@ReggieKrait

My god after reading WNTTAK I didn’t think I could ever have kids in case they were born evil. The book and the film are just so bleak and desperate, both upset me for a while afterwards.

Pixar’s Coco is on a lot in our house atm as my daughter loves the songs. The message about life after death is way over her head, but I’ve been mulling over it for weeks. It’s a beautiful film.

"Coco" is quite possibly my favorite film.

All four of my grandparents were Mexican-born, as was my father and my mother is a first-generation American.

It completely warms my heart to learn that this story resonated with people from all over the world, such as yourself and daughter.

It is a beautiful representation of my culture. My father was a professional mariachi singer/performer/owner of his own group for 60 of his 75 years. So the particular story touched me deeply. I do indeed have a shrine in my house for all of my grandparents, my aunts, uncles, cousins and both my parents, especially during "El Dia de Los Muertos" celebration.

I can't watch the film without crying for a good ten minutes. It is a story that is wonderfully told.

tabulahrasa · 02/02/2021 01:54

“Rabbit Proof Fence...based on a true story. I cried and cried and cried.”

That was going to be the one I added...

onitlikeacarbonnet · 02/02/2021 01:57

In the mood for love. Beautiful.

AI. I was distraught. Couldn’t stop crying. I was still sobbing in the pub afterwards.

Requiem for a dream. Harrowing.

Event horizon is the scariest thing I’ve ever seen. And I watched a lot of scary films. Now I have children, I will never watch it again.

Spirited away. Just a stunning piece of filmmaking.

onitlikeacarbonnet · 02/02/2021 02:00

And Toy Story 2 (Jessie’s story) and 3 (Andy playing with Bonnie before going off to college).

Lostinspace23 · 02/02/2021 02:02

I, Daniel Blake caused me to totally lose it. The grinding hopelessness.

Slumdog Millionaire too. It really makes me cry, despite the feel good aspects of the story.

Lion was another tearjerker.

I will never get over watching Stephen King’s It at a far too young age.

DK123 · 02/02/2021 02:03

Closer
Night of the hunter
Cape Fear
changeling
The others
Shutter island
The road
Chloe
Pan's Labyrinth
The green mile

colouringindoors · 02/02/2021 02:11

A Star is Born - blown away by Lady Gaga's voice and the chemistry between her and Bradley Cooper.

JaneJeffer · 02/02/2021 02:32

God's Own Country. Amazing film.

Furries · 02/02/2021 02:35

It’s a Wonderful Life (as pp have said, didn’t think I’d enjoy a b&q film)
Haachi
Leon
American History X
The Big Blue
Once Were Warriors
Bambi
Hostel
Whistle Down The Wind

And not a film, but a Tom & Jerry episode called ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas. I blooming loved it. Used to be shown every year, loved flicking through the Radio Times to see what day it was on. Haven’t seen it for years. Couldn’t believe when I googled it recently that it was made in 1941!

Furries · 02/02/2021 02:35

*b&w, not b&q 🤣

EugenesAxe · 02/02/2021 02:51

Weird that this thread should come up just when I'm really struggling to get over a film... Jojo Rabbit.

I recorded it for my son after his friend said it was good, but I think the bit after the butterfly will mess him up. I keep having to watch it again as it's so powerful in loads of ways.

Before about age 15 I was quite unaffected by films that I reckon would have stayed with me more had I watched them when I was older; Cry Freedom definitely being one. I agree with loads mentioned, but my list would be:

Dancer in the Dark
Grave of the Fireflies
Amadeus
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Enemy at the Gate
The Wicker Man
Breakfast Club
Little Miss Sunshine
Napoleon Dynamite
The Deerhunter

Some stayed in good ways as well as in huge gulpings of grief or horror kind of ways. I think I have an issue with executions.

DenisetheMenace · 02/02/2021 07:29

Oh and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

ReggieKrait · 02/02/2021 08:15

“MissEverdene

My Girl
I saw this way too young and I was fucking traumatized.”

Those bloody bees! Terrifying. Child me was upset for days.

NorbertMeubles · 02/02/2021 08:37

Bridges of Madison County

Geronimorlassie · 02/02/2021 08:48

The Big Blue

Woke up in middle of night - turned on tv....this was on. Started watching and was just to wait until i could fall asleep again.

Movie is about deep diving - something i have zero interest in. Dolphins - have zero interest in.

But this movie will stay with you. The human interactions. The characters. Its utterly tragic. Just so beautiful.

bebanjo · 02/02/2021 09:23

Thelma and Louise
Oranges and sunshine
House keeping
Sybil

Milomonster · 02/02/2021 09:32

In the mood for love
Manchester by the sea
Lost in translation
Ramchand Pakistani (beautiful independent film).

I tend to watch deeply melancholic movies.

Geronimorlassie · 02/02/2021 09:40

OP

Please continue this thread with movies:

PinkyParrot · 02/02/2021 09:40

Babel - a bit different but I like a good story
Lion - ditto
My favourite is The Revenant . Ditto a good story. The scenery and 'music' is amazing and good acting.
Dances with wolves - again good story, nice music, great scenery.
I liked Miss Potter - gentle story , I suspect I didn't think I'd like it but was pleasantly surprised.

OhToBeASeahorse · 02/02/2021 09:48

I dont know what I find more surprising. The fact that people watch films like this or that obsessively wiki each one. Every bloody time!

JWrecks · 02/02/2021 15:26

Requiem for a Dream
Boys Don't Cry
Irreversible

I absolutely love a disturbing film, but I'll never watch any of those three again.

StormyLovesOdd · 02/02/2021 15:58

The Hunan Centipede - urgh it's a horrible film, i watch lots of horror films but this has stayed with me for years and still gives me occasional nightmares

huggzy · 02/02/2021 16:02

Girl, interrupted.

Emptytank · 02/02/2021 16:03

The entity. Had to turn it off.
