How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

I also like veg mash, potatoes carrot turnip all mashed together. Celeriac and potato. Sweet potato and potato are nice too but not with sausage. I'm just a veg fanatic

I buy the 97% meat sausages and a portion is 2. I would probably give growing boys 3 maybe 4 but wouldn’t give a massive amount of potatoes. 1/4 plate protein, 1/4 plate starch (potatoes) and half a plate veg.

There's been a disturbing lack of innuendo on this thread considering the word sausage has been mentioned 5000 times.

It seems big meaty ones are favoured. Nudge nudge.

@LAgeDeRaisin

DH is an olympic rower so has 27 but he has them while on the ergonometer.

I hope his broad manly shoulders give you butterflies.

This thread has made me laugh as it's
reminded me of a post I saw recently on 'rate my plate', (photo attached) - although I did think at the time the quantity of sausages here was a little excessive!! 😅

DD has 1 while she studies at Oxford (RG), tall and willowy. She's really popular too and volunteers teaching blind puppies to read. The puppies have 2.

DS17, athletic, has 1 blended into his protein shake.

I had a cocktail sausage at a birthday party when I was 9 and am still full. HUGE salad though.

As your DS is merely "athletic" and not "an exceptional sportsman who plays at county level", he is clearly destined to be a burden on the NHS as a result of his gluttony.

And I hope those blind puppies didn't come from a backyard breeder. Your DD could be unwittingly supporting the industry. Shock

I like cabbage with sausage and mash. Cook it with onion and a stock cube. But I like mostly veg so would have one sausage, mash, peas and cabbage with mushroom gravy. Fella would have same but with two sausages and veg with a little mash because he is not a spud lover.

that sounds tasty and a good ensemble.
it's wise to move towards using meat as a flavouring, mixed in with vegetables say, and thus reducing the quantity esp of processed meat eaten.

Before pregnancy me and dp would have 3 each out of a pack of 6 (400g) and homemade mash. Dp also has a tin of beans. While pregnant the sausages got upped to a pack each and hasn't been reduced. Baby's a year old now lol. We don't always eat it all though. Makes nice leftovers for lunch next day Smile

Four sausages? faints A forkful of potato and a lick of gravy would be enough to see me through the day. This is why we have an obesity crisis, think of the NHS, etc.
I hope this is a joke?

Yes i hoped she was joking about eating a whole entire forkful of mash too, people like this really should do more to support the nhs properly rather than clapping their bingo wings on their specially reinforced doorsteps

2 sausages each for a 5 or 6 year old sounds a bit much.
wouldn't one be enough, with plenty of vegetables/salad/pasta.

If we are talking a big fat butchers sausage then that's different that a slim chipolata. Had the most delicious Spanish sausage from the butchers the other day, they were big and fat, one would have probably been enough. But a chipolata, maybe I could manage 3.

going back to OP, i don't think it is greedy, but i would be concerned about setting up unhealthy habits of excessive consumption of processed meat which is linked to cancer etc.

Yes lads! Fucking love a mumsnet food thread!

"Can't imagine 4 sausages" 😆

Not only can I imagine four sausages....my husband and I had four sausages each for dinner tonight. The teens and my dad also had four each. We had mash, but all find it a bit too much....unlike the sausages which are manna from heaven.
