I'm not remotely religious so asking this question probably makes me a hypocrite but anyway. Most of us were exposed to the rite-of-passage primary school dirges such as When A Knight Won His Spurs (I'm not sure that's even a hymn) and The Golden Cockerel but I'd be surprised if the likes of these featured in a Christian Church service. But, to answer my own question, I think Abide With Me is my favourite, followed closely by Morning Has Broken. I concede these might be popular choices but I don't know that many hymns to begin with Halo.

Mine is "here I am Lord"

Here I am, Lord
Is it I, Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night
I will go, Lord
If You lead me
I will hold Your people in my heart

It was sung at my grandmothers funereal and both kids holy communion, always makes me feel a bit tearful

I am an atheist but as a child sang in a church choir.
I bloody love hymns and pretty much all church music - love organs. Was just listening to Widors tocatta earlier!
I don’t partic like some of the more jaunty ones like all thing bright and beautiful.
Sang my heart out at both parent’s funerals. Felt good.

@Mollscroll

To be a pilgrim
At the name of Jesus
Dear Lord and father of mankind
Bread of Heaven

Excellent choices

Dear Lord and father of mankind and Guide me Oh thou Great Redeemer (Bread of Heaven) are my favourites, along with
I Vow to Thee My Country
Oh Jesus I have promised.

Love Divine All Loves Excelling is one of my favourites that hasn't been mentioned yet.

I learned so many at my C of E primary & secondary schools back in the 70s and I'm still word perfect on most of them to this day.

Funnily enough I'm not the slightest bit religious but I love hymns.

Tezza1 · 10/11/2020 20:50

Canticle of the sun (All creatures of our God and King) by Saint Francis of Assisi. But it has to be sung in the lively fashion, not dirge like.

Doesn't hurt that I like Saint Francis of Assisi a great deal and I love the emotions expressed in this hymn.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 10/11/2020 20:52

In Christ Alone

nevergoingoutagain · 10/11/2020 20:54

One more step along the world I go.

buckeejit · 10/11/2020 20:58

Be thou my vision
How great thou art
Amazing grace
The day thou gavest Lord is over
In Christ Alone
Will your anchor hold

Probably loads more.

I LOVE hymns but not so much the Presbyterian culture where they were all ingrained

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/11/2020 20:59

I vow to thee my country

It's a bit nationalistic, but the music is beautiful and powerful

NannyR · 10/11/2020 21:01

It's interesting to think about what makes hymns different from modern worship music - in our church we have the classic old hymns with the organ and more modern stuff like Hillsong, Matt Redman, Rend Collective with a worship band, but we also do the classics with the guitars, fiddle, drums sometimes and it brings new life to them. There are also some modern worship songs that I would class as a hymn - In Christ Alone springs to mind.
I think that what makes a hymn a hymn is it's timeless quality - some have been sung in churches for over a hundred years and will probably still be being sung in the next century, whereas modern worship songs, whilst having great music and lyrics don't have that lasting quality, they are replaced with newer songs every few years. A few do stand the test of time and become classics but I don't think they would ever be as timeless as some of the well loved classic hymns.

cravingthelook · 10/11/2020 21:03

@autumnboys 😁😁😁😁😁 at Waymaker ... that and Raise a Hallelujah are just fantastic for a congregation that get into them

How Great thou art, Great are you Lord and It is Well (though a modern version of the latter)

Oh and Reckless Love, Fierce and Hosanna

It seems I have many favourites 😂😂

WildRosie · 10/11/2020 21:03

Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace sounds familiar. I think we had it at my uncle's funeral a couple of years ago, along with Immortal Invincible/Invisible- whichever it is.

On further thinking, I suppose Oh! Happy Day by the Edwin Hawkins Singers (top ten UK hit in 1969) would be categorised as a worship song, but not a hymn. Alternatively, it could be regarded as a gospel song.

The ones which make me laugh are those which go a lot higher than anyone remembers. Seem to remember on at my dads funeral was one. Beautiful mid range start and then we were all struggling a bit (contralto here).

NannyR · 10/11/2020 21:08

Raise a hallelujah is a great song, the first time I heard it was at New Wine last year and singing it in the main arena with thousands of people was an amazing experience.

Cantata · 10/11/2020 21:10

How Shall I Sing that Majesty.

Thou art a sea without a shore,
A sun without a sphere

I am a singer, and struggle to get through that bit.

All the hymns I like tend to be traditional, not the modern/Evangelist ones.

Mollscroll · 10/11/2020 21:11

LOVE Oh Happy Day - played it last week on Trump out day actually Grin. Aso on the not hymns front I love

Whenever God Shines His Light On Me by Van Morrison and Cliff Richard

And Heaven Is Ten Zillion Light Years Away by Stevie Wonder.

I’m not a believer but I love this music.

Cantata · 10/11/2020 21:11

Immortal, invisible, God only wise
In light inaccessible, hid from our eyes, OP.

MimsyBorogroves · 10/11/2020 21:11

ParkheadParadise · 10/11/2020 21:15

I watch the Sunrise

I watch the sunrise
Walk with me oh my Lord
Eternal father strong to save
I sing a song of the saints of God
For all the saints
Be still for the presence of the lord

Mulberry2627 · 10/11/2020 21:24

Be still for the presence of the Lord
Here I am Lord
Here I am to worship

I love so many!
Add in Love Shone Down at Christmas time, hair raising, tear jerker when sang by your school in church!
