If you bought your dog when it was a puppy, how much did you pay, what breed is your dog and what year was this?

We’ve been wanting a dog for a long time now but had to wait years for us to have better jobs and a bigger house etc.
We are almost ready to add a lovely dog to our family but WOW the prices are really high.
People tel me this is due to lockdown or the time of year.
So I just wanted to gauge the prices of puppies in recent years.

Also on another note seeing how high they are makes me sad that people will take advantage of the amount of money to be made (example labradors in my part of the UK are £3,000, the average lab has 8 puppies- that’s £24k!)

£75 council kill-pound fee for an approx 8 week old puppy, 7 years ago. Proud to not fund breeders.

@Leonberger

Aw wow Leonbergers are a beautiful breed. It’s always been my dream to have a big dog but I don’t have enough space.

Border Terrier, 2009, £350. KC registered and his parents were too, but they were working terriers on a local farm. He's still mad as a wasp at 11 years old! Best £350 we spent!

Both our pups were from breeders, both KC reg, health checked etc. 2015 Pug £750. 2018 Pointer £800. Would never pay the prices being asked now. I worry in 6-12 months the rescues will be over run 😓

Tootsietootie · 05/12/2020 23:07

Mongrels:
2002 (£50)
2003 (rescue £80)
2017 (rescue £150)
2018 (non rescue/but family pet £300)
2020 Oct (non rescue/but farm dog non breeder £300)

My DH went to a house today (paramedic) dog breeders were in there with pups separated in a different room (all crying). They explained this was to save the mum's teats so she could have another set. The pups were 4 weeks old little spaniels 😭
He checked with the RSPCA and the couple were registered and not breaking a law. He was heartbroken.

40somethingJBJ · 05/12/2020 23:18

£150 in 2008. She’s collie x poodle. Dog before that was free from a car boot sale! Prices are extortionate now.

crazycatgal · 05/12/2020 23:20

£1200 for a KC registered puppy from champion lines. That was this June after being on a waiting list, prices haven't risen with the breeder we got our dog from.

Hopingtobeamum · 06/12/2020 00:02

£850 black lab dog. Pure and solid pedigree with proven working and show bloodlines.
He's worth every penny and more. Super dog and amazing temperament. Isn't the best at picking up but I didn't buy him for that, he'll never be a proper working dog but I'm cool with that, he's my pet

ILoveYoga · 06/12/2020 00:07

American cocker spaniel 2010 £750

I waited for him because I wanted specifically a puppy bred from his father. Both parents DNA tested for any potential health issues and 5 generation pedigree, KC registered Only now that he’s considered an old dog are we having any issues and are minor, need no treatment. Best behaved dog and so loving. I wish I could clone him when the time comes to say goodbye.

GalaxyAddict · 06/12/2020 00:13

I got a Romanian rescue puppy 3 weeks ago, he is 7 months old, and so lovely. I paid £400

MuthaFunka61 · 06/12/2020 00:16

Please don't adopt a dog from overseas. There're diseases and parasites which are brought over and spread to other dogs which UK vets are struggling to control and treat.

There's many articles written about this.

TheNationsFavourite · 06/12/2020 00:23

We got our mini poodle/retriever cross a year ago tomorrow, bred by a retired nurse from her own dogs. We drove a long way for him!
We paid £700, he's black and they're not as popular as the golden ones. They are all around the £3k mark now.

Our previous pup was a Jack russell/poodle cross and he was £350 14 years ago.

Happymum12345 · 06/12/2020 00:26

Cockapoo £800 two years ago

Fudgecakes · 06/12/2020 00:33

imamearcat · 06/12/2020 00:45

Popcorninmymouth · 06/12/2020 00:54

Jack russell poodle cross, a Jackapoo, £600 in Oct 2020.

Madwife123 · 06/12/2020 01:08

£80 for a Rottie puppy from rescue in 2008, he came vaccinated, chipped and with a neutering voucher. Still going strong today. Absolute bargain!

Madwife123 · 06/12/2020 01:11

If you wait till the new year you will find the rescues full of these post Xmas covid puppies as well.

Buy from someone who shows and breeds dogs professionally because they love that particular breed, and sells the puppies that aren’t show quality so they can cover their costs. Don’t buy from someone who breeds and sells for profit. Anyone who’s breeding dogs properly doesn’t make a profit from it.
