Spend £100,000 in 24 hours

So my husband has been watching these YouTube videos where they basically give someone a huge sum of money and a limited time to spend it. It’s made me realise how unimaginative I must be because I think I’d actually really struggle.

So, tell me - if you had £100k to spend in 24 hours, what would you do?

Let’s say the rules are that every transaction has to be complete within the time period (so that rules out things like house purchases), you can’t buy anything online, or put any into savings, and if you don’t spend it all within the time you lose everything. Your starting point is wherever you are now so you’ll need to factor in travel time.

Oh I forgot I need new fitted carpets. I could easily spend five grand on Westex carpets on floor 3 of John Lewis, but I wouldn’t be able to take them away that day.

Crowsandshivers · 30/01/2021 12:28

Hit the apple shop first and buy new laptops, desktops, ipads etc. Then kit us all out in new wardrobes for winter and summer, go to the travel agent and book at least three holidays and then purchase two new cars. Go into the bank and pay off credit card if they was allowed? Any money left over, I would buy expensive art.

You could always have 10 large gatherings and then turn yourself in. That's spent the lot then

😂😂

Not sure I have enough friends for that though!

@YakkityYakYakYak

I clearly need more expensive taste, don’t know why I’m struggling. My initial thought when DH asked me was that I’d buy another Polo to replace my current one 😂
😆 I know the feeling. I have a little banger that I love, but if I replaced it I'd go for something like a Kia Picanto, and even the top of the range one is "only" £15,795 😂
Ffsffsffsffsffs · 30/01/2021 12:35

Well 100k would more than pay off my mortgage but as its not allowed...

Top of the range fully spec'd restored vw camper for £30k.

New sensible car for me, intensive driving lesson course, insurance and first car for ds.

New bedroom furniture for us all, including fitted wardrobes for my room with a wierd alcove

New windows all round and replace the glass bit of the conservatory plus heating and roof

Massive family holiday including grandparents and cousins etc

Proper useful tech for us all - hate using knackered ancient kit for homeschooling. New smart TV with Netflix and sky prepaid

FinalSongbird · 30/01/2021 12:38

On a car and a horse box.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 30/01/2021 12:39

So it has to be spent in physical shops rather than online, within 24 hours including travel time, and the transaction must be completed within that time (so rules out house or land purchases) 🤔 I’d actually find that quite tricky as I’m not into designer clothes/shoes/handbags/jewellery but could probably just about do it...

A state of the art VW motorhome = £60,000
New car = £16,000
Everything I want from Cotswold Outdoors, so pretty much the whole shop! Eg: GPS unit = £700, boots = £120 (may as well get a couple of pairs, so £240), jacket = £400
Tempur mattress = £800
Go into a travel agent and go nuts = £??? (I have a massive list of places I want to go so it wouldn’t be hard)
The remainder spent on a personal taxi for a few hours taking me to all the shops

Theunamedcat · 30/01/2021 12:40

Jewellery clothing and a car take my kids to smyths toys and we are probably going to go over

Itsjustaride8w737 · 30/01/2021 12:41

New cars for me and dp
Motorbike for dp
New tv couch, bathroom, basically pimp the entire house out.
Book holiday for next year

amusedbush · 30/01/2021 12:41

Get the whole house replastered and decorated (or at least book and pay for it!).
Garden totally ripped out and redone.
New front and back door, new windows.
New car (VW T-Cross, please!)
Chanel handbag.
Desktop Mac.
New wedding rings.
Book a holiday.

I’d say breast lift but I doubt that could be sorted in a day!

Sexnotgender · 30/01/2021 12:42

I can get to Edinburgh or Glasgow in under an hour. High end jewellers, handbags and loads of car dealerships. Would be really easy.

SD1978 · 30/01/2021 12:47

Car, caravan, swimming pool and landscaping (not based in the UK). Jewellery, handbag, entirely new furniture, laundry updated. Done and spent within about 4 hours.......

Smurfymurphy · 30/01/2021 12:54

I am jus back from an hours walk. Cold, crisps and clear. Went by myself and had a good talk to myself about how I would spend £100k and then a Million. Fabulous walk!

Pythonesque · 30/01/2021 12:59

I actually think I could spend it on musical instruments. I could start locally, might need to go to London for some of it but could manage that in the time.

Daughter would love a couple more clarinets (A and a bass), we'd both love a good set of recorders down to at least bass, a decent cello - especially if I could find one by the same maker as my viola and my children's violins to complete the quartet. He stopped making cellos years ago though and I don't even know if there's any in the UK so that would be a long shot in 24 hours! I think I'd run out of 100k before I ran out of purchases actually.

Paying a builder to do the bathrooms and repaint would also be good!

Lovely! DH and I went for a walk not so long ago and started discussing what we would do with a lottery win. Turns out we’re actually quite misaligned and spent the whole walk arguing about it 😂

Buy a car or camper van
book our holiday
prepay for some building work on our house inc a conservatory
some new boots for smart and for dog walking
perfume
a takeaway for all my family
several cases of wine
a delivery of cut logs for the wood burner to last a few years
potting stuff and seeds.

I think that might take care of it 😊

fluffi · 30/01/2021 13:12

I’m in Edinburgh, Hamilton & Inches, posh car garage, night in hotel, dinner at kitchin. Job done.

PlayDohDots · 30/01/2021 13:22

Am I terrible for realising that doesn't actually cover my ideal car Blush The Tesla Model X comes to 120K and that's not even with maximum specs

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 13:25

Okay, after a lot of though, I think this is what I would do with it:

Drive to a dealership and buy a hybrid SUV. Maybe a Volvo, I don’t really know about cars though so would probably let DH decide. Let’s call that £50k

Then I’d go to John Lewis and buy basically all new furniture for the house. I think I’ll budget £30k for that.

Next I’m off to Kuoni to book 2 holidays, one for me and DH to the Maldives and one for all of us to a resort we like in Greece. I’m saying £15k for that.

That leaves me with £5k which I’d use to buy a few wardrobe ‘investment pieces’, stylish coats, handbags, etc.

And I’d try to save enough for an amazing dinner and stay in a fancy hotel that night.

Done!

Secondhand motor home from a dealer, with an extended warranty to cover all mot and servicing costs for the next few years, and ideally a few thousand in fuel vouchers.

A shepherd’s hut type garden room.

And anything left (the motor home I have my eye on is £40k so I’ll say £50K for the extras and £20K for the luxury fittings in my shepherds hut) I’ll use on a family holiday flying business class.

If no assets allowed at the end of it I’ll charter a private flight with friends for an amazing holiday.

purplecorkheart · 30/01/2021 13:39

A friend mine still runs a travel agent so I would get her to book a trip on the Orient Express for my Mom and I.
