Mine would be
(1) Philip Cairns, disappeared in 1986 from Dublin.He was 13

(2 )Trevor Deely, disappeared walking home from a Christmas party in 2000.

(3). Raonaid Murray murdered yards from her home. She was only 17.
Never been solved.

Regarding Andrew Gosden, I have always thought there are two realistic possibilities.

  1. He met someone either on his walks home from school, or at a summer camp he’d attended earlier that year (which his parents said he’d seemed uncharacteristically enthused about). There would be no digital trail. Arranged to meet in London, and he came to harm at the hands of this person. To my eye, the CCTV footage from King’s Cross looks like he’s looking out for someone.
  1. He made the decision to skive off and travel to London alone as an act of rebellion, perhaps after getting bullied at school/on the school bus (which he had recently stopped using despite the walk being 4 miles). He then came to harm following a chance encounter with someone unknown to him. Andrew’s dad described him as not being streetwise, so I think this is sadly a possibility.

I simply cannot imagine a 14 year old successfully managing to disappear completely - especially in Central London - no matter how intelligent they are. He even had a very distinguishing feature on his ear. I believe he didn’t take much with him because he genuinely was planning to return home that evening. The fact that nearby CCTV footage was never inspected properly is a travesty.

By all accounts his family seem decent, open and non-judgmental, although of course we can never know what has happened behind closed doors.

Re Andrew Gosden hate to say it but having heard his dad interviewed, I felt they were a tad naive and very laid back. They were sceptical about him being groomed, his withdrawn behaviour was just a phase and nothing to worry about, lost his mobile phone but didn’t want a replacement- really, a 14 year old boy ? Hmm Apparently they’d offered him the opportunity to travel down to London on his own to visit relatives which he refused. I just wonder if this was his attempt to sneak down and say ‘look I can do it’....

BorderlineHappy · 21/01/2021 17:40

@WhatAreWordsWorth .

Another boy went missing i think it was after Andrew.He had also been to that Summer Camp.

I cant think of his name..

It's so terrible that the CCTV trail was accessed too late to find out where Andrew Gosden went from kings cross.

I agree that he must have been meeting someone.

Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry. Still no updates - possibly no starting point. That news disturbs me so much. I briefly worked with a very close family member of theirs.
That case is so sad - but they have arrested someone www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-53238446

The 3 cases I'd like to see solved the most are:
Claudia Lawrence
The Dutch girls in Panama
Esther Dingley who vanished into thin air while hiking in the Pyrenees towards the end of last year.

That was strange. I read this article about Esther Dingley and her partner on bbc news. Then 6 days later she went missing

@LadyEloise

@Beansbitch I just looked up the Sandy Davidson case. So awfully sad. Why did this case not get publicity it deserved ?

As a parent I would find it so hard to keep going if one of my children disappeared. What a horrific thing to have to live with.

It's such a sad case, I think it's his sister who IV heard interviewed a few times and it's heartbreaking, she's still fighting to find him but nobody knows anything about him Sad
SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 21/01/2021 18:29

I often think about Andrew Gosden

He definitely did not intend on returning home (by train at least) as the ticket clerk remembered Andrew as he had declined to buy a return ticket even though it only would have cost an additional 50p on top of the £31.40 single that he purchased.

The other boy who was also a gifted mathematician and went missing in London 11 months after Andrew was Alex Sloley. It was a very similar case but there was no mention that they had ever met or knew one another.

I also think it was likely that Andrew had been bullied and it may have been why he stopped taking the school bus. To walk 4 miles home rather than use the school bus is unusual unless you have either missed it or want to walk home in nice weather occasionally. School buses can be like lord of the flies sometimes and it can frequently be a place that kids are bullied. It may be where his mobile phone was "lost" and may explain why he didn't want it replaced as the bullies may have tried to take a new one off him too.

It would be tough for a 14 year old boy (who looked younger) to survive undetected under the radar for so long but I really hope he has. The 2018 report of an online conversation someone had with a person using the name Andy Roo (Roo was Andrews family nickname) was strange. Allegedly this person had asked someone online for money as his boyfriend had left him and he had no money for rent but couldn't access a bank account as he said he had left home when he was 14 could have been a hoax but offers a slim slither of hope.

I was going to say the two boys. The police have a good idea who, but due to the total incompetence at the time they disappeared the truth is unlikely to ever be known.

Yes it was just such strange timing. Her partner seems to think a third party was involved. I wonder if she was being stalked online after that bbc article was published. It was apparently clear from her social media posts exactly where she was when she went missing and that she was alone. Sadly I think she has been missing for too long now for a happy ending. Although the police have said one option is that she went missing voluntarily which sadly I interpret as meaning suicide.

Reading this thread there are so many unsolved disappearances, such agony for the families and other loved ones.

Labobo · 21/01/2021 18:53

I read that article about life in the camper van and the article about her going missing and hadn't put them together. Didn't realise it was the same woman.

ChezLuce · 22/01/2021 11:21

I thought it was most likely it was accidental and they'd find her when the snow cleared, but the French police seem to think it's not an accident and it was either voluntary or third party involvement

West Memphis three is a baffling case.

Robbybobtail · 22/01/2021 18:14

I’ve been reading up a bit about Billie-jo Jenkins as it brought back the case when a pp mentioned her but I had completely forgotten about it - I can’t believe it was 24 ago.

I find it astonishing that “Mr B.” wasn’t looked into more thoroughly. I can’t seem to find any explanation as to why he was disregarded as a suspect? He was mentally unwell, was right near Billie’s house at the time of the murder (several witnesses) was acting erratically and was later found to have some kind of obsession with bits of plastic bags (he had a pieces of one in his trousers and also shoved up his nose, as did Billie, inexplicably).
It seems to me he was a very likely candidate so WHY did they discount him? Does anyone know?

Asha Degree - what happened to that poor girl out in the dark and cold night.

JonBenet - would love to know but there's so many secrets in that family.

Springfield Three - drives me mad.

There's hundreds more - David Glenn Lewis, Judy Smith, Jodie Huisentruit, Jennifer Kesse, where do all these people go.

@hellasciously

West Memphis three is a baffling case.
To me there is overwhelming evidence one of the boys step fathers did it, Terry Hobbs. His hair DNA was found at the scene, his alibi said he wasn't actually with him all night, his story changes so much and he has history before and after the murders of violence and sexual assault. Including his own daughter who testified against him in another case.
