Spend £100,000 in 24 hours

So my husband has been watching these YouTube videos where they basically give someone a huge sum of money and a limited time to spend it. It’s made me realise how unimaginative I must be because I think I’d actually really struggle.

So, tell me - if you had £100k to spend in 24 hours, what would you do?

Let’s say the rules are that every transaction has to be complete within the time period (so that rules out things like house purchases), you can’t buy anything online, or put any into savings, and if you don’t spend it all within the time you lose everything. Your starting point is wherever you are now so you’ll need to factor in travel time.

My first thoughts were a) overpay the mortgage and b) buy gold as a good, stable store of wealth, but it sounds like neither would be allowed.

I wouldn't buy a new car because of the depreciation, but we both currently drive old bangers, so I would allocate maybe £8-10k each to me and my husband to buy a newer second-hand car each.

Then I'd go into a travel agent and book an annual holiday for the next 10-15 years - we usually spend £3-5k per holiday so I could sort all my holidays from now until about 2035! I might do a couple of more expensive trips and spread it over fewer years.

Having no assets at the end makes it far more interesting as a "game"

Ah, in that case, go out and have a few "accidents" and pay compensation immediately in cash.

Nothing too bad of course, trip a few people up, step on a few toes.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 30/01/2021 11:29

I don't think its even possible to book holidays for ten years in the future is it stonecold? Flights aren't bookable more than a year in advance (usually less), although packages might be... but costs go up and availability changes... I can't think of anything bookable more than a couple of years in advance.

Go to an auction and buy suits of armour and things like that. It would be fun!

But is anywhere open?

SensibleAlfonso · 30/01/2021 11:36

Holidays, jewellery and paintings. I could easily spend £100,000 or £1,000,000 on those three things in 24 hours.

It's nice to dream...

GoodbyeH · 30/01/2021 11:39

It's easy! Go to the nearest car showroom and hand them the cash and ask for a car at that price! Done!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 30/01/2021 11:39

Wouldn't be enough money for me tbh - the car I want is more than that 😂

wrongleverkronk · 30/01/2021 11:40

5 cuddle beds for my local hospice.
That's it done.

Howmanysleepsnow · 30/01/2021 11:41

Used cars, from private sellers.
Once my 24 hours was over and I got to keep them I could sell them again for a similar price and keep the money for a house!

DrWankincense · 30/01/2021 11:45

Car x 2, not madly high end because I'd also want to buy -
Motorbike
Campervan
Whisky
Wine
Champagne
I'd choose lots of plants and get my garden landscaped and designed and buy posh garden furniture.
I'm trying to avoid house stuff like kitchen etc but I'd do that too!

Batmanandbobbin · 30/01/2021 11:46

I was gonna put Mercedes g-class then I looked how much it was to get new and it was over my £100,000 sooooo a cheaper one? And a decent paint job/valet to make it look new 😂

BlackeyedSusan · 30/01/2021 11:46

Pay decorator to paint all through.
New car for ex
Indoor gym equipment
And a sodding big donation to food bank.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/01/2021 11:46

I'd get a first class ticket down to London, book a suite for the night in the Savoy. Then hit the designer shops, buy a few pricey handbags and coats. Few things for the house. Go to the travel agent and book a few holidays. Posh expensive dinner and treat my friends to a night out buying all the drinks.

DrWankincense · 30/01/2021 11:48

Possibly a small boat Grin.

davidsSchitt · 30/01/2021 11:52

Kitchen
Car
Wardrobes
4 holidays
Books
Couple of iPads
New phone

Can I gamble with it? Fistful of scratchcards and a few bets Grin

mootymoo · 30/01/2021 11:54

New convertible car £60k approx for the showroom model that I covet. Major shopping spree for dp and I - £10k. Laptop (high end) and iPad each £5k. Jewellers next, £5k. Head to the antiques type place, need a standing lamp, paintings for my new house, homeware stores for long list of items from lampshades to towels ... lockdown means we still have bare bulbs. Garden centre, we need tools, top soil, turf (assume it's in season) a tree, bird table and rent a van!

Yep I could spend it but would take me all day and dependent on the car dealership having a car to go that day (know exactly which, it's in the window)

mootymoo · 30/01/2021 11:56

I'm assuming no holiday as it has to be spent that day - would book a world cruise for 2023 otherwise! It's £30k for us both

4Mongrels · 30/01/2021 11:57

A box at Tottenham so I could take my Dad to see them play as often as he wanted. Age and medical condition means he couldn’t just go as a normal spectator.

Estimating that to cost about 80k, so the remainder would be spent on Chanel handbags, 3 definitely, 4 if I’m lucky!

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 12:00

I clearly need more expensive taste, don’t know why I’m struggling. My initial thought when DH asked me was that I’d buy another Polo to replace my current one 😂

NettleTea · 30/01/2021 12:15

new to me reliable economic car
school fees to end of 6th form upfront for my boy
some land/woodland

PhilCornwall1 · 30/01/2021 12:16

You could always have 10 large gatherings and then turn yourself in. That's spent the lot then.

ivykaty44 · 30/01/2021 12:19

Go to the supermarket and starting buying everyone’s shopping 🛍 word would soon get round

DragonPoop · 30/01/2021 12:20

New kitchen
New carpets for whole house
New car (not a super expensive one)
New bed base and mattress (king size)
New tv
New laptop
New phone (x2 for me and dh)
Handbags and clothes
Clothes for DS and dh as well
New sofa
Pay of debt (£5k)
Vouchers with anything left over - that way I don’t have to spend it within the 24 hours lol

Alfaix · 30/01/2021 12:28

Fancy cars
Lots of holiday bookings
