Spend £100,000 in 24 hours

So my husband has been watching these YouTube videos where they basically give someone a huge sum of money and a limited time to spend it. It’s made me realise how unimaginative I must be because I think I’d actually really struggle.

So, tell me - if you had £100k to spend in 24 hours, what would you do?

Let’s say the rules are that every transaction has to be complete within the time period (so that rules out things like house purchases), you can’t buy anything online, or put any into savings, and if you don’t spend it all within the time you lose everything. Your starting point is wherever you are now so you’ll need to factor in travel time.

Pay off max yearly amount of mortgage (18000)
Pay off dh car loan (10000)
Pay for new carpets and tiling (2000?)
Buy new car (30000?)
Buy new tv/sound system/ washing machine etc (about 5000)
Book a big holiday (up to 10000)
Book some stay cations and weekend get aways (5000)
Book and pay a cleaner in advance
Hire a chef for some fancy date nights at home
Splash out on some ridiculously expensive toys for ds (and probably for a few years worth of Xmas)

Am I allowed to buy for.others? If so buy my sister a car.

SingleHandSue · 30/01/2021 13:45

We live in a good place to make loads of purchases possible.

We have 6 car dealerships within 5 mins from our house so one of those would be that first stop. A car each for DH, me and 19yo DS.

Then just around the corner is a Dreams bed place so maybe get us all lovely new beds and mattresses. Dunelm is next to it so I’ll grab some nice new home stuff.

Then about 10 mins away is a huge caravan and leisure park. We’d buy a static caravan and however many years worth of ground rent/fees to have it at a lovely park at the coast.

Possibly not much left after that but if there was we’d head to town to buy some clothes and other nice bits.

Tiquismiquis · 30/01/2021 13:50

It would be so easy- head to Bond Street and buy some ridiculous jewellery and nice clothes then a car and a few luxury holidays. If I was being sensible then paying off mortgage but that doesn’t seem in the spirit!

Assuming sensible and philanthropic purchases not allowed, it could be fun to 'play rich' for the day. Buy some lovely clothes, go to an antique or art auction and buy something I loved just because I could, go out for the most wonderful dinner and stay in an upmarket hotel.

That could feel wonderful, indulgent and fun, or it could leave me feeling very hollow the next day.

TheSunIsStillShining · 30/01/2021 14:00

BMW series 5 M version. brand new. There goes 85k.
rest: boardgames, books, yarn. and cheap furniture to store them in. :)

LetMeBubble · 30/01/2021 14:01

I’d buy a caravan for local holidays
Expensive furniture for the house
Upgrade my clothes - all of them
A car
A horse and pay upfront for its upkeep

I think that should be it lol. Probably exceeded

icytravels · 30/01/2021 14:04

I'd be on an aeroplane before the day was up and wouldn't come back until I'd been everywhere I wanted to go.

DoubleHelix79 · 30/01/2021 14:06

We bought a listed house a year ago that is still waiting to be furnished appropriately. Previously lived In a small flat furnished almost entirely with flatpack furniture. So I'd leg it over to London to buy a large vanload of antique and really nice new furniture, and perhaps some interesting art. Don't think I'd struggle to spend it all.

thetinselbadge · 30/01/2021 14:08

Easy.

Couple of new cars. Some nice jewelry. Couple of nice handbags. New iPhone, iPad, etc. Probably would run out of money to be honest.

LucasLeesEyebrows · 30/01/2021 14:13

I suppose it depends where you live. I can be in Central London in 20 minutes, so could easily knock that out in 24 hours. Liberty, Selfridges, Bond Street. A car. Art galleries in Mayfair. Yep - I’d have a fair crack Grin

Nymerialuna · 30/01/2021 14:17

Car for Dh and myself
New furnture throughout
New carpets
New / upgraded electronics (TV, tablet etc)
Loads of craft stuff
Clothes
A couple of pairs of designers shoes and bags
Christmas and birthday presents for the next couple of years
Stock up on toiletries and non perishables
Vouchers (unless they are classed as an investment)

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 14:22

@TheSunIsStillShining I love that you’re buying an £85k BMW and some yarn on the same day. Keeping it real.

