearly got it whilst working in the vaccine clinic.

This explains the Oxford mistake www.bbc.com/news/health-55086927

Now I'm surprised mum wanted the Pfizer.

Oh well. I gather you get what's there on the day.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 21/02/2021 21:43

I have never asked what type of vaccination I am getting before and the only reason I really know that I had the Oxford one because I asked if I had to wait 15 minutes and they said that was for the Pfizer one. To be fair to the women who are asking about it, I am not planning on having any more children and am not particularly bothered about any effects on my fertility.

TheOrchidKiller · 21/02/2021 22:43

@AcornAutumn

Have had the exact same conversation with DPs tonight. A friend of theirs almost turned it down because the one on offer in the clinic that day wasn't as effective, in their opinion, as the one they had set their heart on having, after doing "extensive research". It sounded more like they were picking a new washing machine from a price-comparison website than going for a jab.

People have jabs for flu, or travel innoculations so that they can go on exotic holidays, & no one sits there asking how effective the brand of yellow fever vaccine is, do they? They just want to go on holiday & crack on.

I know the vaccines are new, so people might be more cautious, but how many medications have people taken in their lives with absolutely no idea of how long those medications have been around, & how effective they are?

To ask questions is fair enough, but most people I know seem happy to get what they're given.

SirSamuelVimes · 21/02/2021 23:04

So schools all back on March 8th? Fingers crossed it's a blanket "get them back in" order and he doesn't let the schools set their own timetable re. phased returns, dd's school took ages to get the select year groups back in the summer term.

Cautiously optimistic!

AcornAutumn · 21/02/2021 23:07

Thanks Orchid

I am usually one to ask all the questions about my prescriptions because you know the "rare side effects" section of the leaflet? That's often me.

Because I've been on news blackout - and was not expecting this so soon - I haven't done much homework, but I never did that for my flu jab either.

I really recommend the news blackout. Mum said to me today "you are so much calmer about this". But caveat, I don't have children which makes a big difference to the daily experience.

AcornAutumn · 21/02/2021 23:09

*this meaning lockdown

Mum was super pissed off today, we went for a walk and there's all these people out wandering because there's nothing else to do.

justasking111 · 21/02/2021 23:30

This made me laugh 🤣🤣

Yep, that made me smile too.

justasking111 · 21/02/2021 23:49

Whatever Boris says will not sway Drakeford so I am just an observer as to how England will move forward. However, I am reliably informed there will be a mass exit to the border as England opens up while Drakeford is flapping like a plaice on a fishmongers counter.

NannyGythaOgg · 21/02/2021 23:54

I think the choice between Pfizer and Oxford is similar to Nike or Adidas OR Apple or Samsung.

My very intelligent sister wants the Astra Zeneca - after much research, because she went to Oxford Uni. (an' it's British)

Loads of people on Twitter doing their absolute pieces about hairdressers not opening till May. Not so many replies telling them they are selfish this time.
So altogether they will have been shut for nine months of the last year.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/02/2021 00:50

I can safely say that I'm not visiting my MiL from tomorrow... for a start, DS's passport must be expiring any day now! For another, thanks to the EU programme at 89, she's hoping to get her vaccination shortly... if it's in stock that day...

I did randomly think earlier, what happens about vaccination when you can't wear face coverings? It's obviously a higher risk venue than my quiet late night food shopping.
I'm not expecting a summons in too much of a hurry, but I will enter a new age group in the near future and on current predictions will be in the same age range as DH.

The past year has definitely proven that I'm not in the market to TTC again! So that wouldn't be a factor in vaccine choice. I have no preference.
