How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

Exhausteddog

Judging by your user name I imagine you are troughing desserts like no ones business and causing enormous strain on the NHS when you should be quite content with a couple of grapes, and a tangerine st Christmas!

Brilliant ! Grin

I would eat 2, DH is a builder and our 4 sons all have heavy manual jobs so they would happily eat half a dozen each but only get 4 each. The would have fruit crumble and custard afterwards. Come supper they would eat 3 0r 4 slices of cheese and toast and a pint of milk.

I would say 3/4 is normal. My husband will upto 6 though if there are extra. My teen son will eat 4/5.

Four sausages? faints A forkful of potato and a lick of gravy would be enough to see me through the day. This is why we have an obesity crisis, think of the NHS, etc.

I hope this is a joke?

It depends on the person I think, and what you eat during the day as some have tiny breakfast and lunch and a bigger evening meal. I have two sausages (smallish Richmond ones) but DH will have 3 or 4.

Hmm at all the Judgy McJudgyson comments about 2 being more than enough! I walk at least 10,000 steps a day, run 5 miles a couple of times a week and will easily eat 3 or 4 sausages a sitting. You have no idea what calorie requirements are per person so what is more than enough for you may mean someone else not getting enough calories. We have a problem in this country with people not eating enough aswell as over eating so maybe bear that in mind before commenting as you may push someone into under eating!

"I hope this is a joke?"

No? Anything more than a sniff gravy and looking at one pea is sheer greed.

If I went to a pub or restaurant and ordered bangers & mash I would expect to be served max 3 sausages. Out of interest, would people who normally have more at home be disappointed to be served that?

I have one whilst wearing my £1000 coat, as you know, buy cheap, buy twice.

We have big sausages so 2 is plenty for us. If they are smaller I'd have 3.
4 sounds like too many, not even my DH eats 4.

DS1 would order bangers and mash while eating out, and wouldn't be disappointed to receive 3 - but we would normally order sides to share (cheesy garlic bread, halloumi fries maybe) and have dessert as well. We don't eat out very often so it would be a treat.

@sadpapercourtesan

The 4 I think has evolved because we buy packets of 12 sausages and I don't eat them. If I opened a pack of 16 instead and cooked them all, they would fall on the spare sausages like starving wolves Grin

this puzzles me. surely you can keep things, they won't melt.
when i was young we didn't have a fridge, most people didn't, but even then we would not use up a whole packet in one go, unless it was high summer.
and we were 5. i was little, plus 2 big boys.
do you think this diet is healthy as a regular event.
i think we all need to cut down on processed meat.
what about adding some meatless meatballs, ie falafel, and cut down to 2 sausages each. also more vegetables.
gradually change the proportions. all the best.

If I didn't think the whole packet would be eaten and enjoyed, I would of course just freeze some - but they are. I wouldn't substitute some of the sausages for falafels or another veggie option, because 1) that would be horrible with mash and gravy, and 2) I have hungry, healthy non-overweight teenage boys and husband, and I don't believe the sausages are doing them any harm.

I would have 6 tho it does depend on the sausage . I only eat Richmond sausages .

WHO eats Richmond sausages? They're full of paste, cereal, no discernible meat at all. Scraps stripped off the bone by powerwasher.. UGH.

@cuparfull my step dad will only eat Richmond sausages. He's really fussy about meat. Won't touch mince at all. Chicken has to be 100% breast, not reformed/added water etc etc.
And yet the only sausages he likes are Richmond Confused

2 veggie sausages
I would have a huge pile of mashed potato swimming with melted butter and possibly some kind of oniony gravy. Mashed tats are one of my weaknesses. Hence no more than 2 sausages.
I’m hungry now !

i just worry that by serving this kind and quantity of food often, your sons may carry on this kind of diet into their adult lives, and there is a definite risk associated with it, serious risk.

I like cabbage with sausage and mash. Cook it with onion and a stock cube. But I like mostly veg so would have one sausage, mash, peas and cabbage with mushroom gravy. Fella would have same but with two sausages and veg with a little mash because he is not a spud lover.

Richmond make vegan sausages, they’re the best I’ve tried 🤷‍♀️

If you look on most packets of sausages, you'll find that 2 sausages count as 1 portion.

We have 2 each.
