Spend £100,000 in 24 hours

So my husband has been watching these YouTube videos where they basically give someone a huge sum of money and a limited time to spend it. It’s made me realise how unimaginative I must be because I think I’d actually really struggle.

So, tell me - if you had £100k to spend in 24 hours, what would you do?

Let’s say the rules are that every transaction has to be complete within the time period (so that rules out things like house purchases), you can’t buy anything online, or put any into savings, and if you don’t spend it all within the time you lose everything. Your starting point is wherever you are now so you’ll need to factor in travel time.

Oh ok. So not in lockdown!!

RavingAnnie · 30/01/2021 18:55

I'd buy a VW camper. One of the new ones with all the bells and whistles. Think that's about £60/70k ish gone.

Then I'd get a new electric car of some sort.

That'd be it I think.

TheGonnagle · 30/01/2021 18:59

If I can book a holiday then easy peasy. Half to charity, half on a ridiculously extravagant jaunt around all the places I miss staying in all the hotels I wish I could afford!

I live 5 mins from a city centre and a car dealership so easy.

£30,000 on a car. Cos why not? (I don’t even drive!)

Then into the City. Some expensive, some not so much.

John Lewis for top of the line of the following:
car seats, iPads, desktop Mac, Mac Air Books, iPhones, Apple Watches, Beatz, TV or two, Xbox or PS, whichever are in stock. Desks for my older DC and nice desk chairs for all of us. New bedroom furniture for my youngest DC. Mattresses, and all the bedding. Make up from Charlotte Tilbury. Would whip round all the departments and drop another few K on clothes/shoes/bags, nice house bits and bobs. Easily.

There are other expensive shops in the shopping centre and close by where I could spend more.

Figgyboa · 30/01/2021 19:05

Easy.....new car, new furniture and jewelry...could easily spend ££££ at Tiffany's!

Tigger001 · 30/01/2021 19:07

New car for myself and my hubby - 85k
Take my BF for an updated car for her. 15k
Done

Carrottop73 · 30/01/2021 19:09

New car (£50k)
Handbags (£10k)
Jewellery (£30k)
Luxury holidays for year (£10k)

Would love that shopping spree

Suzi888 · 30/01/2021 19:10

A Maserati for moi and a car for DH with the change Grin

Puzzledtenant · 30/01/2021 19:13

That sounds amazing - I'd have taxis everywhere for the day so getting into the city wouldn't be an issue, maybe £200ish on taxis all day.

I'd leave DD and DH in the nearest John Lewis for the day with 25k between them and a nice bribe to the assistant that they both need to end up with a full new wardrobe, not just random new techy gadgets (they're both really indecisive so good luck to him/her Grin ).

I'd spend the morning buying a nice nearly new electric car and booking my dream holidays (I'm very decisive so could get it all easily done in the time!), would leave me with about 20k to go.

Would do a posh lunch then head to the supermarket and do several trolley dashes (always wanted to be on supermarket sweep) and leave them there for the food bank. Then with about 10k left I'd be back to John Lewis, pick up DH and DD, buy pressies for the family, some nice chocolates and spend whatever 1000s are left on a very very nice camera for me.

I could do that 100k spend and barely break a sweat, I think I imagine too vividly Wink

Thecazelets · 30/01/2021 19:26

I can't think of anything. Not into cars, clothes or jewellery and feel like I've got more than enough 'stuff'. If not allowed to pay off the mortgage, give it to my dc or donate to charity I'm not at all sure. A few things I'd like to do on the house but they wouldn't meet the 24 hour criteria...

I think it might have to be £100k worth of gold jewellery. Then I can sell it again when I need the cash, as I'd never wear it.

Love51 · 30/01/2021 19:35

Those who want really good cars, beware that servicing them is commensurate with the cost of the car. So only worth buying if you are doing ok financially anyway else as soon as the clutch needs replacing you're done for!

