yep, I second heath ledger would be considered 2nd rate had he not died young.

I know he's an international megastar and world treasure, but I don't actually think that Elton John's voice is all that great (even more so now he's older). Probably 95% of his songs (well, Bernie Taupin's songs) are really quite mediocre and often nonsensical. He is a good piano player, I accept.

Also, to echo those who've already mentioned John Lennon, it's terrible the way in which his life was taken from him at such a young age, but the ridiculous heights of his fame and adulation were never justified by his level of talent. Like with Elton, I'm not saying he wasn't talented: just that far more talented artists have never received 1% of the recognition and hysteria that he did/still does.

"Imagine no possessions" indeed, when you own a £1m Rolls Royce. Nothing at all wrong with enjoying your riches and spending them on whatever you want, but don't then go all worthy and start preaching to us ordinary folk about how beautiful communism is.

....how about imagining just how lovely the world would be if men didn't ever beat their wives or emotionally abuse their children, for a start....

I saw a documentary about John Lennon the other evening. He did seem very entitled, but perhaps that’s no surprise when you live in a world where everyone fawns over you. And it struck me that “Starting Over” sounds like a slow Shakin’ Stevens song!

It was very annoying that he turned up in the US and he and Yoko Ono, neither of whom were US citizens, started pontificating about politics and then had the gall to be annoyed their visas were in peril.

We can'tnt watch anything, however good, on ITV because adverts make DP and to some extent, me, absolutely have the rage! He has ADHD and if he loses concentration he just can't carry on watching something. Not strictly related to the thread I know but if affects what we watch majorly

The One Show sets my teeth on edge

Slightly off-mainstream, this one, but he pops up now and again on telly: Daniel O'Donnell. The songs he tends to sing are fine, if that's your cup of tea; but he has a very average voice indeed - in tune, but so bland and utterly emotionless. However, he always just seems so very, very bored, whenever he sings or talks. I know it must get tedious singing the same old cheesy songs, but it's showbiz - surely he could pretend to be a little bit happy to be there? He's made himself an absolute boatload of cash from it and can have absolutely anything materially that he wants - it's not like he has to pack biscuits for NMW and then endure enforced jollity on cringey workplace teambuilding events!

Also: Boys from the Black Stuff was a good one-off play and should have stayed that way. No TV series.

Ken Loach/Elton John/Orson Welles all started out brilliantly. Their first work (Cathy Come Home/Elton John album/Citizen Kane were the best thing they ever did. All down hill from then on.

No Bill Forsyth film is worth a second viewing.

Friends is tedious. All of them irritating.
