Spend £100,000 in 24 hours

So my husband has been watching these YouTube videos where they basically give someone a huge sum of money and a limited time to spend it. It’s made me realise how unimaginative I must be because I think I’d actually really struggle.

So, tell me - if you had £100k to spend in 24 hours, what would you do?

Let’s say the rules are that every transaction has to be complete within the time period (so that rules out things like house purchases), you can’t buy anything online, or put any into savings, and if you don’t spend it all within the time you lose everything. Your starting point is wherever you are now so you’ll need to factor in travel time.

I'd go to nearest posh town. Buy a car, furniture, art, some clothes and a shed for the garden!

LadyCatStark · 30/01/2021 10:03

But... there’s no shop to go to... I’d be hard pressed to spend all that in the supermarket! Can I buy a new kitchen and bathrooms? What about a car on click and collect?

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 10:04

Oh yeah - let’s say we’re not in lockdown!

Are the shops open or are we still in lockdown?

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 10:04

Covid doesn’t exist in this fantasy

I can be in Edinburgh in 30 minutes.

Shopping - I’d probably go to Harvey Nicks and buy a designer watch and handbag. Then buy a stack of makeup and perfume or aftershave, some as gifts.

Then I’d buy a new car for DH and myself. A couple of new BMWs would be a big chunk of the £100K. Easily close to all of it.

If rules allowed and I can go to a travel agent and book and pay in full for a family holiday, I’d do that with the rest. First class flights to America, 5 star hotels and theme park tickets in Florida. That can easily be £20k if you just go all out.

Good question!

DuzzyFuck · 30/01/2021 10:07

Is it boring to say I'd pay it off my mortgage?

If that's no allowed and the pandemic didn't exist then I'd go to the travel agent first and book a years worth of holidays, then the car showroom, then with whatever I had left I'd prance to Mulberry and upgrade my handbag collection.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/01/2021 10:07

We are moving house shortly. So furniture. Hot tub. Garden furniture. (Delivery truck on standby for loading!)
Trip to the Lego shop. (I'm presuming we aren't in lockdown in this fantasy?). Just one of everything.
DH could do with a small car.
Bike shed.
Jewellery. Small and transportable but expensive.. book an appointment for 4pm

WingBingo · 30/01/2021 10:08

Ooh I would go to a high end kitchen and bathroom showroom and buy both plus pay for fitting. Then a few doors down there is a car showroom. I’d buy 2 cars, one for me and a 4x4 for MIL.

Alternatively if the transaction could be completed in a day, I would visit the bank and pay it towards my mortgage.

TheRealMrsJamieFraser · 30/01/2021 10:08

I'd find that incredibly easy Blush
As a house is out of the equation ....

5 x new cars(me, dh and 3 young adult dc's)
Any left over for new wardrobes for me and dh.
I have an unfulfilled love for expensive handbags so that will help too!

The depressing thing is that £100k is not nearly as much in real terms as I think it is.

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 10:09

I’d say holidays are allowed provided you can do the whole booking process within the time.

@DuzzyFuck - sorry, I’m going to disallow mortgage payments, too close to savings in my mind. Please spend it on something more frivolous

Fancy horse box.

I've worked in travel all my life, I could do it in a heartbeat. Just show me the money GrinGrinGrin
TeenPlusTwenties · 30/01/2021 10:10

A new car.

Theatre tickets to see HP best seats when they re-open (is that allowed) with hotel stay and nice meal between shows.

Some new clothes & shoes that the wardrobe fairy will miraculously buy for me.

I'm probably only 1/4 of the way there.

lancashirelady · 30/01/2021 10:11

Donate the lot to medicine sans frontiers.

WingBingo · 30/01/2021 10:12

I just asked DH and he immediately said jewellery.

CormoranStrike · 30/01/2021 10:12

I’d buy an extension from a builder!

If that was not allowed, I’d visit a quilting shop and buy a year’s supply of fabrics, wadding and thread and a long arm quilting machine.
I’d also buy one of those big lox cabin offices for my garden and turn it into a craft studio

NiceTwin · 30/01/2021 10:15

Easy for me:
£13k - roof
£7k - remaining plastering and making house watertight.
£20k - kitchen
£10k - carpets and furniture.
£5k each to the kids
£40k to dh to buy an electric car.

LadyCatStark · 30/01/2021 10:15

Oh OK that’s easy then; Audi Q5, new dirt bikes for DH and DS, a top of the range BMX for DS, a pair of Vans shoes in every colour for me and DS, a set of gym equipment, new MacBooks and iPad Pros for all of us (we don’t really need the iPads and MacBooks/ phones but it’ll get me closer to the £100k).

Mosaic123 · 30/01/2021 10:15

A John Lewis voucher. It would be a big one and not have a date on it. Then with it id buy furniture, have curtains made and summer jewellery. Easy and it gives me time.

PhilCornwall1 · 30/01/2021 10:16

So, tell me - if you had £100k to spend in 24 hours, what would you do?

Easy and it would takes less than 24 hours. I'd pop out and buy a car, job done.

Or if not a car, a garden shed, judging on the bloody house prices around here!!

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 30/01/2021 10:17

A suite at Claridges

  1. Handbags
  2. Clothes
  3. Trainers
  4. 3 x Cars
  5. A shit load of stuff on my face
  6. Artwork (I know what I want and where they are)
  7. Some necklaces and a couple of rings

Soooo easy!

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 30/01/2021 10:17

I would buy a house with it

CovidCakeConundrum · 30/01/2021 10:18

Vernon kay used to have a TV show where this was the prize at the end. I think it was called boys and girls. It was fun!