Oversize · 30/01/2021 19:44

No trouble.
There's a place within driving distance where I'd order and spend 35-40k on a year-round garden room. Then off to buy a motorhome with the rest. No sweat.

couchparsnip · 30/01/2021 20:09

Is charity out if the equation?
I would buy good electric cars for me and Dh. Then buy a few grand worth of vouchers for my favourite shops and then walk into a large Oxfam shop or someone like that and buy everything. I would then donate it all back to them and do it again until I've spent all the money.

Ninkanink · 30/01/2021 20:14

Oh i could easily do that.

I’d go to Copenhagen and do some shopping, spending a fair whack at the airport as well.

I’ve probably got about 25k worth of handbags on my wish list atm. 😄 Another 25k for jewellery and clothing, and were halfway there!

I’d also buy a car. And I’d buy each of my daughters something lovely too. And my DH!

Ohh this is a fun game. I might write out an actual list.

HermioneWeasley · 30/01/2021 20:19

I’d book some spectacular holidays, buy a car, some furniture, some art, and some nice jewellery. I could burn through £100k easily. I could probably do £1m in 24 hours without buying property

Susie477 · 30/01/2021 20:21

Too easy.

This rather ostentatious Rolls-Royce Ghost is for sale within 30 minutes drive of my house. Price £100,000.00

Spend £100,000 in 24 hours
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/01/2021 20:22

If I can't pay off the mortgage, then I'll buy two new cars (for myself and DH) and a complete set of Le Creuset pans. I'll spend the rest on treats - computer games, cookbooks and cats 😁

DaisyDreaming · 30/01/2021 20:36

As you can’t complete a house sale in that time I would quickly research what sells second hand for the same value or buy gold or diamonds or something with the boring plan to sell them on after the 24 hours and buy a house! I would leave some over and visit a craft store and some posh deli (maybe Harrods) as well as some kind of huge Christmas store and get loads of decorations. I would also invite a few kids to go toy shopping!

DaisyDreaming · 30/01/2021 20:38

Although I wouldn’t take the kids toy shopping in harrods or hamleys as they could so easily blow the £100k there!

2018SoFarSoGreat · 30/01/2021 21:47

Am I going mad or have some of you spent so much over budget on your list? I love the posts where the prices are listed so I can add them up. Ot am I being a fun sucker?

I've done holidays that are not luxurious at all but spent 10k+ so for more luxury it would need to be about 30k. That's for me, DH, DS and family.

DS needs a new car so 35k. Dealership is five minutes away.

DH new guitar, ordered custom. 12k. It did take a few months to make his last one, so this this may be disqualified.

10k for new furniture for DDs flat. Same for DS. Let them run around picking it!

New dining room chairs for me. 3k.

Done.

This was fun!

Rolle · 30/01/2021 21:56

Been watching too much Below Deck, so I'd charter a mega yacht somewhere exotic, probably only for 1 or 2 nights for that money. And live a temporary life of luxury. Oh, and set up a years worth of cake delivery.

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 23:04

@Rolle that’s a pretty amazing way to spend the money (have been watching below deck too, and would love to have a taste of that lifestyle).

Labobo · 30/01/2021 23:30

3 cars - one each for DC and one for me and DH to replace our old banger.
Nearest department store for some beautiful shoes and boots, a couple of gorgeous coats and some decent luggage for when we are next allowed to travel. If any left over, a few cashmere sweaters.

Like the idea of buying art but would have to work out in advance what I wanted to buy.

RhubarbTea · 30/01/2021 23:48

I'd buy whatever had the best resale value and then sell it all again and buy a house. Because all I want is a house. (Will likely never own one IRL)

Failing that, I'd spend some time researching the best living-in-a-van hippie can and buy that, and then block book a shed ton of driving lessons as I can't drive. Grin The rest I'd spend on clothes for me and DS and all the house crap we'd normally want, then I'd ask friends what they wanted and just buy it for them.

LadyFlumpalot · 31/01/2021 02:39

Nissan GTR and if I had anything left over I'd buy shoes. All the shoes.
