I'm not remotely religious so asking this question probably makes me a hypocrite but anyway. Most of us were exposed to the rite-of-passage primary school dirges such as When A Knight Won His Spurs (I'm not sure that's even a hymn) and The Golden Cockerel but I'd be surprised if the likes of these featured in a Christian Church service. But, to answer my own question, I think Abide With Me is my favourite, followed closely by Morning Has Broken. I concede these might be popular choices but I don't know that many hymns to begin with Halo.

@ParkheadParadise these are Catholic school belters, for sure!

I think mine is Mighty to Save.

Oblomov20 · 10/11/2020 21:49

Reading with interest. When I do occasionally go to church there are certain hymns I adore.

Lord of all hopefulness
I vow to thee my country
Lord of the dance
One more step along the world I go
Jerusalem
How Great thou art

Love a good sing song of those!

Chimchar · 10/11/2020 21:52

I'm welsh. Predictably maybe, I just love Calon Lan. Makes me weepy when sung by an old fashioned male voice choir.

Gwahoddiad is lovely. Myfanwy (it's sung at the end of Twin Town).
And also Bread of heaven.

Love Breathe on me breath of God, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, Jerusalem, Shine Jesus Shine, and many more. My local church rarely sings these older hymns I remember from my childhood and it makes me sad.

YolandiFuckinVisser · 10/11/2020 21:55

Jerusalem.

I'm not a Christian but I used to play in a brass band, we played a lot of hymn tunes from a small green Salvation Army book. There was also a Christmas one in red. If I hear a hymn or traditional carol even now I hum "my" part (2nd tenor horn so not very exciting and never the actual tune)

ShowOfHands · 10/11/2020 21:55

I'm not religious at all. Not a jot. But Abide With Me makes me howl. And I cry at nothing. Why is that?

Sheknowsaboutme · 10/11/2020 21:55

Im not familiar with many English versions, but Welsh ones. Could be used in both languages but I’m not sure

Cwm Rhondda (guide me)
Calon Lan
Suo Gân
Ar hyd y nôs
Myfanwy
Mi glywais dyner lais

Katjolo · 10/11/2020 21:56

Lord of the Dance. Love this hymn!

TartanDMs · 10/11/2020 21:56

I love a good hymn despite being an atheist. The only one I don't like (mainly because I can't sing it) is O Valiant Hearts.

Rodders92 · 10/11/2020 21:57

I vow to thee my country for me as well

Jonsnowscodpiece · 10/11/2020 21:57

What a great thread, loving the trip down memory lane.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 10/11/2020 21:58

Ar Hyd Y Nôs is a lovely hymn, one of the two songs I know in Welsh thanks to my grandad. (The other one is a silly song about counting goats)

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 10/11/2020 22:01

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind - love it & love singing it....sadly not a regular church goer these days though...

willieversleep · 10/11/2020 22:02

In Christ alone
Amazing grace
Be thou my vision

Oblomov20 · 10/11/2020 22:02

Lord of the dance
Sing Hosanna
Shine Jesus Shine

unmarkedbythat · 10/11/2020 22:03

I'm not religious either. Is Lord of the Dance a hymn? I love that. Abide With Me is beautiful. A lot of the Christmas ones I have a real soft spot for, O Come All Ye Faithful, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Hark! The Herald Angel's Sing, etc.

Not remotely religious, but the one I remember best from school is When a Knight Won His Spurs.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 10/11/2020 22:04

Oh, I vow to thee my Country, sprung to mind first but very sadly I find the words stick in my throat now....so very much not currently proud of this sceptered isle☹️

Jennyz123 · 10/11/2020 22:04

Great thread! My childhood was very religious but I am as atheist as they come these days. But when I was on my knees in the early days with my colicky newborn the only thing that seemed to calm us both down was singing hymn after hymn whilst pacing up and down in the dark! Funny how they were right there at the back of my mind and were the first thing to rise to my addled mind. My (and the baby's!) faves were And Can It Be, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, How Great Thou Art and Guide Me Oh Thou Great Jehovah. Interesting that they seem to be common choices on here - all stone cold bangers obviously!

ParkheadParadise · 10/11/2020 22:05

@Firstbornunicorn
I still know every word of those hymns, all these years later.
🤣🤣🤣

SpikeDearheart · 10/11/2020 22:05

All my favourites have been mentioned.
Pilgrim
Oh Jesus I have promised
Lord of all hopefullness
Vow to thee my country
At the name of Jesus
Good old ancient and modern hymn book at school 😁
but there was one that made my heart sink when we had to sing it at school, it started 'when through the whirl of wheels and engines humming' I don't know why it freaked me out but it did, never heard it since I left school over 40 years ago but just thinking about it has bought back the dread I felt when we had to sing it!
