How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

We have sausage mash and beans. It depends on what else we have had that day. Ds will have 2. I'll have 2 and dh will have 3.
There's 8 per pack though and it seems silly keeping 1 so we cook them all and ds may have a little bit more and so will dh.
If we haven't eaten anything else (which dh and I usually only eat once a day in the evening) I'll have 3 and dh will have 4, so we open another pack anyway.

My one and 3 year old eat 2 each,( neither eat much carbs though, just sausage and beans and ignore whatever form of potato i try!) I would probably eat 3, my OH easily 4.

16 sausages eaten tonight between four people - two adults, two children. With mash, veg, onion gravy. I am obviously not a proper MNer as nobody shared a sausage and everyone ate to their appetite.

They were bloody lovely.

@StealthRoast

Lol at the pp on page 2 who said their husband would struggle to eat 3 sausages!

DD (10) and I don’t eat meat but dp and ds ( almost 18 ) do. They have big appetites and would usually have 6 each. I only buy good ones. They would usually have them in a sausage casserole though. 2 sausages would be gone in 2 minutes.

My husband would struggle to eat 3 sausages; he’s not a small bloke but doesn’t eat huge portions (for example, he only had 2 medium sized roast potatoes today)

Sausage balls sound neither appertising nor a complement.

I'm actually walking like this to avoid wearing holes on the legs at the top of my jeans.

i'd made the sausages into meatballs and completely miss the point of the thread

I don't really know where I fit in on this thread because I rarely eat sausages, when I do I eat the recommended serving size - yet I'm overweight.

Does your username offer a hint....? 😂

Definitely, I'd much rather have a big mac than sausages!

No. Some posters are telling people who eat 4 sausages they're a drain on the NHS, some are telling overweight people they're a drain on the NHS. I fit into one category and not the other. However I'm not a drain on the NHS because I used it when I was born and when I was 7 and not since. Therefore, as I said, I'm not sure where I fit in on this thread.

Adult DS has just eaten 4 on a half baguette for lunch as they would otherwise have been out of date - he was doing us a favour and not wasting food really.

@LowlandLucky

I would eat 2, DH is a builder and our 4 sons all have heavy manual jobs so they would happily eat half a dozen each but only get 4 each. The would have fruit crumble and custard afterwards. Come supper they would eat 3 0r 4 slices of cheese and toast and a pint of milk.

Manual jobs AND 4 sausages each? So they're a double strain on the NHS. I hope they don't do sport as well or they're a triple threat and basically causing the collapse of the NHS and possibly society as a whole.

Three each. I could probably survive on two but I'm a bit greedy; DH definitely needs three!

@Housewife2010

So do you all open two or more packets if sausages per family meal?

I do sometimes if I want some for later or the dogs are going to have a couple.

2 adults, no kids.

May as well go the whole hog and squeeze them out of their casings and make double the amount of smaller sausages (3/4's to go in the freezer for later though) 🙄

Me too. Putting half a sausage on an adult's plate feels very 'it's 1944 we've got to stretch bad boys as far as we can'.

I'd feel like there was something wrong with me if I cut sausages up to put half of one on an adults plate.

@cautiouscovidity

6 sausages per person! I'm beginning to see why we have an obesity crisis.

2 x Tesco finest sausages = 330kcal

6 x Tesco finest sausages = 990kcal

By the time you add some chips / mash and perhaps some beans or veg, that's well over 1000kcal - a heck of a lot of calories for one meal (excl. pudding) Confused.

I agree, 5/6 sausages each is just crazy.

What do people do if they go to the chip shop for sausage and chips? We only ever order one small sausage with chips 🤔.

My kids will only eat Richmond sausages, luckily they now do a lack of 4 so they have 2 each (with mash and veg) and I don’t feel the need to eat any that are left, I tend to eat the low fat ‘Heck’ sausages but never have more than 2. I’m shocked at the amount some people eat, when your stomach is technically the size of your fist and I see photos of what people put on their plates (on Fb).

Does everyone open two or more packets of sausages for a family meal? We have the good quality chunky ones from Waitrose or M&S. I am the infamous poster who opens one pack for four of us, so we have 1.5 each. If there were 8 in a pack we'd all be happy to have two. We have them as part of a meal. We tend to have them in a sausage casserole (Delia's Sausage, apple & cider casserole is a favourite) so with vegetables, often pancetta and always lots of mashed potato. I'm very greedy but 1.5 thick good quality sausages as part as a meal doesn't seem like a hardship.

Don't have teenage sons but DH would happily eat 6+ proper butchers sausages. He's a bottomless pit.

Oh I love these threads!
I’d have 2
Teenage son 3-4 (he once ate 12 at a bbq which makes me feel queasy)
Partner 4-6 depending how many are in the pack
5 yo 1 or 2
2 yo 1
Teenage daughter 3 veggie ones
