Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit

I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

Mainland europe - musty, overcrowded poverty stricken landscape with very little to offer. No thanks.

Dubai - just a less classy hong kong with shitty rights.

Fastedbrownie · 30/01/2021 09:17

Oh, and New York. Talk about an overrated city.

McCorona · 30/01/2021 09:19

That's quite a sweeping judgement for somewhere with so much history, culture and varied scenery! Confused @Fastedbrownie

NeedWineNow · 30/01/2021 09:22

The Maldives - probably beautiful but I'd go stir crazy. Similarly any other island retreat.

Dubai - as everyone says, tacky in the extreme and I'd be too nervous of putting a foot wrong!

MrsSmith2021 · 30/01/2021 09:22

New York. Literally no desire at all. I love a city break, but really can’t see what NY has to offer. Maybe I’ve seen too much of it in movies.

Hamnet · 30/01/2021 09:22

Wow. Is this a thread to show how many generalisations you can make while also displaying a huge lack of knowledge?

Mainland Europe is an overcrowded poverty stricken landscape? Um, in some urban areas yes. Have you seen the Alps, the fjords of Norway, the forests in Germany, the Dolomites, the medieval hill villages in Tuscany.... how can you paint all of Europe as overcrowded and poverty stricken????

And Thailand, step 5 miles away from the big resorts and it’s nothing like you describe.

Piranesio · 30/01/2021 09:23

Absolutely Dubai here too.
And Thailand, although I loved Malaysia and Indonesia

For me, Turkey is becoming an increasingly unpalatable place to visit, although I have been once and it was perfectly pleasant.

Dashel · 30/01/2021 09:24

You need to watch Karl Pilkingtons Idiot Abroad travel series, so funny and in some cases puts you right off visiting some of the bucket list places

GoodAsMyWord · 30/01/2021 09:24

Iceland

depends where you live now but lots of regions in EU are richer than UK Florida - when people have been fed a diet of Disney movies and assume America is really the pinnacle of culture. Long haul flight to go and eat junk food - consumerist mediocrity Yuk.
SionnachRua · 30/01/2021 09:26

London, just no interest
Dubai, Qatar etc. So tacky.
The USA.
Mauritius etc. Any of these places where the point is to sit in a luxury resort and ignore the poverty outside the walls.
Israel, don't support it.

Chunkymenrock · 30/01/2021 09:26

China-horrific animal cruelty. Anywhere hot with stray dogs and cats around-so heartbreaking.

AnnaMagnani · 30/01/2021 09:27

New Zealand, Dubai, Canada, Australia

Am not outdoorsy or into sunbathing or shopping.

Mainland europe - musty, overcrowded poverty stricken landscape with very little to offer. No thanks

Which bits exactly? Even in Eastern Europe in destination cities it's like any other tourist city in the UK - luxury shops, amazing heritage and food, then travel a bit and see stunning scenery.

You could say the same criticism of some bits of the UK - the bits tourists don't go to.

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 09:27

Agree re the Maldives looks beautiful but dull. Can't be doing with places where there's nothing to do but sunbathe.

Loads of Europe is amazing! Have travelled a fair bit round Europe but there's still lots of places I'd love to visit, particularly in Scandinavia.

Varied scenery is not how I would describe mainland Europe. A very grey continent. I like outskirt Europe-Norway, Iceland, Ireland, ect- but mainland Europe? Sooo many social issues disguised by the leaders jumping up and yelling "look! Over there! A museum and a castle!"
PuppyMonkey · 30/01/2021 09:29

Alton Towers.

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 09:29

Oh gosh yes Florida too. Looks awful. If I won a holiday there in a competition I'd give it away to someone who'd appreciate it. Similarly Las Vegas.

Yes to Dubai and Australia.

I think you’re confusing mainland Europe with a refugee camp. Or perhaps that was your intention. Happily most people will realise what a ridiculous point of view that is.

You might be right on Dubai though.

Mumdiva99 · 30/01/2021 09:32

Disney Land or other florida theme parks. To pay all that money for crowds and queues is my idea of a nightmare. (However we were lucky enough to go to Hong Kong a few years ago and while there took the kids to HK Disney for the day and yes, I enjoyed it... .so maybe it's a case of don't knock it till you try it.....)

Equally I had the same aversion to Las Vegas till I went for a friends wedding. It was a fab destination and I have been back since!

I used to dislike the idea or Dubai but I would love to go now....but I'd be happy with a weekend anywhere at the moment....(except perhaps Pontins. I draw the line there.....)

FancySomeChips · 30/01/2021 09:32

China
New York
Dubai
Turkey

Have turned down opportunities for a free holiday in all of these places.

FancySomeChips · 30/01/2021 09:33

Oh and Vegas.
Hong Kong.

mechanicalwonder · 30/01/2021 09:34

Disney land, disneyworld and euro Disney.

fudgecat · 30/01/2021 09:34

Yes, what an incredibly dipshit thread.
