I'm so glad @EugenesAxe mentioned Dancer in the Dark.

I think I'd agree with most of the above but this one made me all out sob. And I never actually cry at a film.

Interstellar has been mentioned twice. I thought it was utter dross. I couldn't bear it. Funny that.

welliguessitwouldbenice · 02/02/2021 18:44

Schindler’s List. I watched if then rewound the tape and watched it again. Also planet of the apes. The one with Charleton Heston. The closing scene with the decrepit Statue of Liberty jolted me.

garlictwist · 02/02/2021 18:47

The boy in the striped pyjamas.

I remember walking home from the cinema alone (I'd gone to see it by myself) and getting back to an empty house and just needing to talk to someone about it.

In a similar Nazi vein, I watched an old French film as part of my degree called Night and Fog that showed footage from the liberation of the concentration camps. I was about 18 and had never really thought about what it all entailed - it just showed piles of bodies, and rooms full of discarded spectacles etc. Truly harrowing.

Bangkok Hilton (was a series, but still)
The Woman In Black (the original)
Raise The Red Lantern
Escape From Sobibor

Whatever Happened To Baby Jane
City of Lost Children
Full Metal Jacket

PetrovYelyenaAndMe · 02/02/2021 19:05

Call Me By Your Name - beautiful and affecting.
Lost in Translation.
Manchester by the Sea - had to sit and compose myself in the cinema at the end before I could get up: the grief!
Etre et Avoir - about a small French school: quiet and lovely.
The Hairdresser’s Husband - about love, sad.
Babette’s Feast - another quiet film about food and senses: loved it.

My husband says I like films where nothing happens Smile

Alonelonelyloner · 02/02/2021 19:46

Oh @PetrovYelyenaAndMe I'm in love with all those films!!!

Bourbonbiccy · 02/02/2021 19:47

Sleepers, it still makes me sad just thinking about it.

LetterFromLorah · 02/02/2021 20:22

A Single Man
Osama
Willow

Fckingfuming · 02/02/2021 21:44

Vivarium. Hits too close to home at the moment, and the kid is seriously creepy.

Hush 2008.

Duel.

Will try and think of more.....

Milomonster · 02/02/2021 22:01

@PetrovYelyenaAndMe good taste in movies! You have to watch In the mood for love.

Shopaholic100 · 02/02/2021 23:18

The pursuit of happiness, had me in tears.

MissClementine · 02/02/2021 23:48

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

JessCat75 · 02/02/2021 23:51

Joker
Atonement

Lampan · 03/02/2021 00:21

Trainspotting 2. There is something so poignant in the sense of wasted years. I saw it and then went again with another friend. We came out of the cinema and just cried.
I, Daniel Blake
Million Dollar Baby - ages since I saw it but I remember it affected me at the time

Codswallop20 · 03/02/2021 00:28

I made DD 14 watch the pianist this week, we counted it as school time because the kids cannot possibly compute what happened through textbook learning.

And the insidious nature of what happened to me Jewish people during the rise of the Nazi bastards chills me to the core, how easy people are to manipulate. Awful.

To whoever mentioned the butterfly effect- hear ye! That one has stayed with me and really makes me consider the impact of my actions in daily life.

NotMyPremium · 03/02/2021 00:58

The Whistleblower. DP covered my eyes for one scene but hearing it was almost just as bad.

Scum
American History X

All for the same reasons actually.

AutumnColours9 · 03/02/2021 01:05

Pans labyrinth
Bad boy bubby
Se7en

Fluffmonkey82 · 03/02/2021 01:05

Wolf Creek. Have still never been able to watch this till the end..

crystalize · 03/02/2021 01:11

Into the Wild. Remember talking to a woman in the loo after at the cinema, were both emotional and ended up hugging each other goodbye!

Wolf Creek. Went spur of the moment one afternoon by myself. Great, I thought, about backpackers gone missing in Australia.... My god!!! I was heavily pregnant at the time - was having multiple braxton hicks watching that!

Moulin Rouge. Had just split with someone when I saw it. Sobbed my heart out. There was a guy a few rows down doing the same!

crystalize · 03/02/2021 01:13

@fluffmonkey82 Dont know how I managed to get to the end. Was hardly anyone in cinema as well!

battyberyl · 03/02/2021 01:22
