The deep end of the ocean
The good son
My girl
Stand by me
Pay it forward

They are not high budget movies, but they have powerful messages and deserve more acknowledgement

ILoveMyBernina · 06/02/2021 23:06

Sophie's Choice

The heart is deciteful above all things - I was a child when I watched this and it scarred me for life.

The pianist - the very beginning where the boy gets dragged through the hole in the wall terrified me!

The girl next door - Horrifying!

After reading this thread I decided to watch Midsommer last night. I was left thinking what the fuck did I just watch Grin

Films that stayed with me are usually things from my youth although some older ones :

Most Disney films (especially Black Beauty, Lion king, Bambi)
Coco
Bus179 (no one knows this film which is so frustrating cos I want to talk about it to people! I watched it with friends just before a night out and we were all so taken by it that in the pub after we just sat there in silence nursing our drinks lol!. It's a bit of a real life City of God)
Dead Man Walking
Not without my daughter
Blackfish
Grizzly Man
Watership down
Lord of the flies
Animal Farm (the cartoon!)
Philadelphia
Color Purple
Beaches

*Sleeping Beauty I mean not Black Beauty! The dragon witch thing at the end really scared and stayed with me as a kid

Also was quite affected as a kid for years by Never Ending Story (particularly the horse scene) and The Dark Crystal

Sophie's Choice
Yes! One scene has haunted me ever since.

Au Revoir Les Enfants. We studied Louis Malle film in French.
Welcome to Sarajevo, I was working in a cinema at the time so got to see it a million times,
Million Dollar Baby
And....as a bit of fluffiness Slipper and the Rose which when a child was pretty magical but now... just find it so cheesy it's rather amusing.

These have all been mentioned already, but:

Manchester by the Sea
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The Revenant - I’ve seen it get slated on MN, however I loved it, then I love anything with Leo DiCaprio.
Wolf Creek/Eden Lake - couldn’t finish either of these, too horrific.

Tambourina · 08/02/2021 08:53

Pinocchio

Traumatized me as a child. I refuse to let my DCs watch it!

@Codswallop20

I made DD 14 watch the pianist this week, we counted it as school time because the kids cannot possibly compute what happened through textbook learning.

And the insidious nature of what happened to me Jewish people during the rise of the Nazi bastards chills me to the core, how easy people are to manipulate. Awful.

To whoever mentioned the butterfly effect- hear ye! That one has stayed with me and really makes me consider the impact of my actions in daily life.

The Butterfly Effect is a great movie. It does indeed. We all need to sit down and think on our own actions towards others. None of us is perfect but saying sorry and looking at what we have done will help.

I don't recall The Pianist- did your daughter enjoy it?
