Death Penalty?

Ifailed · 27/12/2020 09:52

Just seen a post on FB suggesting Priti Patel has asked for a paper on the restoration of the death penalty, now we have left the EU. Of course it could be completely false, but if true would you support the idea?

I wouldn't, simply because we know that innocent people in the past have been killed.

OP posts:

Some only take 2-3 years.

That's even scarier, and yes, I've heard about the botched execution's. Horrific.

Fizzydrinks123 · 27/12/2020 11:58

Goodness - a second thread on this - just posted on the other one. It is patently a false scaremongering story and not ever going to happen.

Do you get all your news from Facebook? Grow up.

@Gilead

I have (an adult) child who is likely to admit to crimes he has not committed due to his illness. Does that satisfy your 100% criteria?
Gilead is right. It’s incredibly easy to coerce even grown adults into saying things that aren’t true. It’s incredibly easy to bribe people into admitting to something they didn’t do and, at the risk of sounding crazy, it’s incredibly easy (and becoming easier) to make it look as though there’s 100% proof that someone did something they 100% did not.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

No.

We are not barbarians.

We might not be but the government are.
Vinorosso74 · 27/12/2020 12:08

No, I wouldn't support it. To be honest, I wouldn't put it past Priti Patel to propose such a thing.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/12/2020 12:23

Has it been proposed?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/12/2020 12:24

What are the sauces, apart from the Dorothy on FB, of course.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/12/2020 12:25

sources

Sorry, I'm multi tasking with watching Bridgerton, and am easily distracted by boxing there.

AgeLikeWine · 27/12/2020 12:31

Is there an actual credible source for this? i.e not social media bullshit....

ClutchingMyPearlsAppropriately · 27/12/2020 12:34

@IamTomHanks

Though I can see why there's still some element of pressure or force to it if you don't have a 'good' enough reason not to.

I can't find where I read this, but if I remember correctly they get a bonus if they volunteer. Given that Correction's Officers aren't making a tonne of money, I think that's pretty sneaky and abhorrent.

Urrgh! I agree. Talk about manipulation. 'That's how they get ya', as the saying goes.

DNA and video evidence can easily be faked these days.

Soutiner · 27/12/2020 12:48

Lee Rigby’s killers spring to mind. Plenty of witnesses. I can’t see how the DNA evidence of blood on their hands and their video confession immediately after the murder could be faked.

notafanoftheman · 27/12/2020 12:49

Fair enough. My objection to the death penalty there would be soundness of mind.

Heatherjayne1972 · 27/12/2020 12:52

PP isn’t a nice person - could totally believe she might suggest it

However we won’t be reintroducing capital punishment
We are still part of the UN. As stated above

EagleFlight · 27/12/2020 12:53

No, I wouldn’t vote for or support it in anyway. However, I have to admit that there have been some people (eg Ted Bundy) put to death that I don’t feel an iota about and likewise people like the Wests, Brady & Hindley, Sutcliffe etc that I really couldn’t find it in myself to be concerned about.

Spudlet · 27/12/2020 12:53

Lee Rugby’s killers would want to be executed though, I’m sure. They’d want to be martyrs. No. Let them be locked away and forgotten, instead. I don’t want any further barbarism taking place in my name. We should aim to be better than that.

I wonder how many bereaved mothers would have been executed on the word of Roy Meadow, should we have had the death penalty at that time.

BananaPop2020 · 27/12/2020 12:54

@Soutiner executing Lee Rigby’s killers would do nothing other than make martyrs of them. Plus, if people do not fear death, or see it as a necessary part of a bigger agenda, it is no punishment at all.

BananaPop2020 · 27/12/2020 12:55

@Spudlet excellent point. All this talk of the infallibility of expert testimony and DNA....nonsense.

Jennygentle · 27/12/2020 13:00

It was abolished for very good reasons.
Much as I would like to see child rapists/murderers suffer horribly, I understand why it has no place in a civilised society.

DianaT1969 · 27/12/2020 13:01

No. I'd rather see deterrent sentencing for violent crimes. We don't have that.

WanderingHopefully · 27/12/2020 13:03

Not another thread on this. Care to provide a reliable source for this OP? Other than FB or Twitter.

Kaliorphic · 27/12/2020 13:06

There's always the element of doubt though. The courts have got it wrong in the past. On that basis I don't think we could. Not that I think it will anyway. I wonder why this is trending today when it's something she said a long time ago and I thought had retracted it anyway. What other news is it covering up 🤔

ClutchingMyPearlsAppropriately · 27/12/2020 13:07

Plus, if people do not fear death, or see it as a necessary part of a bigger agenda, it is no punishment at all.

I agree with this. It's exactly why I said death is the easier way out for some people.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/12/2020 13:19

No, as much as people may want to see someone dead when they commit a horrendous crime, doesn't mean ot should happen.
