Is someone told you they lost their parents when they were “young”, how old would you assume they were?

Title says it all really. Is someone told you they lost both parents when they were young what age range would you assume? What would be the cut off above which you wouldn’t call someone young for losing their parents?

Why?

Vinosaurus · 14/12/2020 22:42

Younger than 30 I'd say.

LittleCabbage · 14/12/2020 22:42

Twenties or younger

Windyone · 14/12/2020 22:42

Under 20?

MichelleScarn · 14/12/2020 22:43

Dh lost his df at 5, that's horrifically young, anything under 50 is young id say.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 14/12/2020 22:44

Anything from 18-30.

I would expect someone who lost a parent as an actual child to say “as a child/state an age” to give the tragedy it’s proper size.

waterandlemonjuice · 14/12/2020 22:44

Under 30

SoWhatNo · 14/12/2020 22:44

I'd wonder why you were asking, if you asked me that.

lottiegarbanzo · 14/12/2020 22:44

Depends how old they are when they're telling me.

But, under 30, probably under 25.

Poppyolive90 · 14/12/2020 22:44

I’d imagine they mean perhaps 21 or less but I’d probably assume younger than 18 really if they made a point of saying young

lifestooshort123 · 14/12/2020 22:44

Under 20-25

MichelleScarn · 14/12/2020 22:45

30 I meant but would still feel list at 50 l think.

GreenTiles22 · 14/12/2020 22:45

Under 35 to lose both parents I would consider young.

I know some people who are 70 and still have both parents alive! They are aged 90-100.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 14/12/2020 22:45

Depends a bit. Anything under about 40 could easily be “oh, I was quite young really when I lost both my parents”.”I lost both my parents when I was young” I’d probably assume more like under 25.

“When I was young” also sounds quite different coming from someone of 40 or 60 or 80...

Poppyolive90 · 14/12/2020 22:45

Sorry I didn’t read the whole thing, my bad. My cut off for young would be 30 I think.

IdblowJonSnow · 14/12/2020 22:46

Anything from 0 to 45!
Assuming the parents had their kids before they were 30.

For this generation of older parents itll be a little different.

OppsUpsSide · 14/12/2020 22:46

Under 30

Tootsietootie · 14/12/2020 22:46

Under 30 or if the parents age were in question under 60

mooncakes · 14/12/2020 22:47

Under 25.

Restorationandredecoration · 14/12/2020 22:47

Sorry, I know it’s an odd question.

Today I told a mum at the school gate that I we wouldn’t be spending Christmas with my family because I lost my parents when I was young. She then asked me how old I was when they died and when I told her she said “that’s not young!”. I was quite taken aback at the suggestion I was over dramatising.

I say it to classes (I'm an English teacher, and death comes up often!) I've only lost one parent. I was 24.

ChanklyBore · 14/12/2020 22:47

I’d say I lost both parents when I was young. One as a teenager and one in my early-mid twenties. I’d also say they died young, though that might be pushing it (late forties early fifties). I’d mean it in the sense they they were young to die not young when they died.

Poppyolive90 · 14/12/2020 22:48

How old were you? Though she was a bit rude even if you now say 50!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 14/12/2020 22:48

Depends on the context

KeyboardWorriers · 14/12/2020 22:48

Under 30 I think
