Welcome in ADs. Snuggle up hygge-style 'cause there ain't much going on out there for a while... except rain.

I haven't got a pussy of my own for gratuitous showing off, so I shall pretend to be Dr Evil with Mr Biggleswade Grin

I think lockdown is being prolonged because we are financially so far in the shift, we might as well keep going. As soon as we come out of lockdown the mess is going to become apparent very quickly.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 08/02/2021 20:37

@worldgonecrazy I think you are onto something there. It is almost like lockdown enables them to keep their heads in the sand, to an extent. When we come out of lockdown... Well, brown trousers all round for the first public inquiry. And then I hope there is a second inquiry after, say, 7 or 10 years, when the full costs (economic, social, health) of their repeated lockdowns have become apparent. They'll really need their brown trousers then.

I think you could be right- surely many the people that worked in pubs and restaurants and closed shops have moved on and found jobs elsewhere - how are those industries going to reopen after being shut for so long? And surely the D’s are going to want it to be ‘bleach shot Before entering the pub, you have to give us your national insurance number and your mothers maiden name, and you can’t walk around or go anywhere, and you can only have one drink because drunk people can’t social distance’

I’d rather stay at home with my vibrator. Yawn.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/02/2021 21:44

Our flurries of snow on and off haven't amounted to anything.

I seem to have formed a regular run habit with a school mum since new year (girl in DS1's class, he thinks she's OK, but not the most natural companion to him). Anyway she dropped me a text asking if I was up for it and I replied honestly "when you want to say no, but know it's good for you Grin " And yes it was good for us and neither probably would have gone solo. But that wind is bitter.

Kind of looking forwards to half term from Friday... except there's nowhere to go other than a walk. I suppose booking the NT is viable, but that really is as exciting as it could get. Feb HT can be a bugger to fill in normal years.

Staff in pubs and restaurants most are furloughed, champing at the bit to get back to work here. The casual staff students also.
ISaySteadyOn · 08/02/2021 21:56

I have a polite request. I have just been listening to DH read Winter Holiday by Arthur Ransome (you should all read it) to DS and 2 of the lovely characters are Dick and Dorothea Callum aka the Ds. Can we add a letter when we shorten Dementor so as not to mix two literary ADs with D-es?

Oh are they? That’s brilliant news! I just wonder what kind of bullshit restrictions the Ds are going to insist on to take all the fun out of it.

I’m so glad those people have jobs to go back to, I had no idea that’s made my day.

However I’m fucked off about a thread about carers and whether we should be forced to hAve the vaccine- it’s just reminded me that we really are looked down on as the lowest of the low by most people... just arse wipers. Saddens me greatly becuase I put my heart and soul into my work.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/02/2021 22:03

I'd worry about staffing events/ entertainments that haven't had any chance to opperate in 2020. I don't know what ratio is casual/ contract, but you need to retain an avaliable skilled core with the funds to reinvest when that time returns.

I have a big annual event late March, so it fell right at the start of the first lockdown, and no surprises cancelled this March. I really hope it can reestablish for next year... Difficult with the timing and damage within its industry though. The actual company is quite small and just puts on a few major events a year alongside regular work in its industry. It also relies on international travel for many of the top presenters. The whole thing is the total antithesis of anything Covid Secure!

@ISaySteadyOn DS1 is reading Winter Holiday at the moment and every time he talks about the Ds I thought the same thing Confused

We could use BDs - bloody dementors?

Yes, that is a good idea! Or shorten to include an extra letter or too - DTS, or similar.
Weedsnseeds1 · 08/02/2021 23:15

Well, I spent today in a lamb slaughter and cutting plant.
I had a temperature check, rapid Covid test, went back to sit in my car for 30 min.
All OK, negative. The factories pay for their own tests, by the way.
Looked at the cutting end today, 160 people, almost treading on each other's feet, for 12 hours, but no real way to spread it out.
Yes, they have masks, sanitiser, the odd perspex screen, temperature and laminar flow checks, but no way on earth are you going to stop it spreading.
With the best will in the world to protect their staff, factories are struggling, but there is so little news coverage.

There was an author who knew about balance of risk. "Better drowned than duffers..."

(I am not necessarily recommending sending all your children over the age of 6 off in a sailing boat to camp on an island.)

It shows the range of opinions on this thread, I've had both doses of the sinopharm vaccine! But I would certainly not judge anyone who didn't want it for perfectly good reasons. I might slightly raise an eyebrow at the bill gates microchip theory since he would have a much easier job just tracking all our phones but even then I wouldn't be nasty to someone.

In the end I got the vaccine because I want to be allowed to travel and see my family. If they said everyone who goes on a plane now has to wear a washing up bowl on their head and sandwich bags as shoes I would do it just to see family again.

ISaySteadyOn · 09/02/2021 06:13

Thank you everyone. I like BDs (as in the States, BD briefs are also a type of pantsGrin).

If/when offered the jab, I probably will take it but I am very far down the list so who knows what will happen before then.

@DWPmisery1972, do you care for the elderly? If you do, could I ask a question that's been bothering me?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 09/02/2021 06:31

Morning all, just sat with my breakfast and a coffee catching up.
Was heartened to hear Van Tam last night talk about variations and vaccines and about "scary news headlines" (though I just kept thinking "you want someone to blame for that pal, look to your left")

2020BogOff · 09/02/2021 06:36

I booked a holiday last week.

For........ 2022

I have no faith in the government getting their shit together this year and ignoring all the BDs shouting for continued lockdown until covid is gone. I figured by 2022 enough people will have changed their stance on lockdown.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 09/02/2021 07:16

Ooooo where you off @BogRollBOGOF?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 09/02/2021 07:17

Or @2020BogOff even.
Sorry coffee not taken effect yet.

2020BogOff · 09/02/2021 07:21

A cruise around the med if the company hasn't gone bust by then Grin.

I fancied some pampering.

DrRamsesEmerson · 09/02/2021 07:50

Morning all! I’ve also booked a holiday, to the Canaries at Christmas- I don’t think it’s likely to happen but I decided I would really kick myself if I haven’t booked anything and it turns out we can travel.

I’ll have the jab when I’m offered it- if we’re ever going to get out of this, mass vaccination is the only hope. DH is older than me and had his first one ten days ago.

I wish people at large cared more about civil liberties. This thread is a shining beacon of good sense, but I’m very troubled by the number of people who would be prepared to live like this indefinitely to keep themselves ‘safe’ (when safety is an illusion anyway).

I cant believe how my MH has improved just having a holiday booked for the future. It is giving me something to focus on instead of all this misery.

The lack of occasions ahead is one of the things that's quietly bothered me since New Year. I did manage to do things like book a day at the zoo or NT, and indeed had a week in a caravan over the summer which helped break the groundhog day. Even in November, I had a nice little routine of walking with my friend... but school continuing made a massive difference. And then there was Christmas such as it was, and that's where groundhog day crept back.

It's a tough time of year, but February is short and well punctuated by things like Valentines and Shrove Tuesday and all that kind of thing feels abstract and lost now.

Morning. Lovely to hear about holiday plans! We had an airbnb in the Canaries booked last year, which was obvs cancelled, but we managed to shift the booking to this October. I am keeping everything crossed!

Going to have a bit of a browse for a break in the UK too. Somewhere fun for the kids near the sea.
