Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit

I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

Dubai
Vegas
Cruises

ugh....

LApprentiSorcier · 30/01/2021 09:58

I've never had any interest in Disney Resorts/Theme Parks. The Florida Disney park, waterparks and studios package holiday was somewhere many people where I worked used to rave about (pre-Covid). I've never really got it - if you want to go on rides why not just go to a local theme park? If I were to visit Florida I wouldn't waste time in a theme park.

Similarly Paris Disneyland always sounded like a waste of a trip to Paris, but that was never as raved-about as the Florida one by my colleagues.

@MrsSmith2021

New York. Literally no desire at all. I love a city break, but really can’t see what NY has to offer. Maybe I’ve seen too much of it in movies.
I used to think that but ended up going because DP wanted to attend an event there & paid for the flights - I was actually so impressed, so much culture, amazing museums, gorgeous bars & restaurants, I loved it, it was completely different to how I’d imagined
TheDogsMother · 30/01/2021 09:59

All of mainland Europe ??? One homogeneous lump ? They don't 'sell' themselves to me I just go there and explore the beautiful countryside, mountains, rivers, beaches, cities. Also Thailand, just step away from the resorts and its stunning. South Africa and the garden route was one of my best holidays.

Dubai, I went years ago out of curiosity but wouldn't bother again. I don't fancy Florida but in fairness I don't know much about it so shouldn't judge.

After the last year I'd be happy to go on holiday just about anywhere though.

TheDogsMother · 30/01/2021 10:00

Oh and I hate the idea of a cruise.

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 10:01

I reluctantly tried centreparks due to all the raving about them and hated it. Never ever again.

I love Europe but do find the food pretty shit in a lot of places, I'm vegetarian though and the choice is pretty poor. Copenhagen again was the exception, great food there although..£££.

I've been the the lake District many many times and to be honest have gone off it a bit. Probably won't go back for a long while. Crap food there as well.

GintyMcGinty · 30/01/2021 10:02

*@jenthelibrarian Scotland
The Lake District

Been to both, so I know I needn't go back.
Probably anywhere else that is supposed to be 'scenic'.

I like a loud, busy city with history and culture and people to watch and loads to see and so*

Glasgow?
Edinburgh

Both busy cities with 1000 plus years if history, culture, people to watch and loads to see and do.

There is more to Scotland than 'supposed scenery'

Ginfordinner · 30/01/2021 10:02

Now that DD is grown up we avoid anywhere that attracts families with small children. We also dislike crowds and if abroad, anywhere that is too "English".

TravellingSpoon · 30/01/2021 10:02

Dubai
New York
Anywhere where there isn't much to do, like the Seychelles or Maldives.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 30/01/2021 10:02

Cornwall.

Sarcobaleno · 30/01/2021 10:03

Cornwall in the summer. It sounds horrific.

LawnFever · 30/01/2021 10:03

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

I’ve been a few times and parts of the south/islands in Thailand yes, are sadly very over developed and touristy but the north is incredible & beautiful

littlebillie · 30/01/2021 10:04

@NeedWineNow

The Maldives - probably beautiful but I'd go stir crazy. Similarly any other island retreat.

Dubai - as everyone says, tacky in the extreme and I'd be too nervous of putting a foot wrong!

Agree - Maldives maybe for a day or two but I think for a week would drive me crazy

Dubai - never ever

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 10:04

I'm looking forward to a holiday in Scotland once we're allowed. Edinburgh in particular looks like it tics all the boxes for our family, culture, walking, shops, vibrancy.

So you just don't like Paris then @Fastedbrownie Grin

You can't lump the whole of Europe in together when it's so diverse.

Everything you just described about Paris you wouldn't be able to say about Helsinki for example.

LawnFever · 30/01/2021 10:05

Disney in any capacity anywhere, just looks like spending days in a massive queue eating shit burgers with kids crying over something or other

littlebillie · 30/01/2021 10:05

@Fastedbrownie

Mainland europe - musty, overcrowded poverty stricken landscape with very little to offer. No thanks.

Dubai - just a less classy hong kong with shitty rights.

Mainland Europe is wonderful, especially off the beaten track
nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 10:06

Cornwall was/is ok as a family holiday but it is overrated. Been quite a few times now, the coastline is stunning but the countryside in the interior is nothing special.. esp compared to some other parts of the UK. Northumberland has it all!!

All I'm saying is that central Europe isn't as different from Eastern Europe as they try to sell themselves to be. At least Eastern Europe is honest about what you're going to get if you go there. For example, Paris is the worst, most outlawed city I've ever been to in my life. Moscow in comparison was a haven

See, St. Petersburg is a great city, and one of the things that made it so great is that it had no airs to it. You go there with zero expectations, and it blows you away. You go to Paris and you're like...this is it? This is the city everybody bangs on about so much. The food is mediocre, the shops sell the same shit they sell at home, the streets smell like sewrage, and my hotel is warning me not to leave after dark or I'll get raped and mugged. Like yes, there's the effile tower and famous paintings, but once you see them then what?

Ok Vladimir, you’ve made your point.

littlebillie · 30/01/2021 10:10

Australia is a beautiful country and friendly people. So much to see from the rainforests, green pastured wine country to rugged Tasmania. The cities are vibrant foodie places and it's so clean. They respect their beaches and wildlife.

Highly recommend a trip

Insert1x20p · 30/01/2021 10:10

Hong Kong. It just seems so crowded it makes me feel a bit claustrophobic. It's probably not like that at all

It is and it isn't. A lot of it is, but there are also massive, country parks with some very dramatic scenery and some lovely beaches. I have to say I think it's somewhere for an interesting layover rather than a destination in its own right.

FlimFla · 30/01/2021 10:10

Is Paris really that bad now? I've been several times and love it. I'm a Londoner though so used to being streetwise in a city.

StCharlotte · 30/01/2021 10:11

The Disney part of Florida. The Keys sound gorgeous.

Dubai.

A cruise.

GADDay · 30/01/2021 10:12

Don't be so damned ignorant!

Dubai city is a bit meh - the desert is incredible and the surrounding Emirates/countries are breathtaking. The food is wonderful and there is a LOT to do.

Thailand is touristy but there is AMAZING history/culture & the Thai people are amazingly warm & welcoming.

As for your bizzarre, pre AND ill conceived ideas about Australia. Jesus wept. I dont even have anything to say, except your opinions say more about you, than you think.

ShanghaiDiva · 30/01/2021 10:12

Maldives: looks stunning, but would be bored out of my brain in two days.
Anywhere in an all inclusive hotel with ‘entertainment’ - my idea of hell.
