Death Penalty?

Just seen a post on FB suggesting Priti Patel has asked for a paper on the restoration of the death penalty, now we have left the EU. Of course it could be completely false, but if true would you support the idea?

I wouldn't, simply because we know that innocent people in the past have been killed.

Of course not. State sponsored murder is no way to run a country. I wouldn’t believe everything you read on Facebook but given her track record it’s not unlikely. She’s insane.

WhatTheFuck123 · 27/12/2020 09:54

An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind

IamTomHanks · 27/12/2020 09:56

No. There is no evidence it curbs violent crime, and to be done "properly" (i.e. the most minimum chance of killing an innocent person) it costs taxpayers hundreds of thousands of pounds in appeals and re-trials. There is no good reason for it.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/12/2020 09:57

No.

We are not barbarians.

Neveranynamesleft · 27/12/2020 09:57

This argument is as old as the hills. Like anything else, some will be for it and some will be against.
If I was pushed, I would have to admit I would vote for it, but for 1000% sure guilty murder cases. I do not agree with keeping such murderers at the taxpayers expense.

Neveranynamesleft · 27/12/2020 09:59

Its debatable whether theres a good reason for it. Maybe ask the family of a murder victim for example.

MaudTheInvincible · 27/12/2020 09:59

No. No civilised country would allow such a thing.

I agree, but the UK are in the position to re-introduce it, something we haven't had since 1969.

I’ve been saying since last year that the death penalty will be the next policy that the Tory party will win the next election on. Over the next few years, there will be increased coverage on it in the media, murders will be given more airtime and the public will be encouraged into being whipped into a frenzy over individual cases. Then Boris (or whoever) will start making a case for it. We aren’t tied to the EU’s justice system anymore and I would put money on it being reinstated in Britain in the next five years, or at the very least discussed in parliament.

Is the UK planning on leaving the Council of Europe?

GrammarTeacher · 27/12/2020 10:05

@Neveranynamesleft I'm not convinced there is such a thing as a definite though.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/12/2020 10:06

I agree, but the UK are in the position to re-introduce it, something we haven't had since 1969.

But why would we want to?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/12/2020 10:07

🤮God l hope not🤮🤮

meditrina · 27/12/2020 10:07

It is completely false.

UK's obligations on this were and are to the UN - we abolished the death penalty in 1965 (with only NI waiting until 1973)

Brexit is wholly irrelevant to our UN treaty obligations.

I think this FB story is either being promulgated by someone totally ignorant of international treaties and law, or someone who just want to be malicious.

Vargas · 27/12/2020 10:08

No. It's barbaric.

RoseAndRose · 27/12/2020 10:10

No we're not!

Little thing called the UN

of course we won't be breaking our existing obligations!

BananaPop2020 · 27/12/2020 10:11

There are so many reasons to not bring this back, least of all the fact it is absolutely zero deterrent.

Not as far as I know, but it cant make binding laws and I fully expect the Tories to leave the European Court of Human Rights.

GrammarTeacher · 27/12/2020 10:12

Priti Patel has form for being in favour of the Death Penalty though

RoseAndRose · 27/12/2020 10:12

Even if we left Council of Europe, we're not leaving the UN!

jillypill · 27/12/2020 10:14

I go back and forth in my head on this argument. I think a lot of people would vote on it purely on the basis that everyday we see sentences that are far too lenient.

I agree, the issue I have is sentences can be very lenient. Now collectively I'm against the death penalty but if my loved one was murdered & the perp was facing freedom in a few yrs, absolutely for it.

JohnMcClane · 27/12/2020 10:14

Oh for God's sake! Do you get all your news off FB? Hmm

averylongtimeago · 27/12/2020 10:15

Apart from it being barbaric, it doesn't work as a deterrent and the many documented cases of a miscarriage of justice mean no right minded person should support it.

But Pritti Patel? I can see her jumping at the chance to hang people- preferably in public.

Catlover77 · 27/12/2020 10:16

Yes absolutely

It won’t happen though
