If you bought your dog as a puppy how much did you pay?

If you bought your dog when it was a puppy, how much did you pay, what breed is your dog and what year was this?

We’ve been wanting a dog for a long time now but had to wait years for us to have better jobs and a bigger house etc.
We are almost ready to add a lovely dog to our family but WOW the prices are really high.
People tel me this is due to lockdown or the time of year.
So I just wanted to gauge the prices of puppies in recent years.

Also on another note seeing how high they are makes me sad that people will take advantage of the amount of money to be made (example labradors in my part of the UK are £3,000, the average lab has 8 puppies- that’s £24k!)

£250 in august this year. She is a lurcher, which is a sighthound x with another breed usually a terrier or working type dog.

Both “cross breeds” so mongrels really.
2017- £200
2019- £280 and in all honesty she’s a cross that wasn’t designed at the time but I can see it coming in..she’s a French bulldog cross with a Jack Russell and she has all the lovely traits of a Frenchie but not health issues because she’s got a proper nose! Prey drive is pretty high though Grin

Designer!

Kc reg Lab last month for £2k. That was reasonable. Could have spent up to £3.5k. For those that say they make a few grand and it's daylight robbery my breeder was on 24 hour pup duty for 8 weeks. It's a full time job so I would want a bit of money for it. Also stud fees have gone up and there were health tests too.
However cocker/caverpoos and even more exotic variations not even health checked or pedigree parents not kc seem to be going for more which seems illogical to me!
On the other hand all my cats are rescues/strays.

CherryPavlova · 06/12/2020 08:30

Purview son has just paid £2.5k for a cross breed (cocker/retriever cross). Very sweet, very pretty, all tests and papers in place, mother seen.......... but a ridiculous price.

He wouldn’t listen.

Feminmister · 06/12/2020 08:32

Springer spaniel, 3 years ago, £850.

fishykettles · 06/12/2020 08:41

@MunchBunchYoghurt

Definite hike in price then. Currently can’t get any breed for less than £2000 The breed that suits us the most is £3000-£3500 at the moment.
Shock you'd think at those prices the animals would be treated like royalty yet some people buy dogs and mistreat them terribly.
vanillandhoney · 06/12/2020 08:43

@Fungster

Rescue - approximately £100 I think. Why are you considering going to a breeder when so many pups need good homes?
Because it's practically impossible to rescue a dog if you have children, cats, other dogs or any kind of job!
midnightstar66 · 06/12/2020 08:49

Only if in collusion with the owner of the stud dog, who has to confirm in writing that the mating happened. I suppose it could be straightforward forgery, but as KC publishes lineages it's one that is readily discoverable

Puppy farms will have their own studs. As I said my JRT is not Kc reg, she cannot be because she doesn't have enough white on her, this has absolutely no bearing on how well she was bred or how well the bitch is treated, indeed the fact jrts have not been and still often are not kc reg even when they qualify is probably why they are such a healthy and robust dog compared to many as the gene pool has stayed vast. I have my dogs parentage going back several generations.

My dad and his wife are retired with no other animals. Their beloved dog passed away at the beginning of this year and they’ve been looking recently to give another rescue a loving home. They’ve been turned down at a few rescues due to their age! My dad is late 60’s and his wife 10 years younger. They have a secure back garden and a lovely sized bungalow. It’s ludicrous!
Friendshighschool · 06/12/2020 09:07

Most of my friends are doggy people. We aren’t just now but we all come through the show side and several of my friends are at the top of their breed/breeding.

They have waiting lists for their puppies and haven’t increased prices.

A couple of them have chosen not to breed this year because of what’s happening price wise and the massive rush to buy puppies during lockdown. If people remove themselves from waiting lists because if it then so be it. More genuine families will join.

Thank you everyone for your replies and advice.

And @Tootsietootie that story makes me so sad. Poor pups and mother.

I do find this a bit of a weird MN attitude, tbh, that people who waited until their circumstances changed then bought a dog and spent a lot of money on it must therefore be likely to abandon or abuse it.

SurreyHillsGirl · 06/12/2020 09:39

2 cavapoochons in 2017. 1500 each from a very good ‘breeder’ (for all the tedious people, yes, I know ‘poos’ aren’t a breed 💤). Worth every penny, they are healthy, happy, clever and so loving and no sep anxiety at all. We met the gorgeous parents and siblings at the breeder’s home, left with our two gorgeous bundles feeling v reassured. One of the best decisions we have ever made.

kazza446 · 06/12/2020 09:41

Cockapoo in 2017, £600!! Prices are now through the roof!

LawnFever · 06/12/2020 09:44

Rescue puppy, £150 ish I think two years ago, mixed breed collie/Labrador cross (we think, not 100% sure)

nickyschof · 06/12/2020 10:00

Golden Lab last February £600, Black Lab 05/18 £400, Jack Russell 2007 £150.

Heatherjayne1972 · 06/12/2020 12:23

Someone at my work just paid £1300 for a Labrador!

Personally I think that’s a disgraceful amount

Welcometonowhere · 06/12/2020 12:25

Why?

zenasfuck · 06/12/2020 12:28

£650 13 years ago for a Lhasa apso puppy

200 10 years ago for a rescue Pomeranian puppy

Most recent rescue is a Japanese spitz who was free

Franticbutterfly · 06/12/2020 12:29

Cairn Terrier, almost 4 years ago from one of the KC breeders in Scotland. £650. Worth twice that, he's my baby.

Mominatrix · 06/12/2020 12:37

Purchased our cockapoo almost seven years ago for £850. To us, she was/is worth this (which is why we were willing to pay this amount the begin with!).

Anna713 · 06/12/2020 12:50

Just spent £2500 on a cocker spaniel from a local breeder. Health checked and the mother dog was lovely. It was her first and only litter or so the owner told me. Has she bred from her dog for money? Probably, but she seemed keen to ensure the pups went to good homes. I looked at rescue dogs for months but it was impossible to find a dog that was reasonably small and was ok with children. As we are in our sixties, that was a problem with some rescue centres too. I am retired and have grandchildren so I have to be sure any dog would be fine with children. I can bring my puppy up to be confident with children. I have looked at litters from kennel club members previously and dont agree this guarantees a good dog from an altruistic breeder. The last kc litter we looked at, the photos sent to us bore no resemblance to the actual puppies for sale and we walked away.

PurBal · 06/12/2020 13:49

I think MIL paid around £750 for a labrador (dog not bitch) 3 years ago.
