Do you have a favourite hymn or hymns ?

I'm not remotely religious so asking this question probably makes me a hypocrite but anyway. Most of us were exposed to the rite-of-passage primary school dirges such as When A Knight Won His Spurs (I'm not sure that's even a hymn) and The Golden Cockerel but I'd be surprised if the likes of these featured in a Christian Church service. But, to answer my own question, I think Abide With Me is my favourite, followed closely by Morning Has Broken. I concede these might be popular choices but I don't know that many hymns to begin with Halo.

I love hillsong, but also really enjoy hymns, I have loads of favourites:

The summons (if i but call your name)
The spirit lives to set us free
I watch the sunrise
Christ triumphant
Broken for you
Make me a channel of your peace
Cornerstone
How great thou art

Hillsong

Angels/ where feet may fail
One thing remains
Here I am to worship
Whom shall I fear

Dannii2531 · 10/11/2020 21:31

I love singing hymns and have alot to choose from. Like @NannyR my church has a mixture of old hymns and new worship music by Christian artists such as Rend Collective, Matt Redman, Chris Tomlin and Skillet.

Old hymns include:
Come thou fount of every blessing
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Beauty for brokeness
Brother, Sister let me serve you
Teach me to dance
I will build my church
Be bold, be strong

Christian music includes:
10,000 reasons
Resurrection power
Holy roar
Whom shall I fear
Build your kingdom here
Lions

Jerusalem
Make Me A Channel of Your Peace
Be Thou My Vision
Abide with Me

Pretty much all the Christmas carols🥰

10000 reasons is probably my favourite song, also love Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes singing Holy Spirit.

Jerusalem... Our village Rector was of the opinion that it was a poem and not a hymn... When my sister got married he shipped her and husband off to the vestry to sign the register while we sung the hymn..
He announced at the planning meeting when I got married he would be doing the same... I soon disabused him of that idea!! 🤣 🤣 🤣
To Be A Pilgrim (SAS hymn and late DH was in the SAS)
Hills Of The North Rejoice.
Be Still For The Presence Of The Lord.
All Creatures Great And Small... (has to be the correct tune!)

Miriel · 10/11/2020 21:38

In primary school:
Here I Am Lord
As I Kneel Before You (mostly for the Latin!)
Shine Jesus Shine
Go Tell Everyone

I'm not religious now but I'm fond of these:
Abide With Me
Canticle of the Turning
Mighty To Save

midsomermurderess · 10/11/2020 21:39

Abide With Me.

Cantata · 10/11/2020 21:39

@WildRosie

Nice to think about hymns instead of Covid!

Elderflower14 · 10/11/2020 21:40

Oh and Shine Jesus Shine.
When I got married it wasn't well known.
Had it at ds2 blessing at our village church... (Had him.christened by the same wedding Rector at the church we were married at and where ds1 is buried)

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/11/2020 21:40

Be Still for the Presence of The Lord.

It makes me feel full of calm.

Blueberries0112 · 10/11/2020 21:41

The old rugged cross, in the garden , amazing grace, just as I am , I'll fly away

Alan Jackson hymns has most of my favorites

autumnboys · 10/11/2020 21:41

@NannyR - I was quite possibly in the main arena at the same time as you then unless a) you were week A or b) I was clocking up my daily million steps between Red 4 and the kids work. Smile

The one that had the line, “I was cold I was naked” always raised a snigger at primary school.

Is that the one that goes, 'I was cold I was naked were you there, were you there, when I needed a neighbour were you there?
And the creed and the colour and the name don't matter, were you there?'

If so I loved it at school!

OublietteBravo · 10/11/2020 21:43

As a child my favourite hymn was Go the mass is ended because it meant that the service was over Grin

I’m glad someone else likes My song is love unknown @Mollscroll. Definitely one of my favourites. I also like Hail queen of heaven, the ocean star

ghislaine · 10/11/2020 21:43

Now thank we all our God
Praise my soul, the King of Heaven

Not really a hymn but I also love The Lord bless you and keep you (Rutter arrangement)

Hippychickster · 10/11/2020 21:43

Whoops, bold fail!

Cantata · 10/11/2020 21:45

O Thou Who Camest From Above.

Lo! He Comes With Clouds Descending

The Wesleys were good at hymns.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 10/11/2020 21:45

Staunch atheist here but....
Shine Jesus shine
Make me a channel of your peace
We plough the fields
Lord of all hopefulness

Jfw82 · 10/11/2020 21:46

Have so many tunes in my head now!

Some I love:
I vow to thee my country
For those in peril on the sea
Guide me o thou great redeemer
Give me joy in my heart

RedRec · 10/11/2020 21:47

And Can It Be.
Abide With Me
The Servant King
Great is Thy Faithfulness
How Great Thou Art
O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

hiredandsqueak · 10/11/2020 21:47

My favourite has to be How great thou art. I also like Abide with me and The old rugged cross.

Cantata · 10/11/2020 21:47

Agree with Rutter/Lord Bless You and Keep You, @ghislaine
Not a hymn, but wonderful all the same.

SapatSea · 10/11/2020 21:47

I bind unto myself today (St. Patrick's breastplate).

At primary school we would have a play about St Patrick's life then I would sing the hymn as part of choir, then we got to go home early and had the next day off - hooray!

Fabvegetablegrower · 10/11/2020 21:48

Oh Jesus I have promised is my favourite.
