Life Changing Cleaning - Why Didn't I Know?

I can't believe I didn't know about rubber brooms before now! No word of a lie, it has changed my life - picks up dog fur from the stairs better than any hoover. My carpet is like new. This, after spending £s on Dyson. Anyone else got any brilliant cleaning tips?

You can pull the compartment out completely. There should be a little clip you push down so you can do this.
Then soak/scrub in the sink or stick it in the dishwasher.

@longtompot

How do you all clean the compartment the washing powder and fabric conditioner slides in and out of? I've just noticed mine is awful, despite meant to be a non moulding one. I was wondering if a steam cleaner would work? I've cleaned the powder buildup before but it is really tricky. I've currently got a machine cleaner in the drum but I don't think that will touch the drawer.
hardly ever as I don't use softener very often and put powder directly into the drum.

but if I need to, I take out the drawer and put it in the dishwasher.

I might get one myself as my hair is thick and falls out constantly 😕

@BluTangClan & @pinkbalconyrailing not that bit, but the bit that slides into that's part of the washing machine. I can take out the dispenser and clean that, done many times. It's just where the water sprays into the powder and fabric conditioner.

On the roof of the empty space left by soap dispenser I use an old tooth brush dipped in boiling water, carried to machine in a cup, to clean the water jets.

Beach sand? Talc as PP said. Never go to the beach without it. Dries off soggy feet and removes every trace of sand. It's the only thing I use it for.

What a nice bit of nostalgia - when I first started using MN in 2004 I got the brick acid tip and it sorted a disgusting loo in a rented house brilliantly 😁

Also have used the dishwasher tab on oven door tip but will be upgrading to 80° warm-up and a scraper now 😁

Not strictly a ‘how do I clean X’ tip, but all those years ago there was a bloke who worked with washing machines on MN and he said, you only really need half the powder they recommend. I’ve been doing that for 16 years and I’ve never once thought, oh, that wasn’t enough powder.

I too use about half the recommended washing powder. Touch wood, never had any washing machine issues despite being in a hard water area. Clothes always come out smelling fresh and clean. I do chuck in some soda crystals in addition to the powder when doing a white wash.
However, I do have a timescale issue on the sides of the toilet where the water runs down repeatedly. No problem with the bowl, that comes up fine with bleach. I got some stuff that was highly recommended at Screwfix, did absolutely zilchSad. I feel it needs a gel or paste so it stays in place for a bit rather than just runs into the pan. Any ideas???

I'd recommend Kilrock gel for any limescale; I even use it on the plastic surround of the dogs drinking fountain. It comes in a jar with a brush in the lid for applying it, and clings very well.

That's sounds worth a go, just the right sort of thing. Thank you.

Oven Mate. I posted this up thread. It is the bees knees. Brush it on & wipe off with cold water. It is fantastic, no effort needed. Works on the shelves as well, it makes your oven look like new with no effort whatsoever. Don't waste time rubbing with dish washer tablets or anything else.

Ok you clever people, any suggestions as to how you would clean a patch on a cream linen headboard that is marked by a head touching it too often? The headboard doesn't detach from the bed so I can't reupholster and I really like the bed. Grrr - bloody husband's fault for sitting up & reading in bed!! Wink

CarpeVitam
It worked, I rubbed with white flannel and the cleaner, then a clean wet flannel and its lovely. In places I used Vanish carpet spray to remove the cleaner because I panicked a bit. Try in the corner you dont look at first, my carpet is a creamy white, cream! all over now yipeee 🥳 no grubby bit under the window

peridito · 09/12/2020 17:36

wow @Ddot - fab news that it worked .Might get some myself !

Ddot · 09/12/2020 19:35

Try wet wipes first, very good at cleaning faux suede, so may help. Or try boiled water mixed with table spoon of clothes washing powder, (colour) white flannel wrung out as much as possible and scrub. You will need a couple of pairs of washing up gloves, for heat.

Ddot · 09/12/2020 19:36

If that dont work cover with new fabric, Google how to

Ddot · 09/12/2020 19:38

You can upholstery by making a detachable cover like a pillowcase, take off to wash

GrimDamnFanjo · 10/12/2020 01:26

Can anyone help re getting marks off the arms of chairs? I'll never buy a yellow armchair again..

tobee · 10/12/2020 03:02

Tried the fabric conditioner to clean my mirrors. Think I've put to much in and it's a bit streaky. I've tried wiping with wet with water only cloth. But still streaky. What else should I do please?

tobee · 10/12/2020 03:03

To be clear, I originally used water with conditioner but must have used too much conditioner

Blastandbollocks · 10/12/2020 05:46

Wipe with a cloth soaked in washing up liquid - cuts through the greasy residue.

Ddot · 10/12/2020 06:37

As above then use paper to shine

@Ddot Wow, that's sounds like a fantastic result, thanks for letting me know! 😊

I'm still awaiting delivery, well re-delivery. RM damaged my last package! 🙄

BaileysAndIceForOneplease · 10/12/2020 08:52

My dad bought a carpet rake years ago because I had long hair and quite a few vacuum cleaners were nearly ruined when the bar wouldn't turn and the motor burned out.

Rake the carpet, and check your beater bar regularly, you'll be glad you did.
