If you bought your dog as a puppy how much did you pay?

If you bought your dog when it was a puppy, how much did you pay, what breed is your dog and what year was this?

We’ve been wanting a dog for a long time now but had to wait years for us to have better jobs and a bigger house etc.
We are almost ready to add a lovely dog to our family but WOW the prices are really high.
People tel me this is due to lockdown or the time of year.
So I just wanted to gauge the prices of puppies in recent years.

Also on another note seeing how high they are makes me sad that people will take advantage of the amount of money to be made (example labradors in my part of the UK are £3,000, the average lab has 8 puppies- that’s £24k!)

Highly unpopular I know but a poodle cross for £800 in 2016. Recently met a lady with the same "breed" puppy for £3000. I am stopped regularly by people asking if I'm planning to breed. They look shocked when I say she's been neutered it's as if they can't believe we won't cash in on the fashion.

Minster2012 · 05/12/2020 19:23

Cockapoo also works as a beating dog in shooting season, just had big jigsaw puzzle pieces put all over him by DS 🙄

Henlie · 05/12/2020 19:23

Like you Op, we’re also hanging on until prices drop.....,they are ridiculous at the moment!

Friends of ours bought a Cavalier puppy for £2500 about 3 weeks ago......😐

JRT 2007 £150, best money I've ever spent Smile

1forAll74 · 05/12/2020 19:24

How do people arrive at charging these huge amounts of money for a puppy, whatever breed. I can never get my head around this, especially when it's thousands of pounds.. My daughter and family bought a puppy some time ago, and I didn't ask any questions about money, but looked on the internet for said breed, and it was about £2000 for this breed, I was amazed, but won't mention it, as I will be in trouble. I have had two rescue dogs in the distant past, but just have three cats now.

Not all at the same time - this is over a LOT of years.

First(roughly 1995) - 8 year old yorkie (free as we rehomed her from an elderly woman my dad visited regularly as part of his work as she sadly had to move to a nursing home) Proper little madam, such a lady!
Second (1996) - 6 year old yorkie as 'friend' for our first. £50. Sadly passed away not long after as was very poorly (unknown at the time, I'm glad we got to make her happy for her last few months)
Third (1997) - £450 Yorkie puppy (as our first had a phantom pregnancy and the vet advised it). Tallest Yorkie I've ever seen in my life, Number one could literally walk under him!
Fourth (2007) - Old boy, free rescue from a local family. We were trying to rehome through the RSPCA and they rang us to say they'd been contacted by someone who was around the corner and a few blocks up from us and if we went to collect it before they would he was ours. I don't think they'd be allowed to do this now but that little boy was my shadow! I'm so glad we got him from that place, he was so underfed and neglected. My poor baby boy!)
Fifth - (2008) £250 Border/Yorkie cross. She chose me and came and sat between my feet when we got there. Proper little diva character and so vocal and funny! Definitely the boss of the house.
Sixth - (2008) £100 (we were looking for a little friend for Number 5 to grow up with and all around where we lived was ££££ so we found this little man online. Including the return train fare he was £150. They adored each other on sight and he quite visibly grieved for her when she passed last June. So sad! :( He's currently sat behind me and snoring on my shoulder.

From what I read there's a lot of scams right now and prices are ££££ due to Corona so be careful!

CottonHeadedNinyMuggins · 05/12/2020 19:26

Forgot to say, 6 was supposed to be border terrier/border collie. He's actually AlsationxLabrador with Italian GreyhoundxWestie(!) He's 12 and half and still looks alsation puppylike!

2018 £1300 KC reg, genetic clear blue staffy

bloodywhitecat · 05/12/2020 19:33

£350 for this ratfink from Spaniel Assist Rescue and Rehoming. He was 10 weeks old when he came home in Dec 2019. The charity have been fabulous and have really helped us to keep him through some of the most trying times of our lives and we are eternally grateful to them.

Cherrysoup · 05/12/2020 19:35

£350 for a springer spaniel in 2010. Worth every penny. I’m not looking right now, thank god, because the prices are insane.

Smellbellina · 05/12/2020 19:37

£350 farm collie 2020

midnightstar66 · 05/12/2020 19:42

I bought my jack russell pup for 600 back in April. The prices were set pre covid. She'd sell for about 1.500 now. It was expensive for a jrt then but she's an unusual colour with genes for even rarer colours.

Batshitkerazy · 05/12/2020 19:47

King Charles Cavalier for £600 last summer. She was 6 months and had had a minor operation which meant she couldn’t have pups. So she was a bit cheaper than the average at the time. Love her to bits Smile

ChristmasWitch · 05/12/2020 19:47

£350 for my American Akita in 2017, £400 for my Alaskan Malamute in 2019

combatbarbie · 05/12/2020 19:51

KC reg Rhodesian Ridgeback paid €1000 (approx £800 on the then conversion) when we lived in Germany. Now back in UK.

Also facing same dilema as you OP with UK rescues with already having one dog and children so have joined some of the FB pages mentioned on here 👌

GameSetMatch · 05/12/2020 19:54

Rescue pup, £100 donation to the rescue centre. He died last year I miss him so much, his advert said ‘large puppy with little to no training’ he’d been to two other family’s who brought him back for being a chewer 🙄 apparently we were his last hope, if we took him back he was going to be destroyed as he would be classed as ‘un-rehome-able’ ’
He wasn’t even that bad for a pup as long as he had two,two hour walks a day he was fine.

msssm · 05/12/2020 19:55

2017 pomchi for £500. Sleeping on my lap as I type

itbemay1 · 05/12/2020 19:58

Jack Russel 11 years ago £250

FrolickingLemon · 05/12/2020 20:00

Cocker Spaniel with Crufts winning ancestors £800 in 2018. Used as a working dog.

I know you didn't ask about cats, but pedigree Ragdoll £150 donation to charity for a rescue in June 2020. Best money I've ever spent.

People are currently taking the piss for pedigree animals at the moment. Even more so for the 'popular' cross breeds.

Go rescue.

Terrarer · 05/12/2020 20:03

I've bred a few litters in the past 25 years as we show. Many of my peers are equally horrified by the explosion in commercial breeding, prices and also, consequently, dog theft.

Honestly, I'd avoid the selling sites like the plague. If there's a breed (and I mean breed not designer mix thing which are only ever bred commercially), you're keen on, search for the breed clubs and get in touch with the secretaries and other committee members, look up actual breeder websites. Take your time. I'm sure you'll find a reasonably priced puppy from a very good breeder that cares for their breed and good homes are their priority. Many good breeders don't advertise, they don't need to. I never have. Failing that breed rescue often has more sensible people running them than normal rescue centres.

missyB1 · 05/12/2020 20:07

£750 for our miniature schnauzer 4 years ago. Apparently they are going for 3k now!

Warmhandscoldheart · 05/12/2020 20:09

£350 from a rescue in 2015

princesspeppax · 05/12/2020 20:19

Lab cross collie, almost 2 years ago £400. We love him soooo much and he is worth that and 10x more to us Smile

MunchBunchYoghurt · 05/12/2020 20:25

It’s definitely lockdown that’s hiked the prices up then judging by the history of prices here.

Thanks for all your replies and advice.

I will absolutely keep looking to rehome a dog as a puppy isn’t essential. But as that’s been so far unlucky I will keep my eye on the prices and hope they fall.

£100 ten years ago for a crossbreed rescue puppy. Best £100 I ever spent.

Found mine through this website which advertises rescue dogs all over the UK and some international rescues to UK:
