If you bought your dog when it was a puppy, how much did you pay, what breed is your dog and what year was this?

We’ve been wanting a dog for a long time now but had to wait years for us to have better jobs and a bigger house etc.
We are almost ready to add a lovely dog to our family but WOW the prices are really high.
People tel me this is due to lockdown or the time of year.
So I just wanted to gauge the prices of puppies in recent years.

Also on another note seeing how high they are makes me sad that people will take advantage of the amount of money to be made (example labradors in my part of the UK are £3,000, the average lab has 8 puppies- that’s £24k!)

I’m completely gobsmacked at what people are paying now.
I’ve shown & bred one of the very rarest breeds on the Kennel Club At Risk Native British Breeds list for over thirty years.
Before this year they were selling for £500 . When I first started I was charging £60. I refuse to have any litters while this madness is going on.

£300 in February this year. He's a Jack Russell chihuahua cross. So mongrel lol.

He's small though with small poo to have to pick up!

@midnightstar66 Lol I can't, it would totally out me... But try to imagine the cutest dog ever then times it by infinite cuteness!

I don't think I'd take the risk of trying for another in this craziness as I fear we were lucky to find what I honestly believe was a reputable breeder. I have been thinking about putting our name down for a rescue - if, as people fear, they become overrun if/when life returns to normal.

We got a Australian labradoodle at the end of august. We’d been in the waiting list for 12 months and had contractually binding price of £2,000.

We got my first choc lab in 2007 for £450
The second one (also a choc lab) we got in 2015 for £250 because the breeder was a Friend of my uncles.

JustCurious2 · 22/12/2020 10:12

We got a cockalier during lockdown for a £1000. Dosen't seem to bad judging by what pp people have paid for puppies over the last few years.

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/12/2020 10:15

£1200 18 months ago KC registered rough collie

Rescue mixed breed 2011 - rescue fees

Shih tzu, KC registered 2019 - £650

We also tried to rescue again, but with children and another dog it proved impossible.

I couldn't believe the prices for mixed breed dogs on well known pet websites, I can't understand how breeding your much loved family pet with the dog next door can warrant such prices!

£100 for my rescue staffie puppy 7 years ago. He probably isn’t a pure breed but who cares, he is the best dog ever and most £3000 puppies are mongrels too, just with a fancy name.

Mariebarrone · 22/12/2020 11:18

Rescue dogs rock

If you bought your dog as a puppy how much did you pay?
Avelandra · 22/12/2020 12:14

We got a Lab x Springer in 2017, paid £300. Now you can't get any for less than £1500Shock

TakingTheLowRoad · 22/12/2020 12:53

Re-homing a failed show terrier £0. We’ll have some costs associated with neutering him etc but that’s it. We couldn’t justify the cost of a new puppy and have been applying to rescues for six months with no luck. We’ve been in negotiations with this dog for the last two months.

Glitterb · 22/12/2020 13:00

If you know what type of dog you would like then look at the breed specific rescues

FASDE1517 · 22/12/2020 13:02

Our cockapoo was £1200 18 months ago.

PeterPanNeverLands · 22/12/2020 13:12

We paid about £250 for a rescue and paid £1000 for our lab. Both wonderful. I would not be paying the asking prices atm though. It's outrageous.

QueenofLouisiana · 22/12/2020 13:18

£50 (donation towards his food, no money asked for) for a 16 week old border collie- 13 years ago.

Juanbablo · 22/12/2020 13:22
