Marvellous. The new window cleaner is... odd.

He cleaned my windows for the first time today after doing my neighbour's and knocking on the off-chance. The Spidey senses started tingling a bit when I politely pointed out to him that he'd left his stepladder up in the middle of the road and cars were having to stop and wait to go past it. He'd done it on purpose apparently - something about ladders on top of his van?

Then he started texting me this evening. It started off normally and then got a bit strange. He wanted to message me pretending it was time for him to come back again, 'to build his confidence'. I thought he had a new automated reminder message system he wanted to use but no, it was just him sending a text. Then he wanted to try it again.

This guy has my address and my phone number and it's only me and the kids at home. I'm a bit freaked out. Any ideas?

And the next ones.

I would stop replying then in a few weeks time text again to say you don’t need window cleaning services any more, and block him.

He does seem strange, doesn't seem like anything to be too worried about but if you're uncomfortable then ask him not to come back again

I don’t like this one bit. I’m guessing you didn’t respond again? Why on earth did he want to send a practice message when clearly the messages were getting through? Very curious.

I haven't replied and he hasn't sent me anything else. DH is on his way home from.work and I'll feel better when he gets here.

The window cleaner might not be NT. If that's the case then I hope he talks about this little exchange with someone who can gently explain that this is inappropriate.

What impression did you get when he was there? Did you get any impression that he might have mild LD? He could be creepy or he could be like one of my clients who has mild LD so tends to come across as ‘odd’, until you realise. You could ask a male friend to visit while the cleaner is there and see how it goes.

We're on a main road into the town centre and it was blocking the usual school traffic.

I think it's very awkward more than sinister, but I really couldn't be arsed with teaching my window cleaner how to communicate effectively. It might be difficult to get rid though; he seems desperate for the work.

I would say this. I work with someone who is autistic and this is the type of email or text he would send. Your replies are good, just ignore any further messages or reiterate with "no need to contact me again until December".

Block his number after telling him on second thoughts you have decided not to bother with the windows

I’m so sorry for any men with LD who have to navigate the world and try to live independently, reading some of these replies.

I'm also intrigued about your window cleaner needing your phone number though. Ours just shows up whenever he fancies, washes the windows then knocks on for money. Comes back later for money if we are out. I don't even know his name!

He didn't seem like the sharpest stick in the woods but was perfectly pleasant and did a good job. I feel a bit sorry for him now. Christmas box of chocolate biscuits for him when he comes back in December!
