Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit

I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

@TJ17

I need to stick up for the Maldives.

My fave ever place in the world. We tagged it on to the end of a more adventurous holiday so only had 5 days there as we also thought it could get boring. Well there was no time to get bored and as we were leaving we wished we stayed longer!

There's plenty to do, boat trips to the capital where they have markets, mosques you can visit.
You can go snorkelling/diving with turtles/Manta rays (literally the most beautiful under water experience)
They have themed evenings and BBQs where they do Maldivian dancing, candlelit dinners on the beach (we did this and it was just the two of us. Still the most romantic and beautiful experience of my life)

Equally if you want to just lounge on your deck of the beach and read a book you can. All inclusive food and drink is on all day.

So so much more than what you think it is!

We’re all different, you obviously loved the Maldives and had a great time. Everything you describe just convinces me that I wouldn’t like it. Themed evenings, boat trips, diving are all negatives for me. I would enjoy local markets and dining on a beach but that’s not unique to make it attractive. I’m not being snooty or judgmental, it just isn’t my idea of a holiday I would enjoy to the full. Going on a boat would make me seasick and possibly have me in bed for a couple of days after with vertigo, so watery places are a complete no-no.

I can see that if you love beaches, snorkelling, diving the Maldives is going to be the holiday of a lifetime.

However we are all different and I hate all those things so I have no desire to go there.

I would love to go to Florence as I love art, history and museums - but Florence regularly turns up on threads of biggest disappointments from people who have been told it is massively romantic and get there and discover there is nothing to do but look at a lot of churches Grin

I'm glad we are all so different!

USA
Australia
New Zealand
South Africa
Mexico doesn't appeal much either
No desire to go on a cruise either, although would consider sailing holiday on smaller boat in the Aegean or Caribbean.

I went to Mexico and it was great. We flew into Cancun which I think would be awful though! We went on a tour which took us to some really interesting and less touristy places e.g. Palenque and Merida. Swimming in a cenote (limestone sinkhole) is amazing!

Mexico has everything for everyone but I'm biased! I'm Mexican ;)
