I'm not remotely religious so asking this question probably makes me a hypocrite but anyway. Most of us were exposed to the rite-of-passage primary school dirges such as When A Knight Won His Spurs (I'm not sure that's even a hymn) and The Golden Cockerel but I'd be surprised if the likes of these featured in a Christian Church service. But, to answer my own question, I think Abide With Me is my favourite, followed closely by Morning Has Broken. I concede these might be popular choices but I don't know that many hymns to begin with Halo.

Had completely forgotten My Song Is Love Unknown, till I saw it mentioned on here. Used to love that one.

willieversleep · 10/11/2020 22:17

Oh and to god be the glory and great is thy faithfulness

OublietteBravo · 10/11/2020 22:17

The one hymn that I really, really hate is Love devine, all loves excelling - it’s just about acceptable at a funeral, but why do people pick such a horrible hymn for their weddings?

Inherited my mums hymn books - couldn’t bear to get rid of them. In a box somewhere. I may just have to dig them out!
Great thread.

Walk with me Oh my Lord , Oh Mary we crown thee and Ave Maria .

WitsEnding · 10/11/2020 22:25

Praise my Soul the King of Heaven, and Tell out My Soul.

Oh I have found my people!!!
I absolutely love hymns, I find they calm my mind and can make me feel very emotional depending on the associations. My children go to a church school and they (pre covid) sang daily.

I have a separate hymns playlist on Spotify!!

My favourites are

Seek ye first
Servant king
Be still for the presence of the lord
The power of your love
Here I am lord
How great thou art
Dear lord and father of mankind
My Jesus, my saviour
Shout to the lord
Lord of all hopefulness
Majesty
Oh Jesus I have promised
ABBA father
Shine Jesus Jesus

I'm sure there are more

shartsi · 10/11/2020 22:28

Trust and Obey
Shine Jesus shine
Guide me o though great redeemer
O come all ye faithful

Hailtomyteeth · 10/11/2020 22:28

@WitsEnding
Those are both great hymns!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 10/11/2020 22:30

Are any or all of these hymns particular to certain branches of Christianity or are they inter-denominational ?

What sort of music, if any, is performed in synagogues and mosques ?

The ones I like is usually sung in my Baptist (free will/born again type as I know there are Calvinist baptists)

I've already shared my favourites, but others' mentions of hymns they dislike reminds me of a song at primary school that I loathed. It was basically a listing of lots of kinds of childish misbehaviour, then saying that when you do these you should turn to God 'just for a change'.

Little Miriel thought that was very theologically unsound because there are reasons to turn to God when you've done wrong but just fancying a change isn't one of them, and it really shouldn't be that unusual and the bad behaviour that common. Grin

DrCoconut · 10/11/2020 22:37

Some of it depends on the tune. Like "And can it be" needs to be Sagina. Love divine - Blaenwern. While shepherds watched - Cranbrook. The hymns for my 3 DC's christenings were carefully chosen for their words according to the situation or how I was feeling at the time. One more step along the world I go for DS1. I'd recently left his father and we were literally going from the old things to the new. Praise to the lord, (the almighty the king of creation) for DS2. It's majestic and talks about being protected and looked after. Now thank we all our God for DS3, talks about being blessed from our mothers arms, and beyond.

BlueDaysTillChristmas · 10/11/2020 22:38

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.

Is there any line more perfect than ‘Forgive our foolish sins’?

CandyflossKid · 10/11/2020 22:41

'Oh Jesus I have promised' think there are 2 tunes to it but always remember when I worked in a Reception class and we used to sing this in the School Assembly and the whole class of 4 and 5 year olds would spontaneously bob up and down to the more upbeat tune

Wildswim · 10/11/2020 22:43

And can it be
Crown him with many crowns
Praise my soul the king of heaven
Great is thy faithfulness
Be thou my vision
A mighty fortress is our God
He is exalted
How great thou art
The servant king
Shine Jesus shine
Good good father

heartpyjamas · 10/11/2020 22:44

Thorns in the Straw
Do Not Be Afraid

hedwigismyowl · 10/11/2020 22:46

My favourite ones are:
In Christ alone
Cornerstone
10000 reasons
How great thou art
The Lord's my shepherd (Stuart Townsend)
Crown him with many crowns
White flag
The summons
There is a hope
Be still my soul
Oceans (where feet may fall)
This I believe (the creed)

My favourite Christmas carol is Hark the herald angels sing, cos of the links to the OT passages

I know the words to so many hymns and worship songs and I prefer uplifting ones and not dirges!

SpikeDearheart · 10/11/2020 22:47

Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation
Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken
Come Down, O Love Divine
Of The Father's Love Begotten
This Is The Truth Sent From Above
This Joyful Eastertide
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

LionLily · 10/11/2020 22:49

He who would valiant be
Lord of all Hopefulness

When I was at primary school I loved Lord of the Dance, only problem was I heard it as '...dance, dance, wherever you may be, I am the lord of the dance settee...'. I was always confused as to how you could be dancing whilst sitting on the sofa.

At Xmas I love the hymns, all the hymns. Especially We Three Kings...always end up in a competition with my sister over the most impressive 'wo-hooooooooo'.

ichoosewinetoomuch · 10/11/2020 22:51

@jennytheonionslayer

No, no I don't.
Thanks for that
ghislaine · 10/11/2020 22:56

Onward Christian Soldiers is another one I love to sing but don’t hear much anymore.

movingonup20 · 10/11/2020 22:57

Lord of all hopefulness, angel-voices ever singing, and a soft spot for onward Christian soldiers

movingonup20 · 10/11/2020 22:58

I miss hymn singing, banned since March Sad
