Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit

I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

Ha! Poor food in the Lake District, what a weird comment.

Oblomov20 · 30/01/2021 10:42

Blimey. I've never been anywhere I didn't like. Clearly easily pleased.

GADDay · 30/01/2021 10:43

To answer the op. There is nowhere I wouldn't visit.

There are places I would not go back to. My opinions are based on actual experience - not just writing off whole countries because you don't fancy it based on your limited exposure to pictures online.

dottiedaisee · 30/01/2021 10:43

Dubai...too artificial
Maldives..nothing to do
I went to NY very reluctantly a couple of years ago to meet up with a friend...I have to say I absolutely loved it and will definitely be going back . It was madness but the best place for people watching!!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/01/2021 10:44

Dubai. Soulless.

52andblue · 30/01/2021 10:44

I've not been out of the UK for 20 years (for £ reasons)
So I'd be unlikely to turn my nose up at a trip for my & my kids anywhere
But I'd be less keen on visiting places with Human Rights issues.
And less keen on 'Resorts' such as Disney, Dubai, Vegas etc.
But getting on a plane anywhere seems like a dream right now.
I wonder if cheap air travel is over for the forseeable future?

davidsSchitt · 30/01/2021 10:45

"Poor food in the Lake District"
😅 that is weird

wellthatsunusual · 30/01/2021 10:46

Varied scenery is not how I would describe mainland Europe.

Are mountains, lakes, rivers, beaches, cliffs, green places, wet places, dry places, hot climates and cold climates and all that does to the landscape not enough? What else is there?

wellthatsunusual · 30/01/2021 10:49

@Oblomov20

Same here. I have found something I have enjoyed in every place I've ever been to. I've had places I liked more than others obviously, but generally it's just nice to see somewhere different.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't enjoy a holiday that involves lying by a pool, but if it's in a resort where I could leave and go to explore the local town then I'd find something to do I'm sure.

davidsSchitt · 30/01/2021 10:49

Forests, snow, cities, ancient sites, islands....

Sarcobaleno · 30/01/2021 10:49

All the people saying Maldives... it was a fab holiday. Snorkelling, scuba diving to see the most unbelievable coral reefs. Fishing then bbq-ing our catch. I'd go again in a heartbeat.

""look! Over there!"

In the words of Jada Essence Hall Grin

TenCornMaidens · 30/01/2021 10:50

Australia is my main one.

Shamoo · 30/01/2021 10:50

Some of the comments on here 😂 - how can people be so judgmental and dismissive of places they freely admit they have never been to. So random!

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 10:50

I should have clarified poor food for me, as a vegetarian. I get for others it's a gourmet paradise if you like "gastropub" British food. I don't, I prefer Indian, Nepalese, Lebanese, tapas and similar. Except for one tapas restaurant in Keswick the reheated overpriced slop I was served in the pubs was poor.

Actually on recollection there is a lovely vegetarian restaurant in Ambleside which years ago was lovely.

Anywhere it’s illegal to be gay (so around 70 countries) which includes popular destinations like Barbados, Maldives, Kenya, Mauritius, UAE, Malaysia, Singapore etc.

I refused to travel to the US when Trump was president, equally I wouldn’t travel to Poland due to the recently passed abortion laws.

MaryIsA · 30/01/2021 10:51

If I won a free holiday...is there anywhere I wouldn’t go? Hmmmm.

Dubai is very far down my list as is the Maldives. I love a snorkel but there has to be something else. I’d be playing Russian roulette after 2 days on a beach.

lightand · 30/01/2021 10:54

Anywhere with a waterfall.
The water is up high, then it falls lower.
Like watching a tap.

MamaDane · 30/01/2021 10:56

I'd have to pass on any homophobic (where it's illegal at least) country really as I'm a lesbian.

So popular places like Egypt and UAE, I have no interest in visiting.

Silenceisgolden20 · 30/01/2021 11:00

@nuitdesetoiles

Cornwall was/is ok as a family holiday but it is overrated. Been quite a few times now, the coastline is stunning but the countryside in the interior is nothing special.. esp compared to some other parts of the UK. Northumberland has it all!!
Wow Shock

What a statement

DBML · 30/01/2021 11:00

@nuitdesetoiles

Oh gosh yes Florida too. Looks awful. If I won a holiday there in a competition I'd give it away to someone who'd appreciate it. Similarly Las Vegas.
If you ever win then, think of me! I spend 1/6 of my life in Florida and eventually plan to spent 1/2 my life there each year.

Whilst Disney and the parks are commercial (but fun), Florida is stunningly beautiful. The woodlands filled with deer; the clear blue springs; amazing beaches; vast wildlife, it is so much more than Orlando.

I only comment on places I’ve been op as I like to actually experience somewhere before I generate a view on it. You couldn’t pay me to return to

  • the Greek islands
  • Turkey
  • Certain coastal parts of Spain or the Balearics
  • The Canary’s
  • Brittany or St. Tropez France
  • Dominion Republic

See, St. Petersburg is a great city, and one of the things that made it so great is that it had no airs to it. You go there with zero expectations, and it blows you away. You go to Paris and you're like...this is it? This is the city everybody bangs on about so much. The food is mediocre, the shops sell the same shit they sell at home, the streets smell like sewrage, and my hotel is warning me not to leave after dark or I'll get raped and mugged. Like yes, there's the effile tower and famous paintings, but once you see them then what?
Not sure about St Petersburg having no airs, it's often described as the Venice of the North, and plenty of people bang on about how amazing it is, in the same way people do about Paris. I certainly didn't go there with zero expectations (but still loved it, and went back twice more).

As for Paris, my experience was different to yours. I had some great food (even though I'm vegetarian), the shops sold plenty of things which you can't get here or which are hard to come by, and no hotel ever told me not to go it after dark - I went out to restaurants, bars, a concert all after dark, and travelled on rhe metro. It does smell of sewerage a bit, but so to a lot of cities. And I found plenty more to see than the Eiffel tower and famous paintings. Sacre coeur and Montmartre, Notre Dame (pre fire) , the Grands Boulevards, Pere Lachaise cemetery, walking along the Seine, exploring the Latin Quarter, Luxembourg gardens, musee d'orsay. It isn't my absolute favourite city, and I can understand that people might not enjoy everything there is to do and see, but there is certainly more to it than the Eiffel tower and famous paintings.

DBML · 30/01/2021 11:03

And I wouldn’t vacation here in the UK either. I did enough of that as a child/teen and loathe UK holidays. UK holiday companies are even worse e.g. Butlins.

wellthatsunusual · 30/01/2021 11:04

I think Brittany is probably my favourite place in the world. It's like the beautiful west coast of Ireland but with sunshine.
