I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

@borntobequiet

Mainland europe - musty, overcrowded poverty stricken landscape with very little to offer. No thanks.

I think you’re confusing mainland Europe with a refugee camp. Or perhaps that was your intention. Happily most people will realise what a ridiculous point of view that is.

You might be right on Dubai though.

Refugee camp? No. East Africa on the other hand...

All I'm saying is that central Europe isn't as different from Eastern Europe as they try to sell themselves to be. At least Eastern Europe is honest about what you're going to get if you go there. For example, Paris is the worst, most outlawed city I've ever been to in my life. Moscow in comparison was a haven.

And I will stand by every word I've said here.

@MrsSmith2021

New York. Literally no desire at all. I love a city break, but really can’t see what NY has to offer. Maybe I’ve seen too much of it in movies.
How on earth can you love a city break but can't see what NY has to offer? I also love a city break and NY is one of my favourite cities. What is it you love about city breaks?
GintyMcGinty · 30/01/2021 09:38

Oooo a prejudice thread. Great.

HurricaneBitch · 30/01/2021 09:38

Ah the sweeping statements about Florida too, I lived there for 10 years so know it well, so much more to it than Disney and Orlando.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 30/01/2021 09:39

Laughing at everyone getting defensive over the Europe comment. Just add yours and move on! These types of threads always end up being filled with comments taking offence to someone's dislike.

Anyway, back to the point of the OP:

Vegas - those lights! And gambling isn't my thing

Australia - mainly because it's so far away and I hate flying as it is and have no desire to spend hours upon hours getting there. I also HATE heat! I'd visit NZ if I could afford to fly first class, it's much cooler

Dubai - for reasons already stated, mainly human rights issues

I've been to New York twice and agree with PPs, it's shockingly dirty, bags of rubbish just left on the dies of streets outside restaurants, and THE RATS!!! I don't understand the obsession. I preferred it when I went at Christmas though, very festive. But also very cold!

You can't be prejudice against a country. It's not going to get it's knickers in a twist because I called it grey and musty.
CottonSock · 30/01/2021 09:41

There is so much in mainland Europe I don't actually see the point in travelling long haul anymore.

StepOutOfLine · 30/01/2021 09:43

It's not the thread that's dipshit but rather the comments.
I have an ideological no-go list and a not interested in that sort of place list.
China, Israel, Russia, Poland, Hungaryon the first (but it's a moveable feast tbf)
Dubai, Las Vegas, Florida, Australia etc on the second.

I like old, cold places.

tanstaafl · 30/01/2021 09:43

We like road trips ending with a few days in a nice hotel.
Anywhere outside Europe or Canada/USA doesn’t appeal for that sort of holiday.

Oh, and cruises. Never saw the appeal.

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 09:44

People are entitled to have opinions based on the knowledge that's available to them. From what I've seen Dubai looks awful... For me. But for some it's great, they love to shopping malls and consumerism etc.

Equally I enjoyed Paris and New York but can totally appreciate why others didn't, or don't fancy them. It's about being able to appreciate other people's perspective. I have a school friend who loves Disney, she's there (Florida) every year if she can be, it's my idea of hell but I love that fact she loves it and has such a good time there.

Re Paris although there are some elements of it I love it does feel unsafe, same with certain areas of Barcelona again, a city I love. Copenhagen on the other hand felt very safe.

It's not Mainland Europe in and of itself, it's the fictional one they sell you compared to reality. If I wanted a luxary holiday France, Italy, Switzerland etc is not where I'm wanting to go. If they sold themselves honestly, I wouldn't care so much.
Ginfordinner · 30/01/2021 09:46

Mainland europe - musty, overcrowded poverty stricken landscape with very little to offer. No thanks.

Dubai - just a less classy hong kong with shitty rights.

What, all of mainland Europe?

What an ignorant statement Hmm

Rockbird · 30/01/2021 09:46

Easy, anywhere hot or any theme park destination. Other than that I'm open to all ideas.

I'd love to go to Russia and Japan though.

jenthelibrarian · 30/01/2021 09:47

Scotland
The Lake District

Been to both, so I know I needn't go back.
Probably anywhere else that is supposed to be 'scenic'.

I like a loud, busy city with history and culture and people to watch and loads to see and so.

TramaDollface · 30/01/2021 09:48

South Africa
Australia
Dubai
Thailand

Wanna go to
China
India
Japan
Cuba
Morocco
Israel
Mexico
Vietnam

These will be my next holidays once we’re out of pandemic hell

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 09:48

@Rockbird I went to Russia briefly. St Petersburg. It was fascinating and I enjoyed it. Some aspects very strange though!

Agree with you about cruises. Though did a posh Nile cruise 3 years ago and bloody loved it and Cairo...omg...loved it.

South Africa was fantastic for a road trip and amazing hotels.

Councilworker · 30/01/2021 09:52

Hong Kong. It just seems so crowded it makes me feel a bit claustrophobic. It's probably not like that at all but the sheer number of high rises makes me feel like you'd be sort of hemmed in on all sides most of the time. Tokyo is the same in my head too for that "surrounded by buildings' sensation.

MaryIsA · 30/01/2021 09:53

Bonkers thread though I do love reading a good prejudice thread.

Babdoc · 30/01/2021 09:53

I’m autistic, so Vegas or New York would be my idea of hell. Too much noise and neon lights, horrible sensory overload. Can’t stand Disney crap either.

Contrary to the PP who hates the entire continent of Europe, I love it! All of it, from visiting a bear sanctuary in the Carpathian mountains of Romania, to walking in the Black Forest, seeing the ruins of Knossos on Crete, the gorgeous architecture of Prague, floating round Venetian canals on a gondola, attending an opera in the Roman amphitheatre at Verona and the Passion play at Oberammergau, among hundreds of other holiday highlights ... Europe has endless attractions.

MaryIsA · 30/01/2021 09:54

I didn’t get Hong Kong, but was there after a previous visit 25 years ago and couldn’t believe how much it had changed and also spent several days locked in hotel due to a typhoon.

See, St. Petersburg is a great city, and one of the things that made it so great is that it had no airs to it. You go there with zero expectations, and it blows you away. You go to Paris and you're like...this is it? This is the city everybody bangs on about so much. The food is mediocre, the shops sell the same shit they sell at home, the streets smell like sewrage, and my hotel is warning me not to leave after dark or I'll get raped and mugged. Like yes, there's the effile tower and famous paintings, but once you see them then what?

I suspect the Europe hater is a complete cultural Philistine. One of my favourite places in the world is Lake Garda. It is breathtakingly beautiful.
