Life Changing Cleaning - Why Didn't I Know?

I can't believe I didn't know about rubber brooms before now! No word of a lie, it has changed my life - picks up dog fur from the stairs better than any hoover. My carpet is like new. This, after spending £s on Dyson. Anyone else got any brilliant cleaning tips?

Laurolii Please be gentle, it can go terrible wrong
Ooh will do - what can go wrong??

Thank you!

With the discoloration of the edges of carpets I can only think of getting some kind of solid edging/trim fixed between carpet and skirting .

This one looks cheap and tacky ,but I love the idea that it could also disguise cables .I'm sure there are better ,solid alternatives .

I have the same problem and I'm sure it's dirt rising from under the floorboards and that it will continue .

@BarbaraofSeville

I find that if I shuffle my feet back and forth on the rug while wearing my slippers, which have a rough rubber sole, they bring up alarming amounts of cat hair.

I discovered this when standing up after my fitness watch beeped because it thought I had been sitting down too long. This is now part of my daily routine while WFH and there appears to be endless amounts of cat hair on that rug, I'm surprised there is still any on their bodies.

Mine still has lots of fur even though I pick up seemingly sack fulls a week!

Already asked for that my cream carpet is the same, seems to be worse in old homes

Ddot · 24/11/2020 13:47

Laurolii
Could take too much off, I expect it's like Tcut for cars and removes a small amount of surface. Only work for light scratching. Please Google before you begin

Ddot · 24/11/2020 13:49

Old homes which had open fires seem to be worse for edge staining on carpets.

nevernotstruggling · 24/11/2020 13:53

I tried the baking soda toothpaste on my ray bans. Sad to say it didn't work but it did make them very clean and made the scratch look less obvious ❤️

CherryRipe1 · 24/11/2020 14:00

Try toothpaste with bicarb in it or a paste of denture cleaner first off. I've also got rid of tea stains from a white laminate worktop using thick bleach but it went yellow, however this eventually faded & went after scrubbing with fairy liquid. I got rid of black scuff marks on some white faux leather shoes using acetone nail polish remover & literally nothing worked but this. Test small areas & proceed with caution!

TheLadyGrayson · 24/11/2020 14:11

Hijacking slightly but you guys seem to be the people in the know.. Can anyone recommend an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner?

Astonish Mould & Mildew Blaster - makes short work of black grout in the shower

Yep, it's brilliant. Just spray and leave with the windows open and then rinse it off in about half an hour. It works on all kind of mouldy bits in our damp bathroom.

I discovered a great tip at the weekend for cleaning radiators. Make up a solution of hot water and washing powder (I did about a tablespoon of powder into a litre of water), then pour it slowly into the radiator. When it runs through, it'll bring all the dust and cobwebs with it. Obviously, put a tub under the radiator to catch the dirty water and you'll need towels underneath too. I've only done the kitchen radiator so far as I wanted to try it on tiled floor and I'm glad I did as the floor did get quite wet! It worked a treat though, the water that I collected was satisfyingly minging.

CherryRipe1 · 24/11/2020 14:30

Try white sliced bread (ladder alert!). Push well onto ceiling until a bit doughy then remove & repeat using other side. Might take a while!

Laurolii · 24/11/2020 14:33

@Ddot ah I see. Never heard of Tcut but I have been enlightened now! Thanks!

@bigchanges1

Does anyone have any tips for cleaning a dark grey composite sink please? I’ve tried bicarbonate with vinegar & then Cif, but it’s just not coming up clean Confused
We inherited a black composite with the house. Awful thing, so glad to see it go. When it was here though I found the best way of making it look decent was to rub coconut oil onto the surface and buff. Veg oil works the same. Protected it for about a week.
Notusuallydown · 24/11/2020 15:36

We have a carpet over a wood floor, it needs cleaning, any ideas please? I can't use a 'wet' cleaner?

Flatpackback · 24/11/2020 15:41

Don’t be tempted to use dry powder carpet cleaner, awful stuff. Gunked up my newish hoover and the didn’t make the carpet look any better. Id go for cleaning it with a bucket of the old 1001 dry foam and a sponge, if it’s still available or some equivalent.

Ddot · 24/11/2020 15:52

Cleaning stair carpet, washing powder for coloured clothes. Pour boiling water over two heaped tablespoons and stir till dissolved. Put two pairs of rubber gloves on. Use white flannel, wring out as much water as possible and scrub. Lovely clean stairs nice smell and a good workout

knittingaddict · 24/11/2020 16:10

I'm sure this has already been recommended, but no harm in repeating it, Dr Beckmann carpet stain remover is amazing. We got some when my husband spilt red wine on our fairly new beige carpet. It got all the marks out and you wouldn't know it had ever happened.

I've also needed to get an oil stain out of a sofa bed cover this week The cover was white and the oil was almond oil, I think. I used the Dr Beckmann and cleaned it with a damp cloth. You could still see the mark, but it was much more faint. In the morning, after it had dried, the stain had vanished completely. Not a sign of it. It's wonderful stuff.

While I'm here I have a tip for cleaning oven shelves, but it does need a butler sink or similar. I'm a bit of a slob, so the oven only gets cleaned once a year. I fill the sink with hot water, add lots of biological washing powder (the cheapest you can find) and put the metal shelves in to soak overnight. In the morning give them a quick rub down with those wire scrubbers. It needs hardly any effort or elbow grease and look like new afterwards.

formerbabe · 24/11/2020 16:18

Does anyone have a good tip to clean shoelaces? I've been soaking them in washing powder and washing up liquid but can't get rid of the grey stains...I'd stick them in bleach but they're pink rather than white.

knittingaddict · 24/11/2020 16:24

Stick them in one of those net bags and put them in the washing machine with the next load.

formerbabe · 24/11/2020 16:28

Thanks @knittingaddict. Will give it a go

knittingaddict · 24/11/2020 16:30

Hope it works. I have no specialist knowledge, but it's what I would do.

formerbabe · 24/11/2020 16:40

I don't have a net bag so will stick them in a pillow case...I think though that stains on laces in probably really ground in as been on it for ages...Will see!

81Byerley · 24/11/2020 17:02

@PiggyPokkyFool I recently bought a Eufy. I put my old Roomba upstairs. The Eufy is much better. Though it doesn't come with a virtual wall like the Roomba.

PiggyPokkyFool · 24/11/2020 17:11

what model did you buy @81Byerley? Thank you
