Spend £100,000 in 24 hours

So my husband has been watching these YouTube videos where they basically give someone a huge sum of money and a limited time to spend it. It’s made me realise how unimaginative I must be because I think I’d actually really struggle.

So, tell me - if you had £100k to spend in 24 hours, what would you do?

Let’s say the rules are that every transaction has to be complete within the time period (so that rules out things like house purchases), you can’t buy anything online, or put any into savings, and if you don’t spend it all within the time you lose everything. Your starting point is wherever you are now so you’ll need to factor in travel time.

Good jewellery shop. Spend it all. Return it two days later when the challenge is over and keep the cash :)

WicketWoo · 30/01/2021 10:39

Oh this is a fun game - I would...

  • go to mini and buy my kids an electric mini £20k
  • call Trailfinders and book us an amazing holiday £20k
  • go to JL and buy loads of new furniture £10k
  • go to a high end jewellers and buy each of us a fancy watch £50k

Go to an art gallery and purchase a piece of art
Purchase an expensive watch
Purchase an antique
A cartier emerald green shoulder bag if there was change (I've always wanted one)

I would need to be near a city to do this. I would basically buy inheritance/heirlooms which would increase in value over time.

7.5t horse box.
New jumping saddle
New dressage saddle

If you have a family of 5 you could blow the entire budget flying first class (proper beds) to Sydney with a stop over in Singapor... If its money for nothing and you can afford the rest of the holiday yourself that would be an instant decision nobody in the family would ever forget.

I flew proper first class ling haul once (paid for by the Japanese goverment) and remember the flight vividly although it was well over 20 years ago.

A new car for me, DP and my mum.
New garden furniture
Complete new wardrobes for us all
Book a holiday

doctorhamster · 30/01/2021 10:43

I'd book a couple of holidays, new kitchen, find a landscape gardener to sort my garden out (is that allowed if I pay fully upfront?), a nice piece of jewellery each to give the dc when they are a bit older and any left on furniture or bags.

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 10:44

There’s also a video on the same channel which is to spend $1million in 24 hours. That blows my mind.

I'd be hard pushed too, Op.

Car, art, jewellry.

Horse(s) & kit.

Stuck now!

PhilCornwall1 · 30/01/2021 10:48

All these people saying about holidays, ahhh those were the days!

mrsfeatherbottom · 30/01/2021 10:50

Do any of you remember the film Brewster's Millions with Richard Prior? Very similar concept.

AuntieStella · 30/01/2021 10:50

If not in lockdown, I would still like to make one on-line purchase as there is a charity auction (for an item I don't particularly want, but could find someone to give it to) to benefit a small local charity I'd love to support. So I'd make a big bid on that.

I'd buy myself a posh watch, and a signet ring, and I'd get the remodelling done on a piece of jewellery I've wanted changing for a long time. Louboutin shoes for me and DD (still love the red soles)

Top of the range Garmin

New car - the one I really want, not the sort of one I really choose for family practicality

New furniture for DC's bedrooms, and good watches for each of them.

Onadifferentuniverse · 30/01/2021 10:51

I would buy a nice car, some jewellery, clothes. I’d give some to family and try and buy lots of essentials and bags to give out to the homeless.

TheVolturi · 30/01/2021 10:54

I'd buy the biggest motorhome I could.

Was that the one where he had a deadline to spend something like 30 million in order to inherit even more?
mrsfeatherbottom · 30/01/2021 10:56

Yes @PhilCornwall1 - had to spend $30 million in 30 days but have no assets at the end (and couldn't just give it away). If he succeeded he got $300 million.

DorotheaDiamond · 30/01/2021 11:02

I could easily go to Graff and buy a single coloured diamond and not have change from a million! No idea when I would wear it (or how to insure it) but soooooo pretty!!

Alfiemoon1 · 30/01/2021 11:02

New car for dd dh and ds for when he learns to drive holiday new kitchen bathroom and windows

SanFrancisco49er · 30/01/2021 11:05

A new Land Rover Defender with everything on it for my husband. If any change left, a holiday too!

RestingPandaFace · 30/01/2021 11:07

New car for DH (Tesla) new small car for DM nice watch for myself and DS.

Any left I’d go on a make-up and handbag spree in Selfridges.

HibernatingTill2030 · 30/01/2021 11:09

I'd bu a £100,000 (or close to) car.
After the show, sell it almost new, you'd still make a fair amount and then can put it into savings/mortage/whatever.

Fly to wherever has the best diamond shops. Buy diamond jewellery. Sell later.
PegasusReturns · 30/01/2021 11:11

I could spend that in my favourite jewellers in 20 minutes.

If I had to diversify I’d throw in a car.

Easy Grin

Smurf123 · 30/01/2021 11:18

A car for dh - not too expensive one as although he would use it daily it would be for short journeys
A holiday for dh, ds, me plus dmum dad and 2 dbros to wdw florida at Christmas in a disney hotel walking distance to one of the parks with the dining plan included (my mum's dream!)
Several flights for a year to and from the European country dh is from to visit his parents and brothers
Season pass to legoland billund
A season pass for the local farm
And local soft play providing there's no lockdown..

Depending on money left either A garage conversion to office / games room
Or a 2 storey house extension - we already have approved plans as they were done just before we moved in,

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 30/01/2021 11:18

Having no assets at the end makes it far more interesting as a "game" - buying assets like gold/ diamonds to sell afterwards is obviously the best plan, but a crap concept for a game imo - why would anyone watch that, it would be dull as ditch water.
