We always have mushrooms and chips.
But I'd like to do something fancy because life sucks.

What's a couple of good sides?

Spinach with loads of butter, parmentier potatoes and bearnaise sauce. In fact, now you mention it

TheresNothingIWantMore · 06/02/2021 12:31

I'd stick with the mushroom and chips, but maybe add a sauce if you want to do something a bit different - peppercorn or diane or something

RoseDog · 06/02/2021 12:31

Dauphinois and battered onion rings out the freezer

Atalune · 06/02/2021 12:32

Dauphinois potatoes
Green beans

Skinny fries
Green salad
Garlic butter

Sliced steak in strips after cooking and served into a green Thai salad with broccoli spears

Atalune · 06/02/2021 12:33

My preferred sauce is a Madera and tarragon one 😋😋

FixTheBone · 06/02/2021 12:33

+1 for the parmentier potatoes.

I also really like a rocket and Parmesan salad on the side

Earlybirdmissedtheworm · 06/02/2021 12:33

Home made, fried onion rings 😍🤤

LadyCatStark · 06/02/2021 12:34

New potatoes with loads of butter and salt, asparagus and peppercorn sauce.

PawPawNoodle · 06/02/2021 12:34

I like it with mash (my favourite of the potato varieties) and tenderstem broccoli with peppercorn sauce.

Dementedswan · 06/02/2021 12:35

Dauphiniois potatoes and asparagus spears

SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/02/2021 12:35

Roquefort cheese tastes AMAZING on top of a rare steak.

Frouby · 06/02/2021 12:36

We've started doing one of those trays of Mediterranean veg with ours, with prepacked sliced potatoes, like chips but round. With peppercorn sauce. It's lush and I think the veg cuts through the richness of the steak.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/02/2021 12:37

Cheesy mash, onion rings and a grilled tomato.

I'm a philistine.

chocolateoranges33 · 06/02/2021 12:37

Daulphinois potatoes, asparagus, cooked large tomato sliced in half with peppercorn sauce.

WingBingo · 06/02/2021 12:37

Another vote for rocket and Parmesan salad, I add balsamic reduction and a good olive oil.

Served with truffle & Parmesan fries. Here is last nights platter!

Chips, peas and pepper sauce.
Anything else is just wrong.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 06/02/2021 12:38

This chimichuri recipe is wonderful with steak.

cafedelites.com/authentic-chimichurri-uruguay-argentina/

Usually make that and have it with green beans.

amusedbush · 06/02/2021 12:42

Another vote for dauphinois potatoes, and I like buttered spinach.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 06/02/2021 12:46

I'm all for simple with steak and what you already do is perfect.

Some ideas below to mix things up:

Mushrooms are so good with steak. Make them fancier by removing stalks, chop them up, mix with Boursin, spoon into the mushrooms and top with breadcrumbs and bake.

Deglaze pan with red wine while steak is resting and let it bubble up to make a quick jus.

A friend used to make a lovely steak dish - steak was topped with a thin slice of Stilton cheese which was then melted, and she added cranberry sauce to the jus. I thought it sounded weird but it worked

Slice tomatoes around the middle, sprinkle with dried mixed herbs and season with S&P and bake.

Slice potatoes, parboil, spread on a baking sheet, sprinkle with a mix of finely grated cheddar/similar and bake.

GiveMyRegardsToYourLizard · 06/02/2021 12:47

These ideas are brilliant.
That's exactly what I needed thank you!

homemade onion rings...cut pretty thin, put in a tupperware, cover with milk and zap them for a couple of minutes, hoik them out nad into some well seasoned flour (S&P, smoked paprika or cayenne if you like it hotter!) Sprinkle them into an inch or so of hot oil...pretty much pick the first ones out as you put in the last ones

bearnaise... or hollandaise, I can never remember which is which, but don't bother if you don't use butter!

if you cba with that then once the steaks are out of the pan resting, put a generous amount of double cream into the still hot pan, a squeeze of lemon juice and a dod of mustard, give it a good stir and a shake of worcestershire.

dh really likes chips, but I prefer parmentier type or dauphinoise

buttery mushrooms, salad and again...this is dh...marrowfat tinned peas. :o

Marmite27 · 06/02/2021 12:48

I usually have a loaded jacket (just 3 cheese and onion deli filler) DH has jacket wedges.

Then caramelised red onions, and tenderstem broccoli and green beans with garlic butter.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 06/02/2021 12:49

Another dauphinois fan and a good ratatouille also.

Exhausteddog · 06/02/2021 12:49

Peas (although not remotely fancy or posh)
Chips (as above)
A sauce with mushroom and cream/creme fraiche (that's about as fancy as it goes here)

I do like dauphinoise potatoes but somehow I want something plainer like chips or jacket potato with steak.

dancemom · 06/02/2021 12:49

Steak baguettes with salad, wedges and coleslaw
