If you bought your dog as a puppy how much did you pay?

If you bought your dog when it was a puppy, how much did you pay, what breed is your dog and what year was this?

We’ve been wanting a dog for a long time now but had to wait years for us to have better jobs and a bigger house etc.
We are almost ready to add a lovely dog to our family but WOW the prices are really high.
People tel me this is due to lockdown or the time of year.
So I just wanted to gauge the prices of puppies in recent years.

Also on another note seeing how high they are makes me sad that people will take advantage of the amount of money to be made (example labradors in my part of the UK are £3,000, the average lab has 8 puppies- that’s £24k!)

Golden retriever $5000 and standard poodle $5000 2020.

Dogs are crazy expensive in Aus ATM

sergeilavrov · 06/12/2020 03:57

February 2019, equivalent of £50 for a Jack Russell Chihuahua mix. She was 4 months old. Didn’t include neutering or vaccines, that cost was on us. Most annoying member of our family including our toddlers, but love her.

Zoflorabore · 06/12/2020 04:03

Siberian Husky- November 2020, £2,000

We were looking to get one earlier in the year but didn’t and they were averaging £750-1,000. The hike in price this year is truly shocking.

if you cannot get a rescue because of lock down and prices have spiked for the same reason then wait. You have waited already and dogs will cost in medical care, food, and whatnot. The vaccine is here so there is light.

Zoflorabore · 06/12/2020 04:03

sorry forgot to add he was almost 8 weeks old.

Worriedandabitscared · 06/12/2020 04:06

I paid £650 for a pug in 2019 and then £550 for a Welsh springer spaniel in 2019 too

Welcometonowhere · 06/12/2020 04:12

I’m not as convinced as some that prices will come down. Gradually, possibly, over a period of years, but certainly not any time soon.

It is simply the case, and it always was, that people pay what something is worth. Whether someone else thinks it’s worth it, isn’t the point.

Anyone who’s breeding dogs properly doesn’t make a profit from it.

Hmm again, this is the saint-like breeder MN knows. In the real world, most breeders will make a few thousand from their litters. And that is fine.

Hkyvvse · 06/12/2020 04:41

@midnightstar66

It also means the dam is between 2-6 years old, and has not had more than 3 litters. Small safeguards perhaps, but safeguards nevertheless

Ok but they could have other litters before, between and after and not register those pups, there is no checking if the dogs are healthy. Breed standards allow really unhealthy dogs to be produced for the sake of looks. It's also easy enough to claim a kc dog is a father when it isn't. No one checks. It really doesn't mean anything on its own at all.

To have a KC puppy with certificate the parents must be both registered as you need their numbers to register the litter.

If your paying thousands you would check

Onedropbeat · 06/12/2020 04:48

2013 -Vizsla £1000

Skipsurvey · 06/12/2020 05:07

Jack Russell 2013 £250

Fungster · 06/12/2020 05:08

Rescue - approximately £100 I think. Why are you considering going to a breeder when so many pups need good homes?

Fungster · 06/12/2020 05:14

I've just read the full thread. It's insane to me that having children and/or another dog should automatically disqualify you from rescuing another (unless the rescue dog has had previous trauma of course). Good luck with your search for a rescue - I hope you find a great dog soon!

Yes but it's not hard to claim pups are sired by a certain dog when they are in fact not. they do not Dna match the dogs. And there's nothing to say they can't have litters they don't register to keep to the kc allowed amount. They'll still make money from a non kc litter. They allow dogs such as french bull dogs to continue being bred with more and more issues. They don't inspect owners. Having a KC cert is not alone any guarantee of anything apart from the breed of your puppy.

Probably because there are very stringent rules about rescuing. We were refused a rescue because we both worked full time, even though DH was at home three days a week and the other 2 days my MIL would look after the dog. We tried for ages to get a rescue but in the end got a puppy (he’s 10 now).
AlwaysBehindTheCurve · 06/12/2020 07:37

Got a puppy from a breeder I mean.

rottiemum88 · 06/12/2020 07:44

£950 for my KC registered Rottweilers, one in 2014 and one in 2015. I didn't pay for their breeding rights, which would have increased the price for to £3k(ish).

Whatohbertram · 06/12/2020 07:46

£40 - he is a Plummer Terrier but he is black & white and Plummer Terriers are meant to be brown & white (all his siblings were) so he was in the bargain bucket - best buy ever, I love him to bits.

Sunflowergirl1 · 06/12/2020 07:47

I suspect once we get to April and Covid measures reduce, the rescue kennels will be overflowing with dogs. Will be like xmas on steroids

nokia3210567 · 06/12/2020 07:49

2012, black Labrador, working lines, kennel club assured breeder with all papers. £550. Astonished at the prices of puppies nowadays 😨

wetotter · 06/12/2020 07:58

Only if in collusion with the owner of the stud dog, who has to confirm in writing that the mating happened. I suppose it could be straightforward forgery, but as KC publishes lineages it's one that is readily discoverable

MaryBoBary · 06/12/2020 07:58

We bought a whippet in summer 2014 and he cost us £200

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 06/12/2020 08:01

SBT 2014 £700 / 2017 £1000

No way would I pay the 2.5k/3k that they are charging now when in Feb they were half that.

LST · 06/12/2020 08:02

100 quid off a farm in Buxton. The farmer needed another sheep dog. Chose the best one then sold the rest.

im5050 · 06/12/2020 08:03

Not me but my sister but a french bulldog in April
£3000
He is absolutely adorable but she has to wipe his ass and gets pooh crumbs as he can’t get to his ass himself 😂
I would not pay that sort of money and gave to wipe a dogs ass 😂

EggBobbin · 06/12/2020 08:03

Kc registered springer spaniel (now deceased) in 2000 for £400

Kc registered working cocker in 2016 for £700.

Absolutely gobsmacked to see even working lines from reputable breeders locally advertised at £1800 and more. These are breeders we looked at 5 years ago for £600-800. Ddog’s breeder hasn’t had any litters for 2 years. They’re family dogs so they don’t do them every year anyway and decided not to do it this year as we’re worried people’s jobs/lifestyles would change after they got the pups.
