Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit

I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

@TramaDollface

South Africa. One of the most diverse, incredibly beautiful places on the planet. Mind blown.

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 10:15

Like I've said lots of Australia looks just never really seen the pull. Also I'll be honest the long haul puts me off... I wouldn't take DC's there.

It's a trip of a lifetime type place and there are other places that appeal once we can afford a trip of a lifetime, a lot of of Central and South America for example.

Should say looks lovely. I have friends living there. They enjoy some aspects but find other aspects of the culture hard, particularly after the UK. Same from my Australian neighbours!

London - obviously I've been and parts of it I love but when I have to go for work it just fills me with dread, the commute, the tube etc.

No desire to go to any parts of Africa or India. Maybe South Africa to see Table Mountain if I were to go to any.

Have done Dubai, I was disappointed by how small it is in my head it was going to be like a New York.

I'd have no problem with the Seychelles or Maldives they sound like a dream right now!! However I do get they can be too quiet I think this is where the Caribbean wins as generally they have thought of some boredom busters.

@AnnaMagnani

New Zealand, Dubai, Canada, Australia

Am not outdoorsy or into sunbathing or shopping.

Mainland europe - musty, overcrowded poverty stricken landscape with very little to offer. No thanks

Which bits exactly? Even in Eastern Europe in destination cities it's like any other tourist city in the UK - luxury shops, amazing heritage and food, then travel a bit and see stunning scenery.

You could say the same criticism of some bits of the UK - the bits tourists don't go to.

New Zealand & Canada.

Well fuck me. This thread has me picking my jaw up off the floor.

Seriously. You cannot even imagine what you are missing. You probably would not appreciate it anyway.

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 10:18

@jakeyboy1 agree re London. Used to love it but now when I go for work I just find it stressful.

@GintyMcGinty

Oooo a prejudice thread. Great.
This thread is nuts! I've never seen so many assertions based on ignorance before. My mind is truly boggled that I walk this earth with so many people who hold these kinds of views. ShockConfusedSad
Fastedbrownie · 30/01/2021 10:21

I should mention, I have travelled all over central Europe, and would return if I had to, but it is certainly not at the top of my list of places I'd go off my own back for pleasure.

THisbackwithavengeance · 30/01/2021 10:25

I always hated the idea of Australia but loved it when I eventually visited.

I have no interest in visiting the Far East, namely China, Cambodia and Vietnam (although have been to Singapore and loved it). People rave about it but I can't get my head past the animal cruelty, recent horrible history and poor human rights.

I'm sure if I actually went, I would probably change my mind but .... no.

Miljea · 30/01/2021 10:27
Grin

My (rural) Aussie BIL came to visit us in Britain and hated it. He had zero interest in anything historical or cultural; he could only view anything through 'comparison with home' eyes, he had zero curiosity.

Poor DH spent the first week trying to fire his bro's enthusiasm but gave up to leave him watching repeats of Reg Somebody's All-Aussie Fishing Adventure on the telly all day, instead.

I suspect some posters on here are his equivalent!

GADDay · 30/01/2021 10:27

@jamiefrasersswingingkilt

Me too. I was getting so worked up about it. Then I read through all the OPs posts - clearly one of those who only appreciates the UK.

Notanorthadontist · 30/01/2021 10:30

@Fastedbrownie

Mainland europe - musty, overcrowded poverty stricken landscape with very little to offer. No thanks.

Dubai - just a less classy hong kong with shitty rights.

Haha! Where do you live OP? Are you in Aus or NZ? Clearly not the UK as the only countries in mainland Europe with a higher population density than here are Belgium and the Netherlands (unless you include Monaco and Vatican City) I’m with you on Dubai though. Never any desire to visit any Disney resorts but otherwise always up for visiting somewhere new.
Fi57 · 30/01/2021 10:31

@fudgecat

Lidl
😂😂😂 I agree, Aldi much more scenic!
nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 10:32

My opinions are based on my life experience and also too many times being encouraged to do something/go somewhere knowing I'd dislike it and being proved right!! E.g snow boarding holiday...pressured and harangued into going, hated the activity, hated the resort and basically spent most of the time reading in my room! Shit holiday. Equally some resorts in Spain. Couldn't wait to leave.

Re Thailand you only see the touristy bits on the news social media etc. But now that people have mentioned about the other parts that sound lovely it does sound like it would be a nice holiday. I went to Mallorca stayed in one of those resorty entertainment type hotels which was a bit grim but the kids loved it. We spent a few days exploring the island which was lovely outside the resorty type places.

addicted2spaniels · 30/01/2021 10:32

I don't see the appeal of beach holidays in places like the caribbean or maldives but that's very personal.... I've got way too short an attention span to just sit and look at the same view for 14 days. I can do that at home for free Grin.

EmmanuelleMakro · 30/01/2021 10:33

Another vote for Dubai - just...why would you??

AliasGrape · 30/01/2021 10:33

I don't think there's anywhere I'd turn down a free trip to.

But when money and holidays are limited it's fair enough to have places you're not that bothered about going surely? I've no real desire to visit Auustralia, it would be expensive and a very long journey so if I had the money and time to do that kind of trip there are other places I'd choose. I'm not sure that's prejudice?

If anyone wants to offer me an all expenses paid trip I'd take it.

AnnaMagnani · 30/01/2021 10:35

Maybe South Africa to see Table Mountain

Ha, I've been to Cape Town and still not seen Table Mountain.

Don't go on a rainy day, the fecker is invisible.

GADDay · 30/01/2021 10:37

Because there is a great deal around Dubai. You are not imprisoned in the city you know.
Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit
jakeyboy1 · 30/01/2021 10:38

@annamagani haha ok I'll bear it in mind!!

To be fair I'd go anywhere right now!!!

To the strange Europe comments - we went to Berlin a couple of years ago and people were so negative "why would you want to go there" it's one of the most interesting places I've ever been!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 30/01/2021 10:39

Sweeping statements galore. Maldives/Seychelles - amazing snorkelling FYI, but maybe that doesn’t fit the narrative. Given we can go absolutely nowhere atm, I can’t imagine crossing places off my list now Confused

MrsMariaReynolds · 30/01/2021 10:40

I love sightseeing, so I enjoy worldwide city breaks the most for my holiday destinations. Restaurants, landmarks, museums, urban buzz. Love it!

I tend to shy away from preferred holiday spots, like most of the U.K.! 7 nights in a cottage or caravan in some rainy backwater? No effing way.

See also: any cruise, or any all-inclusive resort in a sunny European location. 7+ days of buffets and the sitting by the same pool day in and day out. Boring.

davidsSchitt · 30/01/2021 10:41

"Australia is a beautiful country and friendly people. So much to see from the rainforests, green pastured wine country to rugged Tasmania. The cities are vibrant foodie places and it's so clean. They respect their beaches and wildlife."

I was really looking forward to Australia and spent a few weeks travelling around. Unfortunately my experience was the opposite. I did enjoy the rainforests and Cairns but I certainly didn't find everywhere clean or friendly. The beaches around Sydney in particular.

I also met some very hostile people and some just downright rude. Perth in particular was dull and felt pretty rough. Enjoyed Fremantle though.

I doubt I'll ever return.
