Do you have a favourite hymn or hymns ?

I'm not remotely religious so asking this question probably makes me a hypocrite but anyway. Most of us were exposed to the rite-of-passage primary school dirges such as When A Knight Won His Spurs (I'm not sure that's even a hymn) and The Golden Cockerel but I'd be surprised if the likes of these featured in a Christian Church service. But, to answer my own question, I think Abide With Me is my favourite, followed closely by Morning Has Broken. I concede these might be popular choices but I don't know that many hymns to begin with Halo.

There's a hymn about Mary called 'Queen of the May'. I went to Catholic school, but they seemed to sing more modern ones then. My gran taught me that one and I used to think it was so pretty. Also, 'How great thou art', that was one of her favourites And 'Ave Maria'.

SpeedofaSloth · 13/11/2020 21:06

All that I am, and Make me a channel of your peace.

DM had Abide with me at her funeral, it is really quite beautiful too.

SpeedofaSloth · 13/11/2020 21:07

Oh, Queen of the May - I remember that from primary school.

Oh there's so many I like. Favourites are:
Praise my soul the king of heaven
Abide with me

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 13/11/2020 21:32

Atheist here too but work in a Christian school- so many favourites but frankly mostly ANY OF THEM create a lump in my throat when you hear small children singing. We all miss it so much this year.
Favourites include
Mary did you know (sob)
My lighthouse
Lord I lift your name on high
Carols like it was on a starry night
Harvest samba for something fun

PainintheholeSIL · 13/11/2020 21:34

I'm Irish and catholic. Some of my favourites are
Hail redeemer,
Soul of my saviour
Faith of our fathers
Be not afraid
Ag Chriost An Siol
In bread we bring you Lord
When creation was begun
I am the bread of life
Nearer my God to thee
Here I am Lord
This is the day

I have loads more😂 but mostly Latin that I can sing but not spell

Great thread @WildRosie

Catholic upbringing:

Soul of my Saviour
O Sanctissima
Bring Flowers of the Rarest (O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today, queen of the angels and queen of the May)

When I was getting married (in a CoE church) and needed to choose hymns for the service I had to borrow a hymn book from the vicar and get the ladies I worked with sing them to me - I only knew RC hymns.

AnneElliott · 13/11/2020 21:56

The favourite at my CofE school was O Jesus I have promised which was 144 in the Come and Praise hymn book.

We had hymns every day and hymn practise on Fridays which is where I think I get the love of hymns from.

Ellmau · 13/11/2020 22:00

And Can It Be
My Song Is Love Unknown
I Cannot Tell Why He Whom Angels Worship
I The Lord Of Sea And Sky

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/11/2020 23:37

Lots already mentioned, and

Eternal Father Strong to Save (For those in peril on the sea) - my ex RN DF’s favourite - it was played at his funeral.

Lardlizard · 13/11/2020 23:39

Ave Maria and make me a channel of your peace

Lardlizard · 13/11/2020 23:42

I also like next to me and stormzy blinded by your grace and to me I feel like it’s a celebration of god and it a hymn to me

DahliaMacNamara · 13/11/2020 23:43

Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken.
I'm also a sucker for One More Step Along The World I Go at primary school leaving assemblies.

Strokethefurrywall · 14/11/2020 00:31

I Watch The Sunrise by John Glynn.

I always loved it as a kid and I remember waking at 5am on the morning my brother died, knowing he'd be leaving us in a few short hours. I was in a side room at Royal Marsden and the sun was just starting to rise. The words to that hymn were the first thing to come into my mind and never left me.

I still love it now, even though it hurts to sing.

Morning has broken

LazyLucille · 14/11/2020 01:37

In not religious but I love colours of day, regular burst out with it and have requested it to be played at my funeral.

I like the paintbox song at the harvest festival, not sure if it's a hymn?

God made everything is quite jolly too.

RedRec · 14/11/2020 14:00

My post with link below was mainly for the benefit of the pp who mentioned the Paintbox song / hymn (Cauliflowers Fluffy) but think a few of you might appreciate it!

WildRosie · 14/11/2020 16:29

'He's Got The Whole World In His Hands'. Just thought of this one - a little too happy clappy to be a hymn. It probably still turns up in school assemblies somewhere.

I didn't recognise 'Tell out my soul', so I YouTubed it- and - you're all wrong! 😂

That tune is 'Far round the world, thy children sing thy song'!

I think the CofE did a probably necessary purge of patriarchal hymns. The idea that everyone is on the same hymn sheet. Which is why I don't recognise these lyrics to 'Far round the world'!

Other casualties are:

Hills of the north rejoice!
Onward Christian Soodiers.

Miljea · 22/11/2020 18:49
@MostIneptThatEverStepped I have messaged Neil Hannon & asked him to make an album of hymns. Have offered my mother's Presbyterian traybakes for the album launch.

If you don't ask you don't get 😂. I'll let you know if he's up for it
A proper Protestant Tray Bake?.... 😂

Miljea · 22/11/2020 18:50

@BrassicaBabe

Some absolutely amazing hymns here. Might have to create myself a hymn playlist on the back of this.

Have we had..
Oh for a thousand tongues to sing my great redeemers praise.

(Jerusalem. An anthem. Not a hymn. Great anthem. But definitely an anthem Grin)

You're right re: Jerusalem, an anthem, not a hymn.
