Don't the minor children of all former American presidents get official police protection? I don't see how she would have needed Onassis to protect her children.

I agree with @IcedPurple’s take that theirs was a transactional relationship from the start, but she probably didn’t anticipate his run for the WH nor want the accompanying attention.

I do feel sorry for her regarding the past four years though. Being married to someone whose demeanor is SO undignified and unpresidential must be humiliating. Even if you knew what they were like, seeing that behavior on the world stage must be awful for her and especially their son.

I think the older children are so indoctrinated they they can’t see the reality, or don’t want to.

It was 1968, so who knows? That being said, JFK and Bobby had Secret Service and they were both murdered. As a mother, I can understand if she went overboard in her efforts to protect them.

I find it very hard to believe she could have anything like that much money in her own right. She was never a very succesful model. We're not talking Linda Evangelista here.

Jackie married Onassis because it suited them both at the time, it was absolutely a marriage of convenience. He gained kudos by marrying the widow of the president of the United States. She was regarded as the epitome of class and style, the Princess Diana if her day. A beautiful stylish woman. He was the richest man in the world and could offer her protection and freedom. He bought her a Greek island, which I have been lucky enough to see, although not permitted to step foot on. By marrying him she acquired freedom and security for herself and children.
Plenty of people would marry for the same reasons if given the choice.
The same with Melania.

Let's face it, many men and women like money and that is all they really care about.
I'm sure Melania would not have looked at Donald Trump twice if he had been an ordinary person without any money or kudos.

DT's previous wives were enormous ego-maniacs -- famously so in the New York tabloid press. DT and all his adult kids are enormously self-important people. I just don't believe that Melania could be any different from the family norm. She won't have as much notoriety not being by his side, and she must like the notoriety, so I reckon Melania will stay with Orange one. I mean, he has to die fairly soon, anyway. She'll have 25 years to live without him later.

I am still predicting Baron will run for POTUS in the 2040s, as a mini-version of his dad.

That's what I heard too. That she lived largely separately from The Donald, didn't really participate in the New York social scene, and spent most of her time with her parents and son, with whom she communicates in her native Slovenian. Supposedly she's devoted to her son, even though in public she always seems quite cold to him.

I find it curious how much emphasis people place on the wife of the Bad Man, as opposed to his grown sons. They each have the exact same financial pressures, inheritance vs divorce settlement - and yet she has the additional (terrifying) pressure of knowing the Great Narcissist could contest custody of her own child.

Where's the opprobrium for the sons - one of whom urged his father to "fight to the death" only 2 days ago?