Can we order stuff? I'd want to go to a really good architect/building firm to get our kitchen and back room knocked together and a conservatory added. I think that would take up a very big chunk of the money, especially if I include new furniture and flooring for the new rooms.

And I'm reminded by the yarn reference - I want to fit out our spare room as a library/snug, so I'm buying bookshelves and shelves where I can organise all my yarn properly. Plus maybe a very indulgent visit to a couple of yarn shops if there's anything left over.

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 14:56

@Arobase - go on then, I’ll let you have it if you can get it all ordered and paid for in the 1 day

Arobase · 30/01/2021 15:00

Well, I'm hoping that my open cheque book and anxiety to pay up front will make the builders/architects VERY co-operative.

Thesagacontinues · 30/01/2021 15:10

70k would be to buy the more expensive windows that we cant afford for our new house. I'd drive to the show room to hand over the 70k to get it done in time.

With that out of the way Id spend the rest on a car. Just about to sign the finance forms for one this week so would just pay up front instead.

FrenchFancie · 30/01/2021 15:25

I might struggle a bit with this but, new cars. Ponies / horses for us if we could get vet checking done in time. A horse lorry! New tack. New rugs etc. Basically go nuts in an equestrian supplier!
Clothes - decent outdoors gear that would last and keep us all warm.
I’ve probably spent it all by now, haven’t I?

FlyingByTheSeatof · 30/01/2021 15:30

Buy a flat or house anywhere and rent it out

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 30/01/2021 16:41

Can I buy stuff that gets delivered/assembled later? Would love a swank summerhouse for the garden and a hot tub.

I've always wanted a beach hut. Not sure if that fits within the rules.

Other than that, am struggling. One thing pandemic has taught me is that 'stuff' is not as wonderful as all that.

Maybe lots of beautiful wood furniture - Ercol and the like. Especially new dining table as mine is 30 years old and totally knackered.

Also a steam cleaner.

A 'going out out' winter coat in wool or velvet in a beautiful colour (as opposed to my cupboard full of dog walking anoraks and puffas.)

New bedding - Egyptian cotton, high thread count

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 30/01/2021 16:43

God, reading other people's things, I can see how dull and unimaginative my vision really is... jeez this pandemic has warped my usual flippant extravagant valuesConfused

CorianderBee · 30/01/2021 16:45

Walk to Lamborghini London and buy one, flog it when they're gone.

CorianderBee · 30/01/2021 16:47

Or jewellery and a Maldives trip

Arobase · 30/01/2021 18:35

@FlyingByTheSeatof

Buy a flat or house anywhere and rent it out
You've got to complete the transaction within 24 hours - I think that might be quite difficult
AgnesNaismith · 30/01/2021 18:45

Not in lockdown?

Ok

  • Peloton Tread - £2000
  • Whole new workout wardrobe to go with my new tread - £1000
  • Fancy decking for the garden - £6000
  • I’d buy a couple of paintings I love - £4000
  • Have a replica of the Romeo and Juliet neon sign made on wood to hang up - £16000
  • Grab a quick car, I’ve always fancied a beetle and have never had the chance, so I’ll go for a ‘new’ style black convertible with leather interior - £22000
  • Get to the airport quick and on the way book my favourite theatre production in New York for me and DH (£500) first class tickets for me, DH, DM & 2 DCs, we can use some points so not too expensive - £10000 (DM will babysit the other side) and follow on flights to Disney because I’m a class-less loser
  • Disney would have to be a beautiful villa - £15000
  • park tickets - £4000
  • Whatever is left can go on a trip to the keys

That was much more difficult than I expected.

RavingAnnie · 30/01/2021 18:50

Not being able to buy anything online would make it very difficult in a lockdown.

I haven't left the house for about three weeks and am not going to the shops, even the ones that are open!
