Cry Freedom
Witchboard (I think that was what it was called - horror film with ouija boards -watched in my first term at boarding school and I remember it being utterly terrifying. It might in reality, be the tamest film ever!!)
The Shooting Party
To Kill a Mockingbird

beelzeboob · 01/02/2021 20:15

Scum. Please do not watch this film. I wish I hadn’t.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 01/02/2021 20:17

Dogville - in a bad way. Had to watch Amelie to get the taste out of my mouth.

Room - in a good way (overall). And that's having read the book. Superb bit of film making.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 01/02/2021 20:18

I Am Legend
Last King of Scotland

nonwonderwoman · 01/02/2021 20:19

The blind side. Literally sob through the whole thing and I love a true story.

Hidden figures is also amazing! Plus a true story.

heymammy · 01/02/2021 20:25

Rabbit Proof Fence...based on a true story. I cried and cried and cried.

Lion...also based in a true story. The thought of how confused/scared that wee 5yr old must have been tears me apart 😢

MattyWilbur · 01/02/2021 20:26

Ha, thank you whoever said Event Horizon!

Excellent film, ill dig that out. It was so freaky.

As you can tell I've hit lockdown rock bottom filmwise and need something to shake me out of my slumber so I'll find these.

My friend recommended Watership Down, and I can't cope with that. I can cope with all kinds of terrible but never Watership Down.

Hotel Rwanda

MorvaanReed · 01/02/2021 20:31

A made for TV movie called Profoundly Normal based on the lives of Ricardo and Donna Thornton who had both been institutionalised but eventually won their battle to live independant lives and keep their son. I watched it while suffering from PND - there are very distressing bits that got stuck in my head on replay.

I can't find a good link but their story is well worth a google.

RhubarbTea · 01/02/2021 20:32

The Shape of Water - really grabs you and I so want to watch it again. I am so glad I saw it in the cinema.

Also:

The Shawshank Redemption
Amelie
The Pianist
Call Me By Your Name
Fight Club
The Truman Show

MolyHolyGuacamole · 01/02/2021 20:32

A documentary - Dear Zachary. The synopsis gave me no clue to what happens, even through the movie I didn't realise what was going to happen. It's hard to call it incredible story telling, because it's just so sad.

Iliftmyeyestothehills · 01/02/2021 20:33

Shooting Dogs about the genocide I'm Rwanda. Watched it about 15 years ago and it still haunts me today.
The world did nothing, it didn't even look away or pretend it wasn't happening, just stood and watched what was going on and did absolutely nothing (apart from shoot dogs hence the name).

Iliftmyeyestothehills · 01/02/2021 20:34

Shooting Dogs was so much more shocking than Hotel Rwanda.

PatsyJStone · 01/02/2021 20:35

American Beauty
American History X
Mississippi Burning
Deliverance
The Deer Hunter

Teardrop2021 · 01/02/2021 20:36

The boy in the striped pyjamas
The book thief
Schindlers list
The Notebook
The awakenings with Robert dinero and Robin Williams
What dreams why come ( another Robin Williams money)

MolyHolyGuacamole · 01/02/2021 20:39

The Last King of Scotland. What they did to Amin's wife Confused

MattyWilbur · 01/02/2021 20:39

@BlodwynBludd

Kids
Excellent choice. I'll watch that this week.

I remember being a combination of traumatised and riveted watching that as a teen.

Eden and gardens of the night about child abduction and trafficking. Just horrible and chilling how life can change.

Time40 · 01/02/2021 20:39

Aniara. Swedish science-fiction about a mission to Mars gone wrong. Absolutely compelling, very bleak, and will haunt me forever - the most brilliant film I've seen in years.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 01/02/2021 20:40

The Neverending Story. Watched as a child, have still never recovered from Artex's death.

Absolutely this. It's been years now since I watched it and I still think of it so often, more than anything else I've ever seen. The resilience and heart of Andrew Bagby's parents shone out through all of the awful things that happened.

Also, in terms of films, Irreversible. For some reason I watched it twice. I wish I could erase it from my brain.

Absy · 01/02/2021 20:46

Mustang - story about five sisters in Turkey. It’s such a beautiful movie but also really makes you think.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/02/2021 20:52

Brokeback Mountain
Precious

colouringindoors · 01/02/2021 20:53

Arrival.

So, so much more than a science fiction film.
