If you bought your dog when it was a puppy, how much did you pay, what breed is your dog and what year was this?

We’ve been wanting a dog for a long time now but had to wait years for us to have better jobs and a bigger house etc.
We are almost ready to add a lovely dog to our family but WOW the prices are really high.
People tel me this is due to lockdown or the time of year.
So I just wanted to gauge the prices of puppies in recent years.

Also on another note seeing how high they are makes me sad that people will take advantage of the amount of money to be made (example labradors in my part of the UK are £3,000, the average lab has 8 puppies- that’s £24k!)

Cockapoo 2013 £800, cockapoo 2018 £900, both lovely dogs.

£700, ten years ago Lab pup, show dog/therapy dog as parents. Never again. I love him so much, but he’s cost thousands in health issues.
Rescue all the way.

Vulnerable native breed KC registered produced by a non-commercial breed enthusiast £1200 (price finalised after puppies born late 2019, she came home to us in January this year)

Last time a litter was advertised online (that I can find) was back in 2017 also at £1200, so no idea if their prices have risen with lockdown.

Best money I’ve ever spent

SilverOtter · 05/12/2020 20:31

@SendHelp30

My parents bought our Boxer 2002 - £650

I remember my grandparents saying that was extortionate. My DSis just paid £3600 for a cockapoo 😳

Oh my god! The "breeders" must have laughed all the way to the bank!! That's obscene...£3600 for a mongrelShock
SenoraSurf · 05/12/2020 20:32

Morkie (Maltese x Yorkshire terrier), 2017, £650

SilverOtter · 05/12/2020 20:33

@MaMisled

Jack Russell Shih tzu cross, 8 years ago, £250. Whoever said money can't buy you love obviously never bought a dog.
That is so true!❤️🐾

800 six years ago for a Pug (now looking between 1500 and 2000)
1500 two years ago for a Miniature Dachshund (now looking at between 3000 and 4000)

SamMil · 05/12/2020 20:35

£100 for a crossbreed over 10 years ago. He was the result of an accident!

LunaL0veg00d · 05/12/2020 20:36

£2k KC Reg. would never pay this much for a non KC reg dog. It was reassurance to me that they had been bred safely.

PixellatedPixie · 05/12/2020 20:36

In 2018 I paid £1800 for a Bouvier. My friend paid almost exactly the same for a Bernese Mountain Dog in 2017.

TheShapeJaper · 05/12/2020 20:42

2015 £500 KC registered. Probably the only dog I’ll ever have.

RooMama · 05/12/2020 20:45

2018 -£750 not kc registered
2020 - £1000 kc registered

Both are border terriers.

midnightstar66 · 05/12/2020 20:46

KC reg does not have any bearing on how safely the dog was/is bred. It just means the parents are registered pedigrees. My dog was bred in a loving home by a good friend of mine. The stud dog has been very carefully bred in a family home. She's a breed who is rarely kc reg anyway as they only recently qualified as a breed but as she's a non typical colour her and her parents do not qualify. Lots of puppy farms offer kc reg dogs.

wetotter · 05/12/2020 20:51

It just means the parents are registered pedigree

It also means the dam is between 2-6 years old, and has not had more than 3 litters. Small safeguards perhaps, but safeguards nevertheless

Tronkmanton · 05/12/2020 20:53

£750 Labrador dog puppy 2018 KC registered from friends of friends

vanillandhoney · 05/12/2020 20:55

We got our beagle in 2018. Paid £650.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 05/12/2020 20:55

£1600 for a working cocker born April this year (came home with us in June) we were on the list prior to lockdown

Hkyvvse · 05/12/2020 20:59

You get what you pay for
Both parents health checked
Excellent KC bloodlines with low coefficient
Quality food
Enrichment and time given to the tearing of puppies
8-10 weeks of dedication plus vaccinations, worming, chipping and socialising

GeorgiaGirl52 · 05/12/2020 21:02

$850 - female Pomeranian from a small breeder - 2020
(She was the cheapest of the litter because she was solid color. Her blue merle sister was $1500).

Hkyvvse · 05/12/2020 21:02

If you are breeding pure breeds KC shows the bloodlines with coefficient, some top studs may be 5th or 4th gen in both parents, KC means you can check

converseandjeans · 05/12/2020 21:19

7 years ago sprnger collie cross £80 from a farm

midnightstar66 · 05/12/2020 21:19

It also means the dam is between 2-6 years old, and has not had more than 3 litters. Small safeguards perhaps, but safeguards nevertheless

Ok but they could have other litters before, between and after and not register those pups, there is no checking if the dogs are healthy. Breed standards allow really unhealthy dogs to be produced for the sake of looks. It's also easy enough to claim a kc dog is a father when it isn't. No one checks. It really doesn't mean anything on its own at all.

Leonberger · 05/12/2020 22:10

I paid between £1200-£1500 for my KC reg leonbergers.

I don’t believe the prices if Leo’s have risen in lockdown. There are barely any litters anyway and it’s a closed off breed that’s hard to get, as I think all dogs should be to an extent. I think it’s mainly the popular and fashionable breeds that prices have risen in.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 05/12/2020 22:13

£950 for my beautiful chihuahua in May this year.
